Something that's been on my mind for a while is that the site has a massive amount of really cool writing that the writers have accumulated over the years, even without all of the books actually being filled out. The trouble is, because of the risk of breaking books and the consequent expense that has driven some of the rare ones up close to 1 bil, very few people will actually read some of the on-site literature.
Removing the ability of books to break, though, would remove a lot of the challenge of competing for intellect points and the board. With that in mind, my suggestion is to implement a kind of public library, where people are able to read the content of the on-site books (with the exception of the secret recipe books) but without getting any of the points that they would have gotten by physically reading the book. That way people get to see and appreciate the writers' content, but without removing the aspect of competition from the leaderboard.
