PROLOGUE

I sit cross-legged on the cool, stone surface of the caves floor. I am surrounded by darkness and light, flames frozen in great chunks of ice, the rumble of thunder echoing through the silent refuge from the harsh world I keep in balance. A miniature version of the earth revolves slowly in front of me, the so-called ‘forces of nature’ crashing, destroying towns, cities and peoples lives. �This is not nature though; this is my own unstoppable power, my force to completely wipe any town, city or state- however big- off the map. Permanently. I watch the story of our earth being played out undisturbed, until the world begins to shudder and fade, it’s colors mixing and forming into the outline of a shape. Details become clearer, the shape thins out and I see a face, a sparkling blue eye blinks at me, it’s eyelashes a thick black. Her face is like that of a delicate porcelain doll, so beautiful and graceful. From the forehead up this picture has been cut off, leaving only one loose strand of dark hair visible, resting on her shoulder. This image disappears and flashing words take its place.� I barely have time to register these flickering names and numbers before they jolt away, leaving the image of the world in its usual position in the center of the cave. I lay my head onto the cold stone floor and close my eyes. This can only mean one thing…it’s almost time for me to die.
CHAPTER ONE
Dying, for me, is not a thing I fear or avoid at all costs. It is a thing I accept as part of the world’s balance, just as the sun rises and sets, leaving the moon to take its place. Though I am definitely not the sun, nor the moon I must still find someone to take my place. Before I die I must find my heir, a young human, who can take my place, keeping the world in balance. This human is not just anyone, plucked off the streets. No, my heir was born to serve the earth as a guardian. She has faced many challenging tasks and proven her worth, my heir was shown to me, her image somehow sent into my refuge. I must prepare for my journey to find her, she could be anywhere and this is not as some humans put it ‘a small world’ not even for me.
