Chapter 1
Don’t
all stories start with once upon time? Well, not this one this one is
different.
“Paige!
Paige!” whispered Corbin. My friend leaned over to my desk looking down into my
note book to see what I was doing but I flicked him on the nose and he sat back
into his space again.
“What,
I’m writing!” I whispered back as a wrinkled hand snatched my note book. “Sorry
Mrs. Snail” I mumbled angrily as I look up to see an old lady with a pale
wrinkled face. She is clothed in a peach colored blouse and a leopard print
skirt. I try not to vomit on her shirt or burst out laughing because of her
skirt.
“You’ll get it back after class,” she said in
a ragged raspy voice as she walked away with my note book the sound of her
black heels tapping against linoleum.
But I don’t need to distract
myself from your voice after class. I
thought as she put my notebook in a drawer of her desk and sat down in her creaky
swivel chair.
“Paige!”
Corbin tapped me on the shoulder, “Your Fangs!”
Corbin panicked quietly. When I shift it’s not like a puff of smoke and in my
place is a giant wolf, it’s more like a slow process depending on whether or
not I’m deciding to shift or if I’m resisting. My teeth where my fangs would be
as a wolf basically start to elongate and become pointed, my tail just kind of forms
(I haven’t exactly watched that happen), my claws work just the same as my
fangs, my arms and legs shrink and elongate where need be and turn into that of
a wolfs and then I sprout fur all over my body and when the shifting is
complete I’m just a really big tan ish wolf.
“Can
I go get a bucket of water because you’re growing ears as well?” Getting more
panicked, Corbin gets a plastic water bottle out of his back pack and squirts
it in my face which did nothing to stop my shifting. That trick used to work
for some odd reason but since Corbin gets so panicked when I shift at school that
I’ve become immune.
I
face his way my eyes closed and my teeth clenched together, “Yes and that did a
whole lot. I thought you were supposed to be the smart one.”
“Corbin,
what are you doing to poor Paige!?” Mrs. Snail screamed as she took out a towel
from who knows where and ran through the row of desks to the back row where I
was seated. She’s surprisingly fast for a rouge ancient Egyptian mummy, “Are
you ok sweetie?” she said handing me the towel. I nodded my head placing the
towel quickly over my ears and pressing them flat against my head as I dried my
face.
“Aaaaaa!
She’s real evil all right,” Corbin whispered sarcastically.
I
wipe my face dry and hand Mrs. Snail her towel back after my ears are gone, “Shut
up bone head!” I snarled as the bell rang. Corbin shot up out of his seat
gathered is things off his desk cramming them into his back pack and dragged me
out the door.
“Well…
time flies, doesn’t it, Paige?” Corbin said nervously. I could barely hear what
he said over the screaming and slamming of lockers outside the heavy metal door
he had opened in order to make his quick escape. He knew he wasn’t off the hook
for squirting me in the face with water.
“Not
so fast, Mr. Chadwick. You have detention.” Mrs. Snail said slow and stern. Out
of nowhere Mrs. Snail slammed the door in my face.
“Well
looks like someone forgot to take her happy pill this morning.” I said as I
walked out to the front of the school to meet my mom in her sky blue minivan. She
was waving franticly from the car trying to get my attention. I rolled my eyes
and walked over getting into the back seat. She still wont let me ride shot
gun.
“Paige,
I remodeled your room so it looks the way girls
rooms are supposed to look,” my mom said, looking away from the road for a
split second in order to see my face.
“Oh
no,” I whispered to myself as my mom keeps driving, “This can’t be good.” My
mom and I have two complete different ideas of how I should dress and act. I
prefer the more comfortable laid back look while my mom thinks that I should be
wearing frilly pink dresses my hair back in a neat pony tail or perfect ringlets
falling down my back my face caked in makeup.
After
what seemed like eternity but was truly only five minutes we arrived at our
house. I rushed out of the car, into the house and up the stairs to my bedroom.
“What have you done to my room? Where are my weapons you know my swords, spears
and my scythe? But most importantly, where are my books?” I screamed, holding
my head in disbelief.
“You
spend too much time reading and practicing with those….things. So I sold them
to some guy on...Oh what that online shpping mall thing? Oh right Ebay. I
figured he had more use for them than you did. I suppose I could have given
them to Corbin. Maybe it would help him get a girlfriend? I mean it’s about he
had one. You too. Maybe I should set you up on match.com!,” she said running
out of my room and down the hall to where the computer was.
