Plot ::

In a time long before the monarchy ruled the land of Traeba, the territory was overran with witches, monsters, and thieves. It was not a good time for humans, who's population was to small to take control of anything and who were indiscriminately picked off. It was only an alliance with the tiny population of dragons who inhabited the area that allowed humans to remain in ancient Traeba. They gained protection from the dragons, could go so far as to ride them into battle against foes. In return humans did things that dragons could not; build shelters and weapons, plant and harvest crops, and domesticate animals for the dragons to feed on. Over many years, this alliance continued and humans and dragons began spreading over the land while vanquishing enemies. The two began to rule together. In time the land would be taken over and a monarchy would be put into place - who would be protected by the newly formed Royal Guard.

This story, however, began long before the monarchy. Before the alliance with the dragons, when humans were little more than large vermin on the land. A powerful wizard on a journey of self deep in the mountains of Krym stumbled upon something ancient and all powerful. Sitting at the base of a stalagmite was a fist sized gem which pulsed with golden light. The wizard, before touching the stone, took note of the runic writing along the stalagmite. Intrigued, he began researching the meanings. Though it took time, the wizard was both awed and terrified of what he found in the end. The gem was a prison for an ancient dragon spirit. According to the runes if the spirit was released by someone with nefarious intentions than the ancient dragon could cause catastrophic damage and was nearly unstoppable. The wizard, not wanting the dragons spirit himself but wanting the glory of having found such a thing, left the gem in the Krym Mountains but wrote about his discovery for others to read.

Presently, the scrolls pertaining to the the ancient dragon spirit have gotten into the hands of a corrupt man. This man was a former general in the Royal Guard - a man who was used to being respected and followed. However, the general sought too much power for himself and was kicked out of the Guard as punishment. Bitter and power hungry, the General called upon members of the Royal Guard and others to follow him against the monarchy, siting them as weak. With his own army at his back and the scrolls in hand, the General is seeking out the gem to bind the ancient dragon spirit to him to overthrow the current monarchy and take the throne as his own.

Our story begins here, with two young Royal Guard members. They've been sent with a patrol of other Guards on behalf of the king to retrieve the gem before the General does. Unfortunately their location was betrayed and just as the sun crested the horizon a large group of the Generals army descended upon the unsuspecting Guards. In the ensuing chaos all but two of the Guards and their dragons were slaughtered; some where they slept. By some miracle the two youngest Guards survived and the journey to retrieve the gem has now fallen upon their shoulders.

Dragon Rider ::
Name ≡  Gideon Savenkov
Nickname ≡ Kit
Age ≡ Twenty-three
Gender ≡ Male
Personality ≡ Kit is a bit of a no nonsense type of person, particularly when in the company of someone of a higher rank. He does not like foolishness, recklessness, or stupidity, and will not hesitate to berate or speak his mind - at least if it's newer recruits. Kit knows better than to snark to an older Guard...usually. Kit's not big on small talk, and instead prefers the silence to idle chattiness. This is not only because he dislikes small talk, but he's not great at it. His people skills need some work and small talk will show his awkwardness at it. Kit not necessarily adventurous unless his mission calls for it, but he won't go poking his nose into random caves just to see whats inside. To him, that's just asking to get it bitten off. Kit's agile and cunning more-so than physically strong, and he uses this to the best of his ability when facing opponents instead of utilizing nothing but brute strength. He has a lack of trust, which is one of his biggest flaws, and is used to doing things by himself rather than relying on teamwork. Other than that, Kit is sarcastic, a bit aloof, and extremely loyal to those he feels deserves it. He;s a bit more easy-going once he's comfortable with someone.
History ≡ Originally, Kit was supposed to join the policing force that protected his hometown alongside his brothers and father. It was a fairly large town some miles from the capital city and produced some of the wheat and corn as well as textiles for the greater kingdom. As such, as policing unit was needed to protect the wares from thieves. All of Kit's older brothers were of the force and he wanted nothing more than to join them. However, fates had different ideas and during a routine patrol checking caravan's entering the city Kit accidentally touched what appeared to be a large, shiny stone while examining one of the wagons. He did not know what he'd done at the time, but two days later he'd woken in the morning with a small, spotted dragon on his chest. Things changed quickly after that, and Kit was invited to join the Royal Guard with his new dragon to learn how to ride it and to protect a larger portion of Traeba than his own small hometown. Five years later and Kit was working on training new recruits before the fateful mission to retrieve an ancient gem.
Family ≡ His mother, father, and multiple siblings.
Relevant Relationships ≡ Just with his dragon, Aymara.
Dragon
≡ Aymara
Other ≡ Nothing of importance.

