You don't need to do things digitally. I'm personally frustrated with the fact that a lot of people think you need to know how to use a computer to make art in order to become a great artist. I myself, am a digital artist. It's helpful to know the skills, but not necessary. Please, don't feel pressured to use the computer. Go do what you like doing, not what you feel is popular. Feeling the need to use something just because everyone else does is a tad silly. Honestly, when I started doing digital art, I never knew anyone else used the computer to draw things (I was 11, I thought I was so clever!).
Anyways, I feel that you need to practice other things, not just draw a wall of eyes. I've seen countless people draw full A3 pages of just eyes, but when asked to draw an actual face, they don't know how to relate the eyes to other facial features. Don't take things one step at a time, it's a good way to base your practice, but not all aspects should revolve around this idea. You need to practice intelligently alright? Draw the whole face and you'll improve far faster than just practicing to render the eyes. If you can't do it on the comp yet, practice more with something you're more familiar with, like pencils.
Sorry for going off track with your thread. I just didn't really like your attitude towards drawing and art. I've known countless people who thought that way and never got anywhere. Go with your heart, not what's popular ;D
Also, never try doing commissions with something you're not comfortable with. It'll bite you in the bum. You need to draw according to what your customer wants, and it's not necessarily something that you can do easily. You've got to do it under a time frame, so it's best to play it safe aight? So do a pilot with the animals first and see how you'll cope.
