I'm going to write a fan-fiction based on Pokemon, staring a character I made up (named Elizabeth) and a character from the Diamond and Pearl Anime series called Nando. My problem is...I can't quite decide which Pokemon I should include in it for Elizabeth!

I've already decided that her main battle Pokemon are going to be a female Sneasel (her first Pokemon) and a female Garchomp named Garcha, but I'm unsure of the others. I've also decided that Elizabeth will have a Legendary Pokemon, but I'm not sure which one. Here's a list of legendaries that I'm considering:

Lugia

Mewtwo

Mew

Kyogre

Rayquaza

Deoxys

Latias

Latios

Giratina

Post any suggestions for the legendaries or other Pokemon that could be used on this thread! Thanks for your help!

PS: Here's the story plot...Elizabeth will meet Nando in the forest near Lake Valor, a day before the annual Lake Valor Pokemon Contest, which Elizabeth quickly finds out that they are BOTH entering, although for Elizabeth it is her first contest. Nando gives some tips to Elizabeth, and plays his harp for Elizabeth's Sneasel and the two part. The next morning, Elizabeth will sign up for the contest and bump into Nando again. Eventually, down to the finals, it is Elizabeth and Nando battling for the contest ribbon (a bit of a cliche, but heck...also, Elizabeth's Sneasel will evolve during this battle at some point). However, something goes disastrously wrong...Azelf, the Lake Valor guardian, arises and attacks everything around it, under the influence of an evil trainer's hypnosis. Although trainers try to stop it, they can't, and even Elizabeth's Sneasel is defeated, despite the type advantage it has. THAT is when Elizabeth reveals her legendary Pokemon...and you can guess how that part ends. There's some more of the story I haven't figured out yet...

I'd prefer suggestions to be of Pokemon NOT in Generation V, thanks.

None. :3

I think the idea of people giving their characters Legendary Pokemon is Sue-ish. I mean, what makes your character so extremely special as to just casually have a Pokemon that's on a level above all other Pokemon? Unless it's particularly related to the plot - like a time travel fic where the trainer has befriended Dialga/Celebi to do so, or I could imagine a dark fic of a trainer who's befriended Mewtwo and has to endure his struggles with him. Or even some sort of Reverse World fic with Giratina... but it makes for a boring adventure to have the God of the Reverse World on your side.

Note I've been saying befriended. Unlike in the games, Legendary Pokemon aren't meant to be caught. In the manga they sometimes are caught as a temporary thing, but the heroes always have to earn the respect of the Legendary Pokemon and only call on them for their aid in a dire situation. They don't just have them so they can pwn everything that moves. (Yes, Legendary Pokemon are supposed to be extremely powerful. The games undermine them so the player actually has a chance.)

How would your character even have this Legendary? They just do? No reason behind it once so ever other than the writer wants their character to be special? I'm not sure I'd bother reading a fic like that, and I'm sure there's others who share my opinion.

The fact that you're asking the question of which Legendary Pokemon your character should have suggests that they aren't related to the plot in any way. If they were a plot device, you'd have to have quite a few plots you're considering between, and I'm sure you would have mentioned that they were important to the plot and changed the plot in different ways.
