You can have as many pets as you can afford.
You can create a showroom and store them in there, but you have to keep upgrading it so they will fit.
If you decide to keep a lot of pets on your profile, make sure you remember to feed them and keep your food pen stocked. I think if you are a rancher, you can have up to 25 pets on your profile before it won't let you hatch any more and 15 if you are a merchant.
