Forward: This is my first attempt a short series...it will be all one story, but there will be time in between while I write more. The story will focus on a group of Dragons, known as the "Crescent Dragons", which have a shape on their foreheads that resembles a crescent moon. They could be called a family...as roughly as any other group of dragons could be called that. Stay tuned for updates, and I hope you enjoy!

~First Chapter: 3/23/09~

A lonely figure stares at itself in a large, motionless pond. The figure barely shifts, almost p*censored*ing for a statue. The only noticeable motion, if you were to get close enough to notice of course, was the slow, methodical rising and falling of the creature's chest.

The night was a dark one, the moon barely showing itself past the range of clouds in the starless sky. No creature dare make itself known in the presence of this mythical being. Even the insects, with their small minds, seemed to stay quiet this night. Everyone feared and respected the Dragons.

The creature, who will come to call Destin, can not be called anything but average by dragon terms. By human terms of course, that was different. He towered over most human buildings (none being more than two stories, at best) and had a wing span of 115 feet, tip to tip. He was an earthy color of brown with amber eyes that seemed to never bl
ink.

As Destin looked at himself, he tilted his head to the side a bit, glaring at that crescent shaped mark on his forehead...that ever present reminder of his heritage...the ever present curse on his family and kin. He growled lowly at himself, seeming to seep with resentment. He hated that mark, and everything it represented.

Time went on slowly...or so it seemed to Destin. Dragons have an odd sense of time, as they live for hundreds of years or more. In reality, it had been 4 hours that he sat near the pond, scaring all the animals into hiding. Then, dawn began to break and the bravest of birds began their morning ritual of song. Destin snorted in annoyance, looking around for the culprit, but could spot nothing. He sighed and looked to the sky. Opening his wings, he stretched them as wide as they would go, letting off an accidental roar in the process. He braced himself and prepared to take off...

The Crescent Series, Chapter 2 ~ 3/24/09

A few miles away, another winged, glorious creature stands on a rocky outcropping near her den. She scans the horizon, and everything around it. The trees sway in the wind and birds circle at a respectable distance above the dragon. Her scales are a shiny, lustrous gold with smaller gold flecks accenting her long, lean muscles.

That day was particularly clear in the morning sun, and the gold in her scales reflected the sunlight marvelously, making looking at her nearly blinding. She was large, even by dragon standards! Shuurei towered over human settlements and other dragons. There were few who matched her size, and none in her family who could do so. She was 85 feet in length, with a wingspan of 170 feet, tip to tip.

Suddenly, Shuurei spotted something. She narrowed her eyes at the quickly rising figure in the distance. She prepared to take off, to defend her home and her family, when she noticed something. She calmed down when she realized it was only Destin. She snorted and thought to herself of what a meager, average dragon he was, but he was family.

She growled in anger as her stomach grumbled, she had not eaten in a few days. The animals in the area were beginning to get wise to her hunting times and methods, and as quick and agile as she was, she was also very large and unavoidable. She made up her mind and, looking at Destin still rising to the clouds in the distance, she opening her own wings. The sigh was glorious and awe-inspiring. Never had anyone seen a larger, more graceful dragon than Shuurei.

She took off, the cool morning air stinging her onyx eyes a bit. She flapped her m*censored*ive wings a few times and she was already hundreds of feet in the air. The warm updraft kept her rising into the clouds as she smiled to herself. This was what dragons lived for, rising high into the air and gliding along on their wings. Eyes closed and enjoying the experience, she caught her first whiff of a potential breakfast. She looked down quickly, scanning the ground as she circled high in the air and spotted them. A herd of deer, new to the area, not knowing that this was Shuurei's favorite time to hunt. She closed her eyes into slits and folder her wings back, diving towards the herd.

The Crescent Series, Chapter 3 ~ 3/25/09

A gr*censored*y field is seemingly alive, the wind blowing the long gr*censored* back and forth. Insects twitter and flit around, rabbits and other small mammals dart here and there, searching for their next meal, or trying to escape being a next meal. Suddenly, something darts past. Its small, about the size of a dog, but much quicker. The dark, sleek figure moves faster than any animal in the field as it runs along the ground. It finally stops, poking its head out above the gr*censored* line.

Balrus sniffed the air, taking in m*censored*ive amounts with his long snout. He opens his eyes and narrows them in the direction of what he has smelled. Lowering his head again, he takes off, quick as an eagle diving for its prey. The small mammal barely has a chance as Balrus descends on it, eating it quickly and painlessly. Balrus cringes as the apparent family members of the mammal cry out, he hated hearing that noise. He felt bad enough as it was, having to hunt like that, but what choice did he have?

Balrus sighed, his growling stomach somewhat calmed. His reaches his neck around to clean his scales methodically, the scales were dark as the night sky and hard as stone. Balrus was very small, by any terms. He was young, barely a year old, and only the size of a large dog. He could not yet fly, but he could run faster than anyone else around. As long as he could remember, he was on his own. He was born alone, and stayed alone.

His crimson eyes opened as he heard something. For a while now, since he had entered this area, he had been hearing sounds, like other dragons. Distant roars and great wing flaps were all he had to go on, but he was sure it was dragons. He shuddered for a moment, suddenly feeling scared and lonely. He shook his head around and went back to cleaning his scales, and biting the dirt out from under his sharp claws.
