I think our children are in danger of forgetting how to speak properly and write correctly.  I think Rescreatu should make it a rule that chatspeak/textalk is no longer allowed to be used in the shoutbox at the very least.

I do not want my own children corrupted my the illiteracy of this written language, and I recently caught my son imitating it in rmail.  He's smarter than that!

As a site that caters primarily to those who are young and easily influenced, I say you make an enforcable rule banning chatspeak from the shoutbox and forums. Lets get our wonderful Rescreatu world to help promote literacy!

Who agrees?

Edit:

Wow, there IS a rule for this if you look on the bottom of the rules page.  So lets make it more visible by posting it to the tagbox that pops up when you press the rules link under the shoutbox, please.

Good idea, though small amounts of chatspeak, I believe, should be ok.
I don't think I should get a warning for saying 'lol'.
Otherwise Patrick would have to warn himself.

I believe lol is more like internet slang.  Its entirely different from chatspeak as its an acronym for "laugh out loud."  Its not a substitute for a word like "u" is for "you" or "ur" for "your" or "2" for "to" or "too".  This is what concerns me, not the use of acronyms.

This makes complete sense to me.  Acronyms such as lol, rofl, and even btw are no problem to me, but "my cosen plays her do u no her 2 i thout u mite" is the kind of thing that drives me nuts.  Now, sometimes that is an exaggeration, but when those who speak fluent English in real life can not be understood in the typing...it's just terrible.  Not to mention annoying.

The only (semi) down side would be that if this were to happen, the required reading of the rules idea must be instated as well.  Too many people who don't have any intention of breaking rules and being a nuisance may be accustomed to chatspeak.  They need to read ahead of time that good use of English, or at least and obvious attempt with honest mistakes, is required.

Overall, I say this should happen.  It would make the SB more fun all the time, rather than only when a majority of the literary people are on.  Another intelligent idea, Geo!

I agree with this idea. All of the chatspeak drives me nuts and I can hardly stand it. It's pretty hard to understand it sometimes too.

My brother got infected by that dumb junk. His English is bad enough as it is!

I think forcing people to write literatly is for their own benefit. Lot's of people write in chatspeak in the forums and people don't understand what they say. Those people become upset sometimes when no one knows what they mean.

When I ask people why they speak chatspeak. They always reply with "coz its faster". Obviously on the forums, being fast is not nessecary. So I propose chatspeak should be banned on the forums, we have reasoning to back it up.

I'll have you know I learned to type without looking at the keys, and I can type much faster using normal words than the chatspeak junk.

It might be faster now, but its not very rewarding.  Did I mention that when I graded papers for the instructor I worked for, COLLEGE students used chatspeak in their work?  Yeah... that's bad.  I marked every question wrong, and the instructor backed me up.  Fortunately, there were not many of them, but if you think about it, getting used to chatspeak is a bad thing.

Its not hard to learn to type if you put your mind to it.  In fact, most keyboards even have guides on the F and J keys to tell you your fingers are in the right place.

Oh, and what did you say Tacos?  That requires translation. :P

Agree. Save the vowels. Type out your words. Numbers are numbers. For does not equal 4.

I agree. I type very fast and I don't use chatspeak at all. It wouldn't kill you to take one or two more seconds to type out the full word.

I actually would love to see a rule in the SB saying "Try to type propperly. No constant chat speak."

That'd be awesome.

Don't just post agree. :P  Give reasons. There must be reasons why you find chatspeak annoying.  An intelligent, well thought out argument is better than just "oh yeah, that's a good idea"

As a site that caters primarily to those who are young and easily influenced, I say you make an enforcable rule banning drug talk from the shoutbox and forums. Lets get our wonderful Rescreatu world to help promote healthy lives!

---

Flammable did you just take Geo's last part and replace literacy with drugs.

That's pretty sad...

I also Agree with this rule, I have mesmerized my keyboard so I watch what I type on the computer instead of my fingers. Chatspeak is so annoying, and hard to translate.

Well well, I got here JUST in time to see Ricki quoting this rule from the Rules page.

"- Please take your time to make intelligent posts, use correct grammar and spelling. It would be greatly appreciated by all staff and members,"

So, we already have that rule, hence chatspeak, being unintelligent to most, is not allowed.  Further, it is not allowed, because it does not contain correct grammar and spelling.

Therefore, I'm revising this suggestion to include this rule in the tagbox rules for the shoutbox.  That way its more visible and less overlooked.

Yes, I very much agree. Chatspeak drives me crazy! So untidy! I mean seriously. Would it kill you to type out the full word and "waste" 1 or 2 seconds?

1=one 2=two

But 4 does not equal "for".  It means "four".  I don't classify not writing out numbers as chatspeak, although grammatically in a paper for class, numbers under 100 are written out. :)

My point was that I think she's overreacting. I could understand this fear about kids being impressionable about, for example, drugs.  However, I really think it's a stretch to say that children are going to forget how to write and even speak correctly because they're exposed to chat speak.  Unless Internet forums and chat rooms are your child's only sources of literature, it's safe to say they're going to know how to spell "you" and "you're/your".