Dragon ::
Name Aymara
Nickname N/A
Age ≡ 5 Years
Gender Female
Species Dragon
Personality Aymara is a bit different than her rider. She's constantly curious and is always willing to check things out even when Kit warns her against it. She's more friendly and outgoing and is always looking to get to know strangers, even when they want nothing to do with her. On the flip side, Aymara is also hotheaded, and is always willing to fight; in particular to protect her rider. She is still young for a dragon, and her personality reflects this. Over time it will likely change some to show her true, adult nature.
History Nothing really of importance. Aymara was almost ready to hatch when Kit touched her egg, and she knew instantly that he was going to be her rider. Two days after her birth, when she was more stable, she was able to find Kit and the two have been inseparable since.
Family Unknown
Relevant relationships Her rider, Kit
Other Aymara is not her full size just yet, she's got quite a bit of growing still to do. Its only been within the last two years she'd gotten big enough for Kit to actually ride.

OoC: If there's anything you'd like changed please let me know.~

BiC: There was an eerie silence after the cacophony of battle - after the clang of weapons, roars of dragons, and the screams of the dying finally ceased. Kit stared at the chaos surrounding him, hand shaking around the hilt of his blade. The enemy had retreated when they thought no one had been left alive, their cheers and jeers fading into the distance as they flew off. Kit's saving grace had been his dragon, Aymara, who'd played dead with Kit hidden underneath her crimson wings. The cowardly move had rankled, but Kit knew that the mission was more important than dying alongside his comrades needlessly. He could grieve and rage at the world and the injustice of a surprise attack later, after the gem had been retrieved.

Aymara's soft growl brought Kit's thoughts back to the present and gaze away from the crumbled bodies littering the campsite. The spotted dragon nudged his shoulder with her muzzle, blood red eyes questioning and fearful. It was at moments like this that Kit remembered how young Aymara truly was compared to many of the other guard's dragons; that this was her first true taste of battle. There was scratches and cuts along her flanks and neck, blood on her claws and as Kit watched her the dragon was subtly shaking. "It's okay." He murmured, sheathed the blade so he could check his dragon over for serious wounds. There was nothing beside surface cuts to his relief. Aymara wasn't as strong as many dragons, but what she lacked in brute strength she more than made up for in speed and agility.

There were no shouts for help or moans of the wounded, and Kit knew that there was likely none of the Guard left alive. The aim of the attack had obviously been to kill everyone and put a stop to their mission. Sighing, Kit carefully made his way to his bedroll and retrieved Aymara's saddle and his few belongings; being careful not to look at any of his comrades while he did so. There was a lingering fear that if he did, if he saw what had become of his fellow Guard's, he'd lose his composure and likely give up. What could one person do against the General's army? Aymara suddenly huffed, scanning the area while making soft, whistling noises. Clearly searching for something. "What is it?" He asked, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Kit began trying to see what she was looking at, or looking for. It took just a second to realize something appeared to be missing, something very large and red. "Aztec?" Questioning, Kit began moving through the still forms, seeking out one in particular. His apprentice, of sorts. He wasn't close to Casey, just trained her when it was called for, but the thought that even one person survived the massacre was uplifting. Plus, Aztec was almost as good as a platoon himself. "Casey!" He dared call out, while Aymara gave a soft roar. "Casey, Aztec!"

-Casey-
As the last of the intruders left, Casey had crawled away from the bloody scene. She could not decide how she was feeling, she did not feel shocked nor scared, just nothing. A nudge against her back brought her attention back to reality. "Oh, Aztec." Casey sighed, putting a hand on his red scales and stroking him. "What are we supposed to do now?" A tear slipped and she angrily raised her hand to her face to wipe it away.

Aztec nudged again, giving her the confidence she desperately needed to stand up and return to the scene. She needed to see if there were any survivors, yet she doubted it, and find any weapons and a first aid kit if she could.

