Design A Creatu Contest!

Time to celebrate the start of a new year with a contest!
I've held one of these before, and the results were spectacular, so I'm doing it again this year.

Please read the requirements carefully, as they represent the minimum that must be submitted in order to be eligible for a prize.

The deadline is 11:59pm (res time) on the 31st January 2025, giving you a whole month to prepare your entry. After the deadline I will judge the entries based on overall quality of the entire submission and announce the winner on the 1st February.

How to enter:
This is the fun part. In order to enter, you must design your own species of creatu.

The minimum requirements for entry are:

- A name for the species

- The planet they are found on

-
A piece of writing describing the species (at least 100 words; refer to the Information > Creatu Species page tle="" target="">petinfo page to see current examples for comparison)

- Artwork showing the egg of the species

- Artwork, showing what
a natural creatu of the species would look like, at baby, adolescent,
and adult

- Artwork showing a hatch color (not natural) on your creatu at adult

- Artwork showing a dye color on your creatu at adult

- Artwork showing an existing non-OAK Res
effect (e.g. undead, frostlight, derp, etc) on your creatu
at adult.

Your artwork may take any form (hand-drawn, digital, etc).

These
are only the minimum requirements. If you want to draw lots of effects
or lots of colours then that is encouraged! Submissions that go beyond the minimum requirements are likely to be judged higher.

Just post your submission on this thread (a link to a document/file repository is also fine) One species submission per person, so make it count!

Note - all rights to any submitted artwork remain with the artist.

Species: Nytoll

(Night-All) Aka Night Owl

Planet: Uldavi & Rarely other planets

The Nytoll are ancient cosmic birds that travel through space as easily as flying through the air, elegantly twirling, and spinning through the dark vastness of space. Through nebulas, space dust, and stars alike. They are never tied to one specific planet and often times travel long distances from planet to planet. They have large lifespans and if you ever run into a adult Nytoll just know you could be catching a glimpse of something ancient.

Despite their ability to travel through space, quickly, and effortlessly, they are often times mostly encountered on Uldavi. Though there is no clue as to why they are often seen their specifically. They can be glimpsed drifting through other planet's skies, mostly at night, as they are nocturnal, but they can rarely be glimpsed out in the wild of any planet. Though the chances are very slim, but if one were ever to get a good sighting of one it would be a once in a lifetime event.

Nytoll as said above, are nocturnal, they have perfect eyesight and can navigate in the dark easily. They also seem to emanate a strange ancient magic as they fly through the skies, they often leave trails of cosmic dust in their wake lighting up the night sky and leaving a bioluminescent trail behind them that's quite breathtaking to see.

Not much is known on how they choose a mate, mate, or where they have their young, as they go out of their way to make sure their nests are kept secret. And one has not been seen by any eyes. Meaning what little information there is about them is limited at best. They seem to do well on their own, or in a group, they're friendly, sociable, intelligent, protective, caring, and kind and often seen near by another creatu or person that might need help or is in turmoil.

They are loyal and a friend for life if you happen to be lucky enough to befriend one or raise one.

They seem to wield some sort of cosmic magic as they have been known to teleport, open portals leading to other dimensions, and can use it to form various attacks for defense and offense. It's also been rumored in legend that they are born from the stars. And their diet consists on feeding on the energy of dying stars that both fuels them and their magic.

Though it's a symbiotic relationship as when a Nytoll dies of old age or otherwise the ancient magic and power it wields has been said to drift from any planet or place they are into space and amongst the energy a new star is formed.

Meet the Kyrilli!

Native to Atquati, these reclusive creatu were only recently discovered in the furthest, darkest reaches of the sea around the thermal vents which warm the planet’s waters. They are well-adapted to life in the deep: their webbed feet allow them to deftly navigate the swirling currents, and their glowing scales (each individual Kyrilli bearing its own unique pattern) serve a dual purpose: lighting their way and allowing members of their social group to recognize one another. Although Kyrilli spend most of their lives deep underwater, they can occasionally be seen near the surface on moonless nights where their flickering bioluminescence have inspired sailors’ myths and local folklore spanning generations before the Kyrilli’s official discovery.

These creatu are rarely spotted interacting with other species; however, they are known to form tightknit social groups of up to a dozen Kyrilli that play together, hunt, and defend their territory from other groups. Little else is known about their social dynamics; much research remains to be done. Fortunately, Atquati scientists have recently found that Kyrilli can be lured to the surface with other glowing items – comet fragments, for example – which they appear to collect in hidden caves deep underwater. If you befriend a Kyrilli, perhaps they’ll bring you something special from their personal hoard!

Introducing the Atmogrif!

Atmogrif
Rarity: 0% Shrine pet
Planet: Scria

Lore:
Atmogrifs are considered one of a few mythical species from Scria's creation. Born in the circling clouds above the planet, these eggs of these creatu are as light as a feather and often don't make it to hatching as they fall out of the sky very easily at the lightest breeze. Many eggs break and clatter to the ground, forming storms around where the pieces remain on the planets surface.

The eggs that do survive hatch only under special conditions, each one different than the last. Some need heavy showers, others need turbulent lightning, but all must remain in the highest clouds to stay safe.

