Drip. Drip. Drip.
The only thing that distracted my attention from the eerie and frightening darkness was the sound of trickling water in the nearby distance. This was perhaps the key to my sanity, which was on the verge of abandoning me altogether. But I had to continue through this passage. He was here, somewhere, for how else would I have gotten stuck in such an awful place? And if he knew I had regained my conscious, he’d surely find me, and goodness knows what he’d do. I shook the horrid thoughts away.
I know what he did. And he knows I know. And that could be part of the reason I’m here now, lost and helpless, doomed to wander alone until I find the light, the exit, freedom. But that’s just wishful thinking, for its more likely that he’ll find me before I navigate through these pathways, which seem to be growing narrower. My claustrophobia is setting in, and I’m finding it harder and harder to breathe.
Freeze! I commanded myself. The echo of footsteps stole away the vast majority of my hope. He knew I’d awoken, and was coming to find me, I was sure of it. If I returned to him, maybe, just maybe, he would spare me. After all, I didn’t know him by name, nor had I seen his entire face. So that left little reason for him to… Get rid of me. Right?
But he was a little wrong in the head. He proved that when he pulled a knife on that innocent man. I won’t go into detail, but that incident left me paralyzed in the spot that I stood in. When he gave me that stone- cold glare, hidden partially by the shadow of his wide- brimmed hat, I knew it was over right then and there.
His actions surprised me, as he decided to prolong my life, stashing his weapon away. ‘Swallow this.’ He ordered, handing me a tiny blue pill. I wasn’t about to disobey, taking the drug without even requesting a drink of water. My sensitive body grew weak soon after, and I dozed into a relaxed slumber.
And then I woke up here.
The footsteps, I could hear them approaching, closing in on me. It was over. A stream of tears cascaded down my cheeks, my eyes overflowing with sorrow.
But wait! Up ahead, a light! It was far off, but if I sprinted fast enough, I might be able to make it.
My feet scrambled to gain momentum, the bumpy and uneven dirt beneath me not making things easy. The footsteps behind me had increased in volume, and the source of them was no longer walking, but full on running. He was seconds away.
I struggled to kick it into gear. The light was but a few feet away, inviting me into its warmth, reaching into the darkness to embrace me.
And then, it happened. “Ack!” A stray stone caught my foot, and I barreled forward, face first into the soil. The footsteps slowed down, as if no longer in a hurry.
“’Fraid you’re not goin’ anywhere.” His southern accent rang through my ears as possibly the worst sound I’d ever heard. He dug the heel of his boot into my lower back, preventing any attempt of escape.