She leaned against her trusty companion as she limped, thanks to a long scratch down her leg from one of the intruder's blades, and heard her name being called. She walked around the rock pile that was blocking her way. "Yeah, I'm here." her voice was strained from her shouting and battle cries earlier.

She looked up and saw it was her mentor. She was glad it was someone she knew, although not very well, and attempted at a half smile. "What's the plan?" Casey asked, her mind telling her it was the logical thing to ask but she wasn't exactly thinking straight. "Get injuries sorted and then pack what we can and carry on?" Casey suggested.

Her eyes filled with tears again against her will as the stinging sensation came again at the back of her throat. This wasn't what she had signed up for so soon in her training, but she knew this was what it would be like and she would have to toughen up. She wiped the tears away with the back of her hand again and locked eyes with her mentor's.

Ooc; Sorry it's so short! It's been awhile since I last role played and need to get it back into the swing of things, which will hopefully be soon and mean longer replies. c:

At the answering call, Kit sighed and relief and turned to where Casey was approaching with Aztec. At first glance both appeared alright, if a bit shaken, but upon closer inspection he took note of Casey's limp and the blood along her leg. Inwardly cringing, he really hoped it wasn't anything serious that could put her out of commission. Aymara's gleeful trill was startlingly loud and Kit couldn't refrain from jumping as she bounded over to greet the other two survivors. "Aymara." He warned, wondering for how long she'd act much like a huge puppy. However, Kit followed after her; albeit at a slower pace.

Casey appeared shaken as well as injured, although was putting on a good front. Luckily she was not bawling, because Kit was not in anyway good at calming hysterical women. "I'm sure Marcus' pack is still around," mentioning the groups deceased medic stung more than it should have, "I'll go grab it and you can do something about that leg." Motioning the injured leg, he huffed softly and shook his head. "Is it alright to continue on?" With the wound mostly hidden underneath her pants he could not tell exactly how deep it was. Something dropped at his feet and Aymara chirped. It was one of Marcus' medical bag, green with a medical emblem to make it easy to spot. "Thank girl." Tossing to bag to Casey, he turned his back on the girl and crossed his arms. "I agree. We'll take as much as the dragons can carry without slowing them. Plus we need to find the Captain's map if the enemy didn't carry it off." Without it, they'd be flying blind.

Casey mumbled a thanks, catching the bag containing all that she needed. "I don't see why it isn't alright to carry on." She hissed, not exactly in a good mood from the pain. She zipped open the bag and looked at the contents. This wasn't exactly the medical supplies she needed.

She grabbed her bag off Aztec's back and grabbed the water bottle, washing the blood around and out of the wound. She wrapped bandages around her leg to cover the wound and tied it in place. She knew taking the first aid course when she was younger would help one day.

She glanced over Aztec, not seeing anything too serious. She patted him on his shoulder, cleaning the few scratches he had with water and leaving them to heal on their own.

"Any wounds I need to help fix up?" Casey asked, while searching for a particular bag that held what they would need to carry on and going through a few other bags to find any extra supplies.

OoC: Sorry, had one of those random family things come up. DX

BiC: While Casey cleaned and bandaged her leg, Kit chose to ignore her clipped words and focused on a mental list of supplies they'd possibly need. Unfortunately, he knew poor Aztec would likely take the majority of the extra supplies if he'd be willing - Aymara was built for speed and agility, not strength like the red dragon. Maybe he could make it up to him? A nice plump sheep for dinner one day; if they survived, anyway. Once Casey appeared to be up and moving around again, Kit started towards where their captain had been sleeping in hopes of retrieving the map. "Just a few scratches and bruises on me, I'll be fine. But if you could look at Aymara's cuts I'd appreciate it." He called over his shoulder. Being polite to the only other person who was now on this journey, he figured, couldn't hurt him.

The captain wasn't to be found around his tent, but all of his bags still appeared intact. Rummaging through them felt like a severe invasion of privacy, and one he'd be punished for under any other circumstances. At first it appeared the map was gone, which did not bode well for them, but a second, more thorough search finally revealed it rolled up and hidden inside of an extra pair of boots. "Got the map." He hollered to be heard over the distance, before stiffly standing once more. His own small tent was still usable, and he quickly broke it down and got it ready for flight. His bags were next, though there was very little.