“Why
is my room pink? Out of all the colors in the world, you had to choose pink?
It’s simple now, I’m going to die,” I said, calmly trying to hold back the
anger.
I
walked down the stairs trying to get away from all the preppy pink and creepiness
of my room. I walked into the living room and jumped over the couch. “Hi Bear,
did mom take you to the Pet Spa again?” I said softly, lying down on the couch
and taking the putrid pink bow off the German shepherd and St.Bernared’s head.
“Looks like I’m sleeping with you tonight big guy,” I said tiredly, putting on
Bears’ spiked color and turning it around so the cold brass buckle was on the
back of his neck.
“Ok,
but I but I sleep closest to the fire place.” Bear said.
[Oh,
I forgot to mention- I can talk to animals.]
“Alight.”
I say ruffling the dogs’ fur and burying my nose in it. He smelled of floral
shampoo and his fur felt silky. I knew that would all change once he had a
chance to get outside tomorrow. He would roll around in dirt and mud if he
could find it. Harass a skunk which would end with him in a bath of tomato
soup.
I
let Bear go and he took walked over in front of the old brick fire place. It
wasn’t lit tonight though it would be in about a month or so but he claimed
that that spot was the softest in the house.
I
lay down on the couch pulling the teddy bear quilt off the back of the couch
and pulling it over my body. I brought it to my chin bringing my knees up to my
chest as I curled into a ball to fall asleep.
That
night I didn’t dream. I never usually dream though so it wasn’t all that strange
to just be asleep. Or at least it didn’t really seem like a dream so much. I
just heard noises. Random noises in my head like the clicking of Mrs. Snails’
heels on the linoleum, cars honking, a wolf howling, the beat of a song you
might hear in a night club. I couldn’t think of something it might be connected
to. I hadn’t ever been to a club besides this boring chess club Corbin signed
me up for once. The wolf howling? Well maybe it was me. Mrs. Snails’ shoes on
the cold floor. I didn’t see how that would connect with me howling. And the
cars honking. I have no clue.
I
rolled over in my sleep and the only way I could tell was because the side of
me that was getting awfully hot suddenly got chilly.
The
next day was terrible. “MOM! What did you do to all my clothes? They’re all PINK!!”
I screamed running down the stairs and into the kitchen where my mom was.
“Oh,
while you were at Corbin’s house the other day I went to the mall with your
friend Amy,” she said, making breakfast and not bothering to look up.
“Whoa!
You mean- cheat off- my-papers- yet- I- get- in-trouble Amy?” I try to calm my
voice but that doesn’t do much to cover my anger.
See,
Amy and I have never liked each other, but when she got me in trouble when she
cheated off my science test that was the last straw. “Now excuse me while I go
borrow some real clothes from a real friend!” I yelled, not
bothering to act rational any more as I slam the door behind me after I made
sure that Bear was outside.
Sometimes
I wonder if my mom was replaced with some alien that watched those old T.V.
shows of a perfect family like the Brady Bunch to learn to be a parent. My mom
wasn’t always like this. She used to be really cool and chill about everything
but that person left a long time ago when my Dad left. There was always tension
there whenever they were in the same room together but being a little kid I
thought that was normal for a family. One day he just left. No note, no
good-bye just one day he was here and the next all his stuff went out the door
with him.
I listened to the quiet morning and looked for
other people. “No signs of people, good,”
I said to myself. I begin to morph into a ginger colored wolf no bigger than
any other wolf in the wild. I look at my hands as they turn into paws with
shining golden fur. My hair begins to become short as my body starts to resemble
that of a wolf. My mouth and nose start to elongate into a muzzle with the same
golden red fur. I sprinted across the street and over Corbin’s back gate. I
eased myself up Corbin’s balcony and opened the door. I jumped onto his bed and
licked his face.
“Oww.
Yeah, that used to be fun when you were smaller, but now it just hurts.” He
groaned as he sat up and rubbed his eyes. I licked his face again. “Ok, yeah,
hi to you too. Now will you stop that?” Corbin complained as he wiped my drool
off his face. I turned back into a human again and sat cross-legged on Corbin’s
bed, looking at him.
It’s
a myth that when you morph back into a human you have to no clothes on. Our
clothes just simply become a part of us. It’s a bit uncomfortable at first but
you get used to it.
“So,
I need to borrow some clothes. My mom got rid of all mine,” I said
angrily as I remembered just only five minutes ago.
