Hello!

It's the final year of my high-school years and i'm doing a graphic novel for one of my projects. The subject is 'English extension 2' and basically i need to create something extremely conceptual and metaphorical because.. *sighs* it's English. LOL. :). To further enhance the quality of my project  - I want to get as many perspectives as i can ~ The more perspectives i get, the better. SO. PLEASE. Even if you're just a lurker, a new comer, a shy person ; whatever .. REPLY D; Even if you don't know what it is - just answer with a 'don't know.' xD. I don't care if you give me a page full of info or two words. They're all important ~ ;o

Note: YOU DON'T NEED TO BE AUSTRALIAN TO ANSWER THIS. :D. But, if you're an aussie (sydney or not), please tell me~
Also. Be honest. Extremely. Honest. Like.. don't say all this 'ah yeah i think it represents yadiyadiya'. ... Don't go metaphorical at me. >:(!!

Here's a truthful image of my views. I used to see the opera house as 'oh wow. a pretty building. in australia. Take a photo. Get out.'
No joke. And i'm born and raised here. :x. Obviously my views have changed.. if not i wouldn't be doing this as a project. lol. xD.

SO. Answer please :D??

What are your views/first impressions on the tle="" href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/38/Sydney_opera_house_side_view.jpg">Sydney opera house
Age:

Thank you ;). Grab a friend and help me if you're bothered (i doubt you'll be bothered. lol.)

The first time I saw the Sydney Opera House (which was when I was 6 or something) I seriously thought it was an enormous tent. I thought it was cool and asked my dad if I could go and he was all like 'NO WHY DO YOU WANT TO GO THERE?! D<'

I'm 18 now and my impression now as someone who is looking forward to studying architecture in uni is that the Sydney Opera House is a prime example when preconceptions of a building are not used. It takes the idea of using unusual shapes, never going with the thought 'I saw so and so do this, I like it and want to do it myself'. It's an original idea what doesn't care what other people think. I think it is a prime example of Australian architecture (which I think is awesome sauce, certainly better than Singapore and Britain) as it really kicked started the the idea of slapping weird-ass-but-tasteful everywhere (which is a contrast to Britain's 'weird-ass-but-just-plain-weird-ass-and-ugly').

Also, since you're doing a graphic novel, I'd like to lend some help. For one (we had to do 12 minimum) of my final projects for Art (at high school level) was a graphic novel (which was extremely metaphorical and conceptual). If you need someone to proofread the storyboard or suggest ideas, pop me an rmail ;D

Thank you for sharing Ping :DDD!! + Thank you for offering your help xD. I'm not the best artist though so -coughcough- im shy to show it ;). Perhaps when i start feeling confident - i'll be glad to share to the public for .. criticism and such D;

Hehe, the opera house was designed by some danish architect ~ It's cute because the history + your views are almost ironic yet lovely ~ ;o I think the architecture is pretty unique as well~ . (Also, Best of luck with your architectural studies >)!  )

Anyways, thanks again for sharing~ xD!

Late reply lol

I know a non Aussie made it. But if you look at all the amazing buildings in teh world, they aren't normally designed by architects of the home country yet they scream whatever country they're in. I know where I live (Brunei) some of the most awesome buildings were designed by Brits. The Malaysian Petronas Towers was designed by an Argentinian architect. My favourite building in China (the Guangzhou opera house) was designed by an Iraqi architect. That's the magic of an architect, they create something that suits their setting rather than themselves. I don't think it's ironic, it's just reality that we are in a world where art isn't selfish anymore. We gain more love and respect through making things for others. In general, I think the Sydney Opera house kind of represents Australian architecture, it doesn't deserve to be isolated from its fellow buildings just because a Danish person designed it. Really, it shows how our prejudices in art are a little silly and unnecessary. It teaches us to judge without considering who made it or what it's made of. We love it for what it is and that's how I think we should learn to love things.

Also, I don't intend to critique your work, I just wondered if you want any pointers for writing and designing the whole thing. I don't really care how good you are because I know you're working towards something and you have potential ;D

Oh hehe xD. It's fine ~ Nobody else seems to be replying this thread anyways ;w;

Thank you for your view , again xD. Perhaps my use of the word 'ironic' wasn't exactly the best word to use xD. Sorry~! But what you said is absolutely quite true :) and quite helpful for my project and views - as i need & should consider all human prejudices etc ;o.

Oo. I guess the only stress i have for my project is time management and the quality of my artwork o_o. Story&concept wise - it's best to talk to my teachers for this as they know what to expect for the course c:.

I'm planning to use Flash for creating my overall graphic novel, so any tips on that program would be awesome (as i'm not the best at this program. i only know the basics D: or atleast ; enough to make a graphic novel).

Artwise ; urgh. I'm still learning.
If you have any tips of .. mm.. probably human anatomy and maybe 'colour-choosing' that'll be so wonderful .. that i'd glomp u if that was physically possible ;w; ..   I've been roaming around the internet searching up tutorials and such.. but it's hard since everyone has their own ways of doing things. So... I guess I'm at that 'beginner's experimental stage' xD.

Anyways, thanks for replying :P.

I'd have to see samples of your work in order to help you with anatomy and colour schemes. If you could give character sheets and stuff I can help you with the colour schemes.

