Welcome!

Since I keep unexpectedly finding Asian pop and Asian drama fans here and we've been having a bit of fun over at the Quiz thread, I thought it would be better to create a hangout where we can post stuff, share news, exchange knowledge about the different cultures of Asia, and fangirl/fanboy to our hearts' content.

Asian Culture would include the cultures of every Asian country, including of course their pop music, television dramas, and movies. These would primarily be South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, but if people also want to discuss Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, India and mainland China, among others, go right ahead.

This is first and foremost a Fan Forum and hangout thread, but we will be having random little games and prizes along the way.

You might also want to take tle="" target="">the Asian Culture quiz... questions change every week. ;)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

A Very Polite Reminder to Everyone

Please read the first page of this thread first and take note of the activities and rules and stuff so things will be easier. ;)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Siggy Banners and Stuff

(I will add banners that you can put in your signatures and profiles as soon as some are made.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rules

Yes, people, of course we have to have rules. And please don't forget that the site rules and forum rules still apply in this thread. We don't want our hangout shut down, right?

Which means:

1. Please avoid making posts in other languages. The occasional "oppa" and "noona" and similar words might not be objectionable if used alone, but much as we would like to practice our Korean/Japanese/other language skills, the site rules says we shouldn't do it here.

2. Please avoid linking to off-site content that are in other languages. This goes for our favorite music videos and dramas, sorry. We can, of course, mention them by name-- they can be Googled, after all.

3. Please attribute photos, animations, and other intellectual property. A link to the source page, or a mention of the site name if the source is in another language, will be enough.

4. No shipping wars, please. You may mention your ships, but no taking exception/ being rude to others because of their ships. Be objective and fair.

5. Please don't be rude or spam.

6. As much as possible please don't double-post unless your last post was the day before. You can always edit your previous post.

6. Please follow site rules.

7. Have fun!

Resources

Interested but don't quite know where to start? This post mentions some resources that you might find useful.

  • For Asian pop/rock songs that are not in English (like K-pop), the complaint I hear most often is "But I don't understand the lyrics!" Fear not, Google, YouTube and Dailymotion are your friends. You can easily google the ti
tle of the song, band name, and add "eng sub" for "english subtitles." If you're keen on practicing, say, your Korean skills, you can add "han eng sub rom" for "hangul, english subtitles, romanization" to get videos with both Korean and English subs.

  • Here's my playlist in tle="" target="_blank">a blog post, for people who need some clues as to songs and dramas.

  • For Korean dramas and insights into Korean pop culture, my favorite place to be is Dramabeans. Bloggers javabeans and girlfriday are Korean-Americans who comprehensively discuss not only the dramas but also explain aspects of Korean culture shown in them. Wondering why, after the guy and the girl quarrel, he keeps trailing her around silently like a puppy? Why people always end up getting piggybacked? What the traditional Korean house is called? Or that tent-like roadside place where people go at night to eat and get drunk? Or those cylinder-shaped orange-red snacks that people keep eating? Or why the word "oppa" seems to have a lot of meanings? It's all in there.

  • For a list of my favorite dramas see tle="" target="">my drama list.

If anyone has their own resources (legal, that is) they'd like to share, please do so in this thread and I'll add them to the list. :D

OMG I had the feeling Kangawoob would somehow show up. :D :D

Fiiiine. Since we're talking Kigurumi here.

Vocabulary word of the day: Kigurumi

"Kigurumi (l:lang="ja">着ぐるみ) is the Japanese name for costumed performers who represent cartoon characters, often animals. The name comes from the Japanese verb kiru (l:lang="ja">着るto wear) and noun nuigurumi (l:lang="ja">ぬいぐるみ stuffed toy)...
...Kigurumi also is used to describe full-body hooded animal pajamas styled after animals or cartoon characters. Sometimes called "disguise pajamas" or onesies, the clothing is normally worn non-commercially as Japanese street fashion or as sleepwear, and is not intended to function as a performance costume."

Have an old but still relevant photo of hamster Jae-jae-- this came from a Gaia Online forum.

Hello ! My posts will be mostly Exo related =) I am your friendly Exo guide and will help you get to know all members in no time !

