Hey everyone,This is not exactly Rescreatu-related, but it may end up affecting Rescreatu if it passes. Not sure how many of you are aware, but in the US there is a bill called SOPA (short for the Stop Online Piracy Act) which threatens to give media companies the power to censor anything - ANYTHING - they feel is copyright infringement. This includes censoring YOUTUBE, FACEBOOK, even WIKIPEDIA, and that's only the beginning.I encourage you to write to your state representative or sign an online petition, or, as me and my friends have been doing, changing/blacking out our Facebook profiles (if you have one) just for today, to coincide with the English Wikipedia's 24-hour blackout today. Here is a great video for more information - (please note this link leads OUT of Rescreatu)http://vimeo.com/31100268?utm_source=thedjlist.com&utm_medium=thedjlist.com_link&utm_content=dj_profile_link&utm_campaign=APPLICATIONS
Sign a petition - (link to outside of Rescreatu; if you're under 18 please get parent permission or something before you sign)
Hope you will join us, or if not, do inform others of this bill and make your voice heard to Congress!
And even if you DON'T live in the US - PLEASE do what you can to tell the US government, that SOPA is not meant to be. In fact, if the US passes this bill, other countries may follow suit. Internet censorship destroys the point of the Internet.
they/them/theirs :)

I had a feeling when I clicked this it would be about SOPA....
I am against it too (and as much as I would dislike being restricted on the internet, I would almost a radical change, just because it would be interesting to see how people react and so that one day I can act like an old fart and go "when I was a kid things were different".....not the point) but would it affect rescreatu as a game? I thought it targeted any sort of copyrighted material, and I thought that rescreatu had its own copy right (and, unlike youtube, doesn't rely on users posting things up there) so would it radically effect res?
(Just to make sure we are clear I am anti SOPA, copyrighted stuff should be protected, but I think they are going about it the wrong way)

Yes, Rescreatu could get taken down.
SOPA's motive is to shut down any website that infringes on the theft of copyrighted material, in any and every way possible, by any amount of offenders. Now, a lot of people do that here, often without realizing.
What about having icons, backgrounds or images on your profile that you borrowed from a website, without having any ownership of the icon, background or image itself? You didn't ask or pay to use it, yet it still belongs to someone, even if it's open and free to use. Or, for roleplayers, what about when you use other people's art for character bios, taking them off places like DeviantART - without asking for permission to use it? If all this isn't a form of stealing - however harmless or without ill intention - then what is?
SOPA wants to avoid this kind of thing happening, for anything copyrighted - whether it's music, artwork, films and videos, ect. If people keep using material from other websites, from people they did not ask permission to use from, then SOPA, I think, could ultimately have a right to kill this website :c
To an extent I sympathise with PARTS of the bill - I don't like the idea of people helping themselves to others' hard work, particularly art. A lot of artists get seriously miffed when it happens to them. But shutting down entire websites because of a few bad apples? Really? That's just letting everyone down. Even those who work hard themselves to get things done. Everyone's punished for one person's mistake. And that stinks.

I've drawn things for people at school before, when I was younger. Occasionally I still get someone asking me to, but that happens rarely anymore. Usually someone asks me to do something like that at the beginning of class, but still. Usually the drawings are just quick sketches, but I never know when I hand them off whether I'll be mentioned as the original owner. I can sympathize with artists who post their work online, whether digital or traditional. But I don't think SOPA is a good way to go about this.
For one, a lot of websites would cease to exist, especially youtube. Youtube is full of videos of songs and video game tutorials and such, even movies. All of that would be taken down. Plenty of other websites would too. It's like Wolf said, 'punishing everyone for one person's mistake?'
It's not fair to those of us that set goals, and work hard for things. To basically shut down a website because a few people did something wrong, which probably wasn't their intent, everyone would lose the game, literally.

I have no sense in music or in how it how it is made or marketed, but I think they get hit the hardest on a daily basis. I think that downloading songs is more common then movies or games, but that could just be me. And although I think that music makes should defiantly get what they deserve for what they create, but as far as what is fair and what isn't it starts becoming a grey area when people use them for AMV's and such. Though I am not sure how you legitimately put one on the internet with out it being copyright infringement. (I could explain my view points on AMVs, but this post is long enough as it is XD)
My lack of music knowledge aside, I am now going to take up the stand from the view point of drawings and such (because I actually have some sort of skill with drawing). Would I be irritated if some one stole my character or picture? Yes, I would be pissed off. Would I be if some one credited me? Not really. I do think that artists who work hard on their work need to be protected, but *d*ucking over the internet won't solve anything and the ones who are determined pirates will continue to do so.
Short version: Is this a problem? Yes. Is this the way to fix it? No.

i don't like SOPA but i do understand people not wanting other people to use their art work, music, etc. without permission however if you don't want people to be able to steal your work then why put it on the internet in the first place? by doing that you can automatically assume that someone somewhere will use what you made. idk that's just my opinion on it.
Work in progress

punk, I understand your point completely.
Yet people update art onto the web for many reasons. They could be rolepla[injection]yers who like to draw their characters and show fellow rolepla[injection]yers what their characters look like. They could be artists who trade online for a living, displaying and selling their work to customers over the net. They might even be searching for jobs or commissions and prove their talent to clients by posting it online. Or drawing is just a hobby of theirs and they enjoy showing their friends what they've done.
I rarely update my art to the net, and when I do, I put them in private albums that strangers can't view.
But for those who don't, stealing is always a danger, and in some cases it's one they must risk. It's not fair, but since when has thieving ever been fair? It lies on the decency of others to respect what's not theirs, and for every internet user to approach this decency accordingly. I don't say don't upload art. I say quit stealing and using, you lazy micks. But how likely is that to happen...