Here's how I did my colour schemes for my comic:

The colours I chose are symbolic though. The only colours that exist there are the primary colours. The sky is blue as it represents the universe and our insignificance in the world (that's why everything is grey). The eyes of the robots are coloured (has nothing to do with portal. It's just that blue and yellow are complimentary to each other) to show life in a desolate place. The ferris wheel is red as it's used to emphasize joy and life. Your colour scheme may not be symbolic but I can help you with the colour design and making it look cool in general ;D

A good tip for you is to try to simplify your style and do something you're comfortable with since you're going to draw them same characters over and over again. Do quick thumbnails when planning pages. No point in mapping out the whole thing as a draft and needing to change everything once you're doing with something that took you like half an hour to draw.

Asdfghjk. Your comic looks pro *o*.

Sadly i dont really .. have examples where i worked hard in anatomy and such so.. i can't really show u any D;. I'm still @ the beginning of my project and im just planning everything and experimenting with everything x.x; Though, this is technically not important since they're not judging me on the accuracy of my drawings. xD. But..  the better - the better. You dun have to help me with this though ~ when the time comes i'll ask my artist friends  ;o. lolol~

Ah yes, i think a colour design would be awesome D: ~ Since i can't draw well ; i might as well colour well. lol. My given genre is 'Romanticism' (Uh. like all that 'nature' 'imagination' 'idealism' stuff) - so i was planning for .. a refreshing soft tone for my story xD. Or to be more specific .. 'something nice to read after a long day at work' kinda tone c; .

I've been just testing with soft pastel colours now and such but.. i my worry is that i don't know when .. 'two colours look good together'. o_o. You know, if i grab two soft colours and shove them together on the same palette - would it be ugly? lol. All that xD.

Also. THUMBNAILS *O* Asdfghjk! I must work on that. I've got myself a stick figure storyboard and that's it xD. LOL. Alrighty >:D. This thread is motivating me to stop procrastinating. xD

Stick figure storyboard is perfect. Sometimes people put a lot of detail in their storyboards and it just ends up in the bin. Also, how many pages is it? xD

With the whole 'do these two colours look good together' shouldn't be a problem. I assume it's meant to be extremely pastoral, so sticking to things that seem natural would always work. The only way you could ruin your colours is by writing a sparkledog into the comic ;D

Ah. Ok thank you :D. Natural colours, right >:)!  I'm not a very confident person as you can see xD and perhaps i'm slightly a perfectionist o3o ~. Forgive me . LOL.

Hm. Storyboard. Well - i wouldn't even call it a storyboard because i basically scribbled all over pages. LOOL. But.. Let's just say that i need to draw 33 pics :D Though, some pictures includes stuff like.. head-movement etc.. [But ofcourse, who knows.. it could change xD].

Asdfghjk ;w;. Though it may not seem like it - you're helping me tons already by giving me motivation/reminders to do my project ;w;. Thank you so much~

I assume that nobody visits the 'Off-topic' section these days D; .

My first impression was, "Woah. That is amazing."
I thought it was some place where a leader of a country might do work, and that was when I was 7.
I actually went there once. Couldn't go inside, but it was still pretty amazing.
I used to have interests in become an architect when I grow up, but then I realized I started to suck at math. :I
I saw the Opera house when I went to Sidney when I was 11. :D
But I first saw it when I was 7?
But if you mean like, right now for age, I'm 12.
[Turning 13 is September, woo! :u]

Clouding, just so you know. You can improve in math. Seriously. When I was in IGCSE (equivalent to year 10-11) I got a U (ungraded -the worse of the worse) in math. I worked hard for the next two years when I was in year 12-13 and am predicted to get a 7 (the highest level achievable) in math. Also, I am going to start a course in architecture in the next few months. I can tell you that you don't have to be brilliant in maths in order to do architecture. You just need a passing grade (like a C or something). What really matters is your creativity. They're not expecting you to be an engineer, but an artist.

If I can make a tremendous improvement in math in 2 years, it's no problem for you in 5 years. So work hard and always try your best!

(I think maths is fun btw xD)

Haha yes. ofcourse :). I used to cry when i did maths because i .. was so horrible at it - that grown adults starting calling me 'unintelligent' and such :/. & Basically i felt .. well. stupid, dumb useless and all that. Even my very own tutor implied it towards me D: (changed tutors though. thank gosh)

I basically just practiced like hell (to prove people wrong xD) and i improved dramatically c: !! Though i'm not the 'best' ; i'm doing a high level of maths now which not every one could easily walk into and do >;D .

Yeah. Regardless - i'm like extremely slow at solving problems ; and i dislike maths . lol. I guess.. just don't say you're dumb D; because once you announce it - you're basically convincing yourself that. xD.

+ I want to be your age again ;w;   /// *grabby hands & humina x3*

Okay. i better not get off topic o_O.

My first impression as a small child was a giant swan on water, but with its head down, perhaps preening its feathers (I was a bird freak back then.)

Now when I look at it, I probably over-analyzed things to the point it's silly. lol. To me, it makes me think of a group of people (like an ethnicity or something), because there are all these white triangle sort of things all bunched up together that all look the same on the outside, but when you take a closer look inside, they're all different.

Hope it helps. Good luck on your project! :)