“Yeah,
sure.” He got up and walked to the closet, opened the door, and yawned. “Here
you go.” He lay back down and covered his face. “You know where the bathroom
is. Come back when you are ready,” I heard him say in a muffled voice.
I
held up some of my clothes I brought here, just in case this happened again. I
walked down the hall to the bathroom and changed into the clothes I found in Corbin’s
closet. I walked back to the room after I was finished.
He
was dressed as well and was on the computer. “I found a couple of places with
everything you wanted: it’s in the country: there is archery: and it’s far away
from here but still in the U.S.” He handed me a sticky note with three names of
boarding school on it. I sat down cross-legged on his bed and I put the note in
my pocket. “One thing, though, all of them are boys only. There’s no way you
can get in.”He says turning his chair around to face me.
“Watch and learn my naive little
friend.” I said going over to his mini fridge, stealing a soda and a frozen
steak, “And how are you going to do that” was Corbin’s reply as he got himself
a soda.
I go over to the balcony, through the
steak to Bear and walk back to the bed. I sit down, pop the top of the soda and
take a sip. “Well first we send a form saying i’m a guy to each school and whichever
one believes it is the one I go to,” was my clever but simple response as I
take another sip of soda.
“But what if, oh never mind let’s just
fill out the forms.”Corbin said reluctantly as he turns his chair to face the
computer and goes to the first school website.
It
took us forever to finish filling out the forms. You know finding an easy name
to remember, make a fake birth certificate, and…well….actually that’s it…but
anyway.
Corbin sat back in his chair as I plopped
down on his bed my legs hanging off the end. “How long did that take, an hour?”
I asked running my fingers through my stringy red hair.
Corbin
looks at his watch, “That took about fifteen minutes.” He set his arm down on
the chair.
[Well I was wrong, so what I’m a teen
we tend to be wrong….a lot.]
I sat up and reached for a sticky note
and a pen. I wrote down the name Jack.
I stuck the note in my pocket. I stood
up and walked to the balcony, “I’m going to go look and see if my mom didn’t
find some of my stuff.” I turned wolf and hoped down to the ground. “Come on
Bear. We’re going to see if mom didn’t get rid of some stuff.” I walk over to
the gate and jumped over; I crossed the street and stood on the steps in front
of my house. I turned back in to a human and opened the door. I rushed through
the living room so my mom couldn’t talk to me. I walked up the stairs and into
my room.
I bent down at the foot of my bed where I had
a wooden trunk (now pink) screwed to the floor of my room. “Yes! She’s still
scared of power tools!” I said in somewhat of a whisper. I took a little silver
chain from around my neck with a small rusty old fashion key. I put the key in
the keyhole of the trunk and heard a click. I took the key out of the hole and
put the chain back around my neck as I watched the lid of the trunk flip open
just barely. I opened the lid all the way.
I smiled as I looked inside the trunk at an
egg sized circular mirror with tiny vine like details, a silver pocket watch whose
details matched the mirrors, a fist sized dark purple jagged rock, and beneath
it all an unopened letter with a red wax seal. I stood up and walked over to my
closet, opened the door and took out a small leather bag. I walked back over to
the trunk and put the items in the bag carefully. I slung the bag over my
shoulder and went over to my window.
I opened the window and dropped the bag out
the window into a bush. I sat on the window sill and swung my legs over the
edge and jumped down landing just beside the leather bag. I picked it up and
slung it over my shoulder and walked out of the bushes onto the sidewalk. I ran
across the street and climbed over Corbin’s back gate. “This is much easier as
a wolf.” I hulled myself over the gate and walked to the middle of his back
yard. “Corbin. Heads up.” I yelled as I through the bag up and over his
balcony. I heard a thud and then saw Corbin come to the edge of his balcony
with the bag in one hand and the other hand was rubbing his head.
“What
did you put in hear, rock’s?” he said as he put the bag down and dropped a rope
ladder. “I swear, one day this is going to break.” Corbin complained as I climbed the wobbly
ladder.
“Are you calling me fat!?” I tried to sound
like I was actually offended.
“No...that’s not what I ment it’s just…I
didn’t mean it...um...uh” he sounded panicked.
“Dude
I’m kidding I know what you mean” I said laughing a bit. I got to the top and
hoped over the railing. I sit down on Corbin’s' bed, “you can look inside if
you want”.
Corbin
sits down in his chair and opens the bag,” I will I wan’t to see what you hit
me in the head with!” he looks inside and takes out the stuff inside. “AHA! You
did hit me with a rock!” He points at her the rock in his hand.