Today i will be introducing the third member to debut in Exo. As you know, Exo is made up of both chinese and korean members and split to two subunits. Exo-k and Exo-M
So meet my bias number 2. Huang Zi Tao <3

Sm pretty much made a very different image for Tao when he first debuted.
He was portrayed as this badass kickass character because of his ability to do martial arts.

But!
The Tao IRL is so different ! Here are some fun facts about this lovable boy :

1. He is terribly afraid of ghosts. Even more so than anyone here.
2. He is terribly afraid of BUGS. yes BUGS. Baekhyun and Chen ( two other members in the group) have once teased him saying that all someone has to do is to hold up a bug to Tao and he would most likely scream "Go away GO AWAYYYY !!" ( exact quote of Baekhyun) - very easily will lose to opponents despite his pro martial arts skill xD
3. His nickname is Kungfu Panda Tao, Peacock Oppa and King of Selca (within the group)
4. He sings when he bathes xD He was in a hotel singing GD's crayon when sasaengs next door recorded his singing and spread it on the net like wildfire. He was so upset about it and embarassed ! But we netizens found it adorable <3
5. Maknae of Exo M
6. He makes a buttload of mistakes in variety shows when doing martial arts but is super cool when he gets them right xD
7. All members of Exo have accompanied him to shower ( except for Luhan and Lay) Even going so far as to stand outside and wait for him for 30min to exit the shower room because he is that afraid of ghosts xD
8. Got bullied by Korean Sm trainees because he debuted in a year ( talented rapper he is ^^ )

And thats all about my lovely tao <3

Change of plans.
This is an introduction of snsd as a whole 8)
I will introduce the members individually later on >)

Names: Girls' Generation, So Nyuh Shi Dae (SNSD), Shoujo Jidai
((BUT WE ALL KNOW THIS))

Below are the answers to a high difficulty game called "List all SNSD members in 30 seconds".
-Taeyeon-
-Jessica-
-Sooyoung-
-Sunny-
-Hyoyeon-
-Tiffany-
-Seohyun-
-Yoona-
-Yuri-

Did you get them all? 8D

I was gonna do the mundane "ti
tle tracks" "awards" "dramas and competitions" and all that stuff but then i realised that i'm not typing up a wiki and my duty as your all-rounded SNSD guide is to introduce you to a side of Girls' Generation that you have never known.

//CACKLES EVILLY//

1. SNSD actually has a lot of female fans like myself. Many people find that strange but you will be able to see why 8) To the inner Sone community, THEY ARE OUR OPPAS.

#betterthanyouroppas is a very generic tag in the sone community.

2. SNSD is also not all that pretty with their words and actions.

3. SNSD has a few good dancers, but a typical Sone hobby is observing each and every one of the members (ie. replaying videos nine times) and finding many many holes in their performances and music videos.

and last and literally least

((this one's for blue))

4. dw I mean even if they're like the abovementioned LIKE ALL OTHER KPOP IDOLS they have 200% ability to take your breaths away and make your heart burst out of your ribcage

5. And like the many scars of life and time that all people have, SNSD has been through a lot to become what they are today. They weren't always so widely loved and I daresay that they've had it a lot harder than most, what with the black ocean and being the first kpop group to have an official anti fan-club.

But this makes me so much prouder of them than any other star I have idolised; for making their way through everything, from the departure of loved ones to the judgement of the masses and bearing every hardship since the first day they became trainees. Sones will always be proud of them for making it this far. And we will always believe that they deserve everything they have.

6. Like all idols are to their fans, SNSD will always be a source of strength and motivation for me to be a better person. 8)

”How long do we rest? Around 4 hours. We fill up the sleep we don’t get during travel time. It’s fine.” - Kwon Yuri (Y-Star Live Power Music, 2nd May 2010)

“We can at least go backstage where it’s cool and get rest, but the fans have to stay and watch in the heat. It’s not me mom…it’s the fans who have it hard.” - Kim Taeyeon (during one of SNSD’s concerts, as told by her mom to a fan)

“I’m crying because I’m touched by my members who always try to look out for me.”- Tiffany Hwang (Strong Heart Ep.5, 2009)

“In the early stages of their career, we made the girls eat at the table and we (staff) were eating on the floor. And one member started to cry because she saw that all the staff unnies and oppas were eating on the floor… It was Taeyeon.” Suhjin, SNSD’s hairdresser (Taeyeon’s Chin Chin Radio, 13th January 2009).

