My original planned ti
tle was "Obama is trying to eat the internet :O" but that might considered "degrading" or "aggressive" to some. But believe or not, Obama is noming on the net.

Yeah, this was just brought to my attention. I was just getting ready to sleep on my couch with Lopez Tonight playing in the background and there it was. George Lopez announced that Obama has been given the power to "turn off" the internet in the United States in a "state of Emergency". All I could say was: "What the ----" (not finishing that sentence, thankyou!)

I didn't think Lopez was the type to start a scam of that level so I went skimming around the internet and found many websites confirming it. I picked a couple of quotes from two websites that I think sum this episode up nicely.

From WebProNews

"In short, the President could shut down much of the Internet if he thought necessary. The Secretary of Commerce would also be given "access to all relevant data concerning [critical] networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access" in the event of a cybersecurity emergency."

And AmericanDaily says

"There is only one reason for Obama to have a Kill Switch for the Internet. That is for control of the citizens of America. Parse it any way you like, that is the bottom line."

I totally agree. I never supported Obama to begin with and I want to hear from everyone, Obama Haters, Obama Lovers, Internet Users, American Res Users who's pets are now in constant threat of dieing from "Obamanation", and all the non-Americans who probably think America has turned into the craziest place on earth for crazies....

I heard about this on the daily show, and i don't think a "kill switch" for the net would be good, it would affect the rest of the world as well as the US

I never really supported him anyway. And I think that is horrible. Maybe for a few hours it would last but it would probably last a few days and then my pets might die.

I agree, Jemi. A huge block of communication would cause businesses to falter, hurt families, and do plenty of other things we might not even take into consideration.

And Lake, he can shut it off for four months. The only pets that would survive are the ones with a colossal food pen.

being an Obama hater I never liked him to begin with so the fact that this has come into play makes me really (not aloud to say)! Not really for the fact of my pets but because I use the internet for so many things that if it got shut down I would litterly have nothing within 30miles to do. Also the fact the major buissness would be killed, families could go broke and that would plain up be the down fall of the country! Then you have the fact that so many people use the internet for school he would basicly be deaning the country the oppertunities to learn.

"Learn from history or your bound to repeat it"

I know I probly said it wrong but oh well.

So that is what I think about Obama controling peoples lives/internet. to sum it up: Destruction.

You people need to think about the context in which an Internet "kill switch" would be used.  President Obama isn't doing it for fun, or to screw with people, it's to be used in a worst case scenario in which hackers or cyber terrorists have used the internet to destroy or gain control of something vital, like the databases at the pentagon or the guidance systems of our commercial airlines.  Compared to the risk of people being endangered or killed, I think our virtual pets take second place, don't you?

And don't flame me saying "Yor just some Obama luver!"  either.  I didn't vote for either of the candidates in the Presidential election.  I just have the ability to look at the bigger picture here.

P.S.  Did any of you care when George Bush allowed illegal wiretaps and the repealing of the Bill of Rights?  Or did you not care as long as it didn't impact your lives?

I'm sure we're going to end up LIKE china or occupied BY china if the government keeps going the way it has. You know in China the government controls the internet? It's full of propaganda and lies, and the dictators make sure no one knows the truth because it would harm their own image.

Terrible. I hate Obama. Did you guys know we're living in the end times? Read Revelation and do some research online (The book of Revelation in the Bible )

I find it incredibly outrageous the way you people throw around the word 'hate'.

I completely agree with Mychelle. If anything, I support the fact that he can do that..having the power to possibly save the country from a crisis is worth a few days of not being able to check your Myspace. -_-

gravy who check there myspace any more?

I do agree that in the end we will end up like China in the long run we are headed that way already. Obama is said to want the counrty to be like that. if that did happen there would be a riot though.

"But don't worry we will all die in 2012 anyway"

Don't remember who said it but someone did.

It's more than just a few days. Its a few months! It's quite possible that turning off the internet could do a lot more damage to this country than a cyber terrorist attack. Mychelle, did it ever occur to you how much /everything/ depends on the internet. I'm not just talking about a virtual pet site, I'm talking about cutting off a major way of communication for families, friends, businesses and other things. So I really don't think you're looking at the bigger picture.

And it's not necessarily this particular thing that bothers me--but don't get me wrong, I live in a very small town where I have little to no friends; loosing the is a very bad thing for me-- it's that Obama seems to be going off on a long chain of idiotic ideas. He's not experienced enough to be president and he seems to be trying to turn America into something similar to China, like Kohawko said.

Also, I really wasn't aware of politics when Bush was president, I was younger then and had a different view of the world. But if I had been aware at that time. I would have cared. Foolishness and corruption in the government ticks me off, no matter if it could affect me or not.

I think the only /good/ thing Obama has done is alert America to all the evils going on in the government. My only hope is it's not to late to solve it.

