What you are about to read is terrible, sad, and heartwarming:
Maty, a good friend of mine whom I have known since kindergarten was just diagnosed with leukemia. She had been gone from school for the whole week after our district UIL meet (like a science fair but way cooler). We were all starting to worry, then on Friday our homeroom teacher told us the devastating news; Maty was in the hospital and was having a bone marrow transplant as we spoke. I had to hold back the tears, none of us could believe our ears. We made a big banner and signed it for her, we also sent her cards, candy, and a big teddy bear with all of the medals she had won at UIL draped around the neck (we got them Monday, and she wasn't there to receive them.) Her parents created a website where we can read updates on her illness, this is what she has written so far:
"Hey everyone, it's Maty. I haven't been doing well since December, when I had a very sudden fainting spell at the mall. After many doctor visits, it was finally decided that I had hypothyroidism. I had been taking synthroid for two months, but it didn't seem to work the way it should have been. At my last well- checkup on February 22nd, we discovered that my hemoglobin count was extremely low. We went to the hemotologist that Wednesday, and he admitted us to the hospital that afternoon. I still had no idea what was wrong.
Two days ago I was diagnosed with leukemia. Yesterday I started chemotherapy, which I am happy to say is doing its job well. I'm going to be in the hospital for approx. 28 days more, and then home for two more months. It's going to be a long and painful journey, and honestly, I'm not exactly looking forward to it. But here's what I am looking forward to: the many friends, family members, and wonderful people who will be helping me along this journey standing by me every minute. Thank you for praying, thank you for listening, thank you for loving, and thank you for standing by me through my journey. Most of all, thank you for being the reason for why I'll keep fighting."
~ :( Heartwarming right? Almost made me and some of my friends cry. Please, if you have a heart you'll pray for her and her family. Please keep her and her family in all of your prayers, donate to the cure and keep strong. Thank you RES!
NOTE: if you didn't already know, leukemia is cancer of the bones - it's where an individual's bone marrow cannot produce blood cells effectively enough. Chemo Therapy is the only known cure, and poor Maty will be taking it for the next month or so.