This species is often seen as a symbol of perseverance and strength, to ignore the odds and fight beyond the hardest winds. As such, when an Atmogrif hatches, the very clouds that once protected the egg will gather around their necks and tails, forever helping them fly with the ease of the breeze itself.

Pets that are often protected and near extinction by the shrine and it's guardians are not normally allowed to accept the blessings of the gods but in the case of the Atmogrif, on dark stormy nights, sometimes an atmogrif is called upon to protect it's home and given the blessing of lightning.

Variant - Scria Elemental Atmogrif
While shrine pets are not normally allowed effects, I am a large fan of the idea that a shrine pet should be blessed by it's shrine if it's natural, similar to seasonal changes. Thus:

MUSIC:
I
have a friend who is really into music composition and we worked
together to make this quick little soundscape together to match the
Atmogrif. It's all instrumental but it's handwritten and it's only 30
seconds so feel free to listen here:

Xylarku
Planet: Atquati
Image Not Available
Xylarku are timid, but social Creatu that can be found within the depths of Atquati's waters. These Creatu grow quickly, and age can generally be determined based on how many rings are found around their body. Not much is known about how these orbital rings take shape, but research shows that they are a natural part of Xylarku anatomy. These Creatu are born with near complete blindness, but can detect changes in lighting and shadows. Regardless of their exceedingly shortsighted vision, most can navigate their environments very well thanks to the light source given off by their rings, combined with their use of echolocation and dependence on those around them.

While they can often be found in large groups of other Xylarku, it is not uncommon to find them living among other Creatu as well. While some attribute this to their easygoing nature, others theorize that their visual impairment actually keeps them from telling the difference in the type of company they keep.

Once familiar with you and their environment, they become much more confident than their initial bashful behavior and tend to be extremely loyal, affectionate companions. This, combined with their love of play, is why Xylarku are commonly referred to as the "puppies of the sea".

Name: Kageruut (Kah-geh-roo-oot)

Planet: Kageruut variants have been found on all planets with the exception of Uldavi. They are thought to have originated on Atquati, but this is unconfirmed.

Species Information: Top zoologists and botanists are still at odds over whether the Kageruut can technically be classified as a 'Creatu', indeed, they are unsure whether the Kageruut is even a true native of the Rescreatan planetary system. Discovered only recently, the Kageruut may have been part of the planetary ecosystems for centuries, or they may have appeared within a relative short time period.

Kageruut do not appear to procreate in the same manner as conventional Creatu. Instead, the infant form of the Kageruut will phase into and inhabit the seed or fruit of a native plant species and 'take root', forming a symbiotic relationship which promotes rapid growth in the new host until it begins to sprout. Upon sprouting, the newly exposed Kageruut will inhabit a container to aid its camouflage into the surroundings. During its life cycle, the Kageruut will often switch host plants when its substance becomes too large to continue being sustained by the original, leaving the former host to take root and continue its normal life cycle.

The Kageruut has very little physical substance on this plane and is able to exert only a small amount of force upon its surroundings. It is thought that the Kageruut feeds on radiation when exposed to sunlight, hence the symbiotic nature of its relationship with local flora. When threatened or in danger, the Kageruut has been observed to phase out of existence entirely, completely severing its connection with the host plant which then takes permanent root where it was dropped. It is unknown whether a Kageruut which has fully phased is ever able to reappear.

Contrary to original supposition, the Kageruut's chosen container is actually formed from its own substance and is not a physical item from which it can be removed. Often, the Kageruut will choose to imitate an item commonly found in the vicinity so that it can remain innocuous to passersby. You should never attempt to separate a Kageruut from its container or its host plant, as doing so causes immense pain.

The first recorded instances of the Kageruut's existence were on the lesser inhabited islands of Atquati, where residents reported witnessing potatoes slowly, "sneaking towards the water when they thought we weren't looking!" Variants have now been observed on Relcore, Reiflem and Scria. It is unknown whether the Kageruut is also found on Uldavi, but there are no records of its existence up to this point.

(Addition 8th Jan) When the Kageruut has cultivated an environment in which it feels safe and secure, it will begin to distribute larger portions of its substance into its root structure, growing thread-like, branching tendrils and rapidly spreading across a wide area. These connect with the tendrils of other local Kageruut as well as non-inhabited flora, forming a network which can quickly exchange information, messages and react to threats. Kageruut networks have been found to span entire landmasses and has been attributed to the successful reforestation of some areas.

It has been discovered that Kageruut variants, which have been removed from their native planet and relocated to another, are unable to connect to the local Kageruut network and occasionally display behaviours similar to an invasive species, attempting to overrun local flora and Kageruut colonies in order to proliferate itself. This leads scientists to believe that each Kageruut variant may have evolved to better integrate with the local planetary flora and is consequently seen as a 'foreign invader' when introduced to other variant populations.

(Addition 30th Jan) Local Creatu and plant enthusiast, Sin, has been travelling to various locations across the Rescreatan planetary system, attempting to catalogue different life cycle stages across the Kageruut variants and making observations on their various methods of survival. Her sketchbook, containing the preliminary results of her findings, can be viewed here:

Atquati Kageruut

Egg
The Atquati variant of the Kageruut most commonly phase into blue potatoes, often deep within the soil and close to large bodies of water. As the plant begins to spout, these potatoes make their way to the surface so that the Kageruut can emerge.