“Yeah
I did, you got a problem with that?” I said in a careless voice
“Yeah
I do!”
“Well
then fix it” I snapped back quickly and cleverly as if I knew what he was going
to say.
[Well
actually I did I mean come on I’ve known him for nine years.]
He
looked at me trying to think of something to do about it. His mouth lay open as
if he were going to say something and he was still pointing at me with the rock
in his hand. I smirked at him “that’s what I thought. Now give me that.” I took
the rock out of his hand and closed his mouth for him. I put the stuff back in my
pack and closed it.
I
sat down on his bed again and put my bag next to me. I bumped up and down on
the bed still sitting. “Ha, this is fun!” I stand up and begin to jump up and
down. Suddenly the bed collapsed. I stopped jumping. Corbin stared at me. He
looked scared, mad, and panicked. I could hear the faint sound of footsteps
coming up the stairs. I get up and run into Corbin’s closet I quickly close the
closet door right as a short blonde haired woman warring a white apron
splattered with…with who knows what.
“Corbin!
What are you doing up here?” she looks at Corbin
“It...I...um…it
was the next door neighbors again. They hoped the fence and set off a nether rocket.”
He bit his lip not sure if the lie would work
The
lady put her hand to her chin and thought. “I’ll have to talk to their
parents.”
“Yes
Mom” he stopped biting his lip
Corbin’s
mom was a middle aged woman with straight shoulder length dirty blond hair which
I don’t get because Corbin’s hair is curly and red-ish brown…whatever. She wears
ugly sweaters and mom jeans with black high heels.
[I
don’t get how people can ware those things?!Trust me it’s hard I tried it once
and…well let’s just say it wasn’t pretty and that was the last time I ever
tried heels.]
She
walks out of his room and shuts the door. I waited till I couldn’t hear the
taping of her heels in the hall way to come out of the closet. I burst open the
door and gasp for air
“Man
your closets stuffy!”
“What
do you expect it’s a closet” he says logically
“I
hate it when you’re right”
“Then
you must hate me a lot”
“Whatever
floats your boat” I pat his shoulder then sit on his bed.
“So
anyone reply yet” I say impatiently
“1.
No, 2. It’s been 10 minutes since I e-mailed it!”
“Dude
you know I’m incapable of being patent so deal with it!”
Corbin
nodded; “true” he sits back in his chair again. “So what to do now?”
“Why
are you asking me?”
“Right.”
He said and tilted his head back looking up at the white ceiling above. A few
moments later he sits up snaps his finger and points at me excitement twinkling
in his eyes. He opens his house as if he was about to say something but closes
his mouth and his eyes go dull, “Never mind.” He drops his hand back into his
lap.
“Oh
come on I’d be good with anything right now.” I say wanting to know what he was
thinking of.
“Well
you know about the annual fundraiser they do down at the middle school…”Corbin
trailed off looking at me tentatively as if he were expecting me to hit him.
Which knowing me is a good thing to be scared off but right now I was bored and
needed something to do. I stood up grabbing one of Corbin’s’ hands and pulling
him over to the balcony before I remembered that he couldn’t very well jump
from this height and come out un-scaved. I let go of his hand and he walked
back into his room and out his bed room door. I put one hand on the rail and
hoisted myself over landing on the grass below one hand touching the ground the
other behind me and my knees bent nearly touching the ground. I look behind me
to see if Mrs. Chadwick has seen me but the blinds to sliding glass patio door
were closed so I dusted my hands off.
“Whoa!”
I heard a deep voice say from the side of me. I turned to my left to see one of
Corbin’s next door neighbors peering over the tall wooden fence. His face was
round and pudgy along with his sausage links he calls fingers. His green eyes went
wide as he saw me look at him and he ducked back behind the fence but I could
still the ends of his chewed up nails over the fence. I walked up to the fence
and stood on my tip toes to look over at the red haired boy looking up at me in
horror. From the looks of it he was around 14 years old so no wonder he was
peeking over the fence into Corbin’s yard. He had probably seen me come over
day after day and 14 year old boys and their raging hormones(not to say girls
don’t have that too) they would be glad to see any girl that close to them.
I
offered him a sweet smile before asking, “So uh…”
“Mickey.”
The boy said his voice cracking at the end.
“Right.
So Mickey what exactly did you see?” I asked tilting my head to one side a bit
giving him a sweet yet intimidating smile.
“Uh…n-nothing…lady.”
He squeaked out his voice cracking once more.