"There should be extra food, medical, and warmer clothing where the pack dragons were sleeping." The smaller, non-rideable dragons had long flown off, however. "Would Aztec mind to carry it? Aymara is about at her limit without wearing her out." The mentioned spotted dragon huffed and bristled, as if realizing she was being undermined. In consolation he reached up to tweak one of her long whiskers playfully before scratching her muzzle.

Ooc; Sorry, been out the whole day and went to bed early last night. Also, going on holiday again from Wed - Sun but shouldn't be busy as I was last time I was away so should be able to reply everyday. If not, I apologize.

-Casey-

Casey walked off to Aymara, offered her hand for her to sniff and patted her on her neck before going around her small body to clean wounds. There wasn't anything big or nasty so only a wash was required.

She didn't really hear what her mentor was saying as she scratched through bags for supplies. She gathered a few medical supplies they lacked in the medical bag and grabbed as much extra food, weapons and extra clothes she could get that Az could actually carry.

She glanced over at her good-looking mentor, who she would definitely be attracted to if this wasn't their current situation, "Yeah sure." she answered him about if Aztec could carry the supplies. She felt awkward around her mentor, as she wasn't close to him nor had she spoken to him a lot.

Az snorted at her, successfully getting her attention. She blushed, grabbed the supplies and arranged it on Aztec's back so it would be comfortable. "That okay?" she whispered to her mighty dragon who just snorted in response. She patted his shoulder and looked at her mentor, "We should get going?" Casey questioned more than stating.

OoC: That's fine! As you probably noticed I don't usually reply everyday anyway.^^

BiC: Giving Aztec a grateful nod, Kit began buckling what little supplies he had together in preparation for flight. Doing so brought back a memory of his first expedition out on dragon-back. He'd not packed right, forgot a couple of smaller buckles, and half a day out everything had fallen from his borrowed dragons back. The rest of the company had laughed and supplied him with food and necessities but little else. It had been a cold, miserable few days. Since he'd always been extra careful to save himself from the embarrassment again. As if sensing her humans mind was somewhere else, Aymara chirruped and gave his arm a light nip. "Behave." Grumbling, Kit motioned for her to lay down so he could throw her saddle up on her back, just in front of where her crimson wings sprouted. After strapping her in the packs followed. "Good girl."

At Casey's question, Kit ducked underneath Aymara's serpentine neck so he could face the other human. She was, from what he knew, a few years young than him and newly joined. Kit had worked with her a little, same as he'd done with other new recruits, but didn't know much about her at all. That she was alive, though, after such a massacre and not running back home, told him enough. And though Casey might not have been his first choice, that choice was among the dead so his choices might not be great to begin with. Rubbing the bridge of his noise, Kit gave a slight nod in agreement.

Approaching Casey and Aztec he pulled the map out, unrolled it, and carefully lay it on a nearby boulder so they both could see it. "From what I can tell this was to be our path." He motioned towards a faint red line that had obviously not been there when the map was drawn. "Not much civilization between here and the Krym Mountains. Just a lot of wilderness and danger." The last words were spoken with dry sarcasm. "Seems the Esp River is our next major landmark." It was a massive, churning beast that cut through the land and took down anyone stupid enough to enter it's waters. There were also rumors of 'things' in the water; kelpies, mers, giant fish. If one was to believe such things. All Kit knew was that he wanted no part of any of it.

"Anything you want to add or disagree with?" He added, turning his head towards Casey while continuing to hold the map open. "Speak up. Captains gone and I'm not of any rank so our best bet is likely going to be to work together and make these decisions together."

-Casey-

She kneeled beside Kit to glance over the map. "How accurate is it?" she asked, it looked old and possibly outdated. Not exactly what they needed for this mission. Her eyes followed Kit's finger as he pointed out the direct route and saw nearly no water sources. They could hopefully fill their water storage at the Esp River, but she wasn't too sure. The current could be too strong and take their storage containers away or they could get into danger with something.

Deciding it was better to talk about her thoughts rather than keep them to herself, she did that, "If we stuck to the direct route there aren't many water sources along that route, and the closer we get to the Fingers or Krym, the less there are." She peered at the map, "By the looks of it anyway." She added quickly.

