Life of a Bird
Rhythmic pecking breaks the silence,
The edge of new life,
Breaks free of the barrier.
Shell that divides new life from the world,
Shatters and life begins.
Tended to with utmost care,
Lovingly given food,
All by the one who brought it to the world.
Mother and father,
Doing their job,
Raising offspring,
Making life.
First step out,
Eyes adjust to new surroundings.
New sounds,
New sights,
Expansion of their tiny world.
Go!
A tiny push,
Brings the reluctant baby over the edge.
Down,
down,
down,
Alas!
Wings go outwards,
Air rushes by,
Clean, beautiful feathers,
Untouched by dirt.
Flying.
Out of the nest,
Free of the ground,
Up in the air.
Growing up,
Finding food,
Survival.
Time p@sses,
Brushes its magic,
Across everything and anything.
Everything ages,
Everything changes.
More feathers,
Still a lovely white,
A plumper body,
Requiring more food.
Migration p@sses,
The tiring journey-
Flying south is now over.
It is time.
Flitting about,
Eating what has to be eaten.
And finally...
The meeting.
Another, just like her,
Looking for what she is looking for.
Seeing what she is seeing.
A mate.
Time once more works its ways,
Creating life,
And doing great things.
Settling upon a fine nest,
Accompanied by her mate.
To take the place of her own parents,
And create life.
Sitting beneath her downy feathers,
The beginnings.
The beginnings of a new life.
Pearly eggs,
That will in turn,
Follow what she had done.
The life of a bird.