Zombie:  The Internet is Not something that people need to survive, like food or water.  I think you'll be able to survive not emailing family members for awhile.  Try writing a letter or phoning them if you want to hear from them.  I lived for 24 years without any internet connection in my home.  It's not hard to do.

And as for those who compare America under Obama to China, do any of you actually know anything about life in China?  Read this excerpt from an article concerning government censorship in China.

The Chinese government uses different means of intimidation to control the media and induce journalists to censor themselves rather than risk punishment. Censorship tactics include:

  • Dismissals and demotions. One of the most common punishments, say watchdog groups, is to fire or demote editors and journalists who publish articles objectionable to the CPD, as in the case of Bao Yuenyang's forced move from his former editorial position at theChina Economic Times over allegations of contaminated vaccines in the Shanxi Province.
  • Libel. Government officials occasionally use accusations of libel as a way to intimidate media outlets and publishing houses. Cases range from a journalist charged with libel for writing pieces critical of Communist Party leaders on foreign websites to an author whose book about the extortion of farmers by local officials was banned after one of the officials sued him and his publishing house.
  • Fines. In August 2007, China p*censored*ed the "Emergency Response Law," which bans the spread of unverified information regarding riots, disasters, and other emergencies. Originally, the law threatened to fine media sources up to $12,500 for violations, but it was redrafted with more ambiguous language before it was p*censored*ed.
  • Closing news outlets. News organizations that cover issues the CPD considers cl*censored*ified face closure. In a 2005 report, the People's Daily said 338 publications were shut down the previous year for printing "internal" information.
  • Imprisonment. As of December 2009, China had at least twenty-four journalistsimprisoned, making it the world's biggest jailor of reporters for the ninth year running, according to CPJ. Reporters without Borders estimates thirty journalists and seventy-two "netizens" and cyber dissidents are jailed. One incarcerated foreign correspondent, Ching Cheong of Singapore's Straits Times, was arrested in 2005 while reporting about leaders within the Chinese Communist Party. Cheong was sentenced to five years in prison, plus one year's deprivation of political rights. His arrest had a chilling effect on press freedom in Hong Kong, where he was based. In December 2009, Chinese intellectual Liu Xiaobo was sentenced (Guardian) to eleven years in prison for publishing controversial opinions on the Internet and for his participation in the launching of Charter 08, a manifesto signed by prominent Chinese intellectuals, government officials, and activists, calling for political and human rights reforms in China.
  • Self Censorship. The mere presence of post-publication censorship and the vague and selective rules surrounding "state secrets" and other "taboo topics" are usually enough to enforce self-censorship in newspapers and other media outlets. Chinese columnist Chang Ping, an advocate of free speech who lost his job over commentary on Tibet, has written on his blog about the struggle for journalistic ideals amidst a culture of self-censorship: "I am afraid of other people praising me as a brave newspaperman, because I know I am full of fear in my heart. In my various media positions in the past decade, what I've practiced most is avoiding risk. Self-censorship has become part of my life."

...Internet is connected all throughout the world. Not just U.S. If so, how could we talk to people, like Fizzeh, who are in another country? I mean, I know they're different branches, but still, how could he shut off internet for JUST U.S.? Anyways, I stand neutral on this agreement. I'd sure hate to have to leave my pets dying for a while, but if its to save the country, I wouldn't mind. However, like Zombie said, businesses depend on it. If he did shut it off, the economy would drop like a stone in an endless chasm.

I just can't wait till I am old enough to leave this country. That's all I'll say.

I know this is a few post back but whatever:

".having the power to possibly save the country from a crisis is worth a few days of not being able to check your Myspace. -_-"

Um, it's going to take more than just a few days to get the net up for the entire US. Not to mention, like stated before, the net connects the whole world where it is available which is a good chunk. If he kills the net it is going screw the whole world up with communications which could also screw up any business the US has with anyone and, depending on the time to idiot picks to pull the switch, it could cause issues with our military and present/possible allies.

Now as for the idea itself, I disagree with it entirely. It seems completely ridiculous to have that kind of power along with all the other power that...thing has and I honestly can't comment anymore than that or I will be banned about a million times over. However, I would like to say that the day that..gets kicked outta office, I will be one VERY happy person.

This has turned into a rant thread about President Obama, and I'm not going to waste my time trying to debate with people who are so obviously biased against the man.  So, this is my last post, and I'll just leave you all with your small-minded opinions.

Now that is /incredibly/ rude Mychelle! And it has not turned into a rant thread. All we are is worried about America and the state of our countries stability. Obama should not have that kind of power. America is built on checks and balances and this kill switch has shifted the tide of power. If anything you are the one who is small-minded because you cant take that we elected such a person into office. The only reason you aren't posting anymore is because you know we are right.