She got up from her kneeled position, stretched her legs and walked, or rather limped, back and fourth in thought, "We'll only get water from cities and places with life, but I don't know how often that would be. Do you have any ideas?" Casey asked, unsure and hoping she wasn't making a fool of herself.

Aztec walked over once he noticed his rider's gaze settled on him. He grunted, head butting Casey gently. She smiled and shook her head and wrapped her arms around him. She checked the saddle on his back and tightened the few things that needed to be tightened and checker her bags and supplies were secured tightly.

She took a deep breath, "Ready?" she asked Kit.

Tilting his head slightly to regard Casey from where she knelt next to him, Kit gave a vague nod at her observation before returning his attention to the map. "I'm not sure just how accurate this is. It's old, probably outdated, but I'm hoping the Captain knew what he was doing by using it to lead us." Kit shrugged a bit helplessly. It was, after all, all they had to go on. Casey's remark about their water situation was also disheartening. Though very true. The Basilisk Highlands was cold and dry, the Whispering Basin swampy and stagnant. Kit didn't know much about the Prath Forest, except that it's inhabitants were vicious and unwelcoming to outsiders. Heaving a sigh, Kit rolled the map back up and stood with a wince; the adrenaline was fading and he was beginning to feel his multiple bruises.

"Honestly, I have no idea. No idea about water, about the route, about this entire suicide mission. But," shrugging, he motioned for Aymara to bend down, "we're all that's left so we'll do what we have to do." Swinging himself up onto Aymara's saddle, Kit maneuvered himself into a comfortable position and put the map into a secure pocket for his main pack. Once he was sure everything was where it needed to be, he glanced back down at Casey. Kit w
asn't great with people, he knew this, but he was intuitive enough to notice his partner's unease where it came to voicing her thoughts. Or at least he figured that's what she was doing. "It's a good point about the water though." Hopefully a bit of praise would help her ease up, or the entire mission was going to be more of a headache than it already was. "I guess we'll fill up with as much as the dragons can carry at the Esp, then go from there. If we get too low there's a lake east of the Highlands and Whispering Basin we can make a detour to. It'll add quite a bit of time, but I guess we'll do what we have to."

Clicking his tongue, Kit grabbed onto the pommel of the saddle with one hand and a fistful of Aymara's mane in the other. The spotted dragon gave a low whistle of glee, hopped once, and with a flap of her crimson wings was airborne. Being serpentine in body shape with wings almost as large as she was, Aymara was able to zip high into the air with uncanny speed. Kit knew she wasn't physically strong, but at moments such as this, with the wind whipping past them, roaring in his ears, he'd not have it any other way. Speed and agility were just as good as physical strength, in his mind. Unable to help grinning slightly, thoughts of the massacre and their mission momentarily forgotten with the rush, Kit gave his dragons sides a slight nudge, silently telling her to level out. "We've got to wait for Casey and Aztec." He reminded her, yelling to be heard. The position of the sun helped him figure out which direction they needed to be headed, north-east, and Kit attempted to try to make out anything in that direction that wasn't green while he waited for Casey and Aztec.

Ooc; I'm so sorry. I've sat down so many times and have not known where to start! School has also been really busy and I apologize for not informing you! :c

-Casey-

Casey rubbed her dragons favourite spot, just between the eyes, and smiled as he gave a grunt of pleasure. "Let's get going." she whispered. Seeing movement from the corner of her eye, she turned her head to see Kit and his dragon lift off into the sky. Realizing they needed to get going now, she gently placed her foot in the stirrup, grabbed hold of the pommel and pulled herself into the old and worn saddle. She checked her gear once again and made sure all her equipment was tied on correctly, before giving Aztec a nudge with her left foot. He flapped his muscular wings, easily lifting himself into the sky, and they glided slowly towards Kit and Aymara.

She smiled as the breeze cooled her hot face. She let go of the pommel and took the navy blue hair elastic, that was wrapped around her wrist, off and pulled her long brown hair into a rather messy bun so her hair would not be in her face. She stretched down and patted Aztec on his shoulder. She sat behind the vertical, asking her dragon to pull up alongside Aymara. "How fast are we taking this?" she asked, reaching her hand up to play with the thing silver chain around her neck with a small diamond. A gift from her mother.

She had not ridden Az out on a mission before and was unsure how long he could fly for and at what speed, but she assumed they would be alright since she was chosen for this mission.