“I think it's thanks to all the loving fans over anything else. This is not a day for us to be congratulated, but a day for us to congratulate the fans. We can only shine brightest as SNSD when SNSD stand on one stage as nine.” - Kwon Yuri (GDA, 9th Dec 2010)

“If I end up showering first, I shower really quickly for the sake of the other tired members.” - Lee Soonkyu (Night Star Ep.27, 2010)

“Between people who truly care and love each other, there are times where you don’t need to say anything at all. Those emotions that are hard to express with words. Things like “I love you” and “Thank you”…you don’t really need to say those words.” -Kim Taeyeon (Taeyeon’s Chin Chin Radio, 13th January 2009).

This post is dedicated to my 9 angels who never forget their fans and have so much love for those around them and for the world.

“Are you watching, SONE? ^^” - Choi Sooyoung (SMA, 19th January 2012, upon SNSD receiving Best Popularity Award).

Awesome intro, Life :3

(Seunggi thinks so too. :D | Source: Tumblr )

Pffft, do I spot a GIF from Prime Minister and I ? :D

--------------------------------------

Fiiiiine. Imma do an intro too, but it's not of a person. :D

It's the main reason I'm here today, with this thread and this love for K-pop, K-rock, and K-dramas.

Lee Seung-gi was the first Korean pop singer I appreciated, and because of his songs, I became open to listening to other K-pop songs. And I only "discovered" him because of a drama--

Shining Inheritance, also known as Brilliant Legacy.

(Source: cafeaaliyyah.blogspot.com)

You've got Lee Seung-gi, Han Hyo-joo, Moon Chae-won, and Bae Soo-bin in probably their earliest big roles-- when I was reading up on this drama, in articles and blog posts and recaps made shortly after it aired, people were commenting that for a drama with rookie stars, it was earning big ratings.

I didn't know that back then. But I kept tuning in, wanting to know if Eun-sung would overcome her problems, if Hwan would grow up and turn over a new leaf, if Jun-se and Seung-mi would each find their own happiness. Even if Hwan was such a jerk at first that I wanted to smack him, I ended up liking him more and more along with Eun-sung. Hey, even if other people hated Seung-mi, I felt sorry for her-- to the extent that I've taken her name for one of my usernames.

About Seung-mi, maybe it's this quote that describes her best:

"Hwannie oppa is my life... he is the air that I breathe... the earth... the earth upon which I stand."
-Yoo Seung-mi in Shining Inheritance

We know it's not right to be so obsessed and dependent, and yet knowing that Hwan is probably the only person who ever really cared for her, we can understand where she's coming from. Seung-mi's confused and jealous and has gotten her feelings for Hwan as oppa and best friend all mixed up with love, or at least, what she thinks is her love for him.

The main difference between her and Eun-sung is that Eun-sung is stronger-- Eun-sung picks herself up and goes on determinedly. Seung-mi is weaker, and susceptible to her mother's control, and would have a longer and harder journey to getting on her own feet and finding herself. At times I had the feeling that since there are other dramas with female lead characters not unlike Seung-mi, she's the second lead only because in this particular drama, Eun-sung's the heroine.

Just the same, Hwannie and Eun-sung's interactions are always cute. Sometimes a bit dorky and awkward, but even when they're bickering, they're sooo cute. And it's fun to see Hwannie changing bit by bit because of it.

See?

(Source: www.nemopan.com)

(Source: kawaii.princess.pinger.pl)

(Source: soompi)

(Source: tumblr)

(Source: tumblr)

(Source: tumblr)

Shining Inheritance's OST includes the following songs:

The Person Living In My Heart (Nae Gaseume Saneun Saram) - Isu (MC the MAX)
Love is Punishment - K.Will
Spring Rain - Ji Hye
Crazy in Love - Ji Sun
Will You Marry Me - Lee Seung-gi

Yeah, the drama contains the usual suspects-- Candy Girl, check; first-class jerk chaebol heir, check; clingy second lead girl, check; super-sweet second lead guy, check; evil stepmama, check; people keeping secrets from everyone else, check...

But everything is just so good when you're watching it, sob.

And...

Who cares about all that, when I believe in you, when I like you, when I want to be with you?
-Sunwoo Hwan in Shining Inheritance

Gawd, I love you, Hwannie. :3
