I kinda need help with some colour schemes for an animation project I'm doing. There are basically 4 major characters that need a strong design. These characters are ba[injection]sed on Chinese (and 1 Japanese) mythological beasts: a dragon, an ushioni (the spider kind), a qilin (for those used to hearing 'kirin', 'qilin' is the Chinese equivalent and also where the Japanese got the word 'Kirin' from. ALSO. IT IS NOT A FREAKING ASIAN UNICORN) and a lion dog thing (I don't know what it's called. Westerners call them 'fu/foo dogs' but I don't think that's right).

I only have the last one, the dog drawn out and coloured (I'm still playing around with the others design). This one was pretty straight forward to me as I wanted to ba[injection]se him on my dog, who is a shih tzu, also what the 'fu/foo dog' is originally ba[injection]sed on. Some are ba[injection]sed on the Pekinese by the way, but the 'original' one is ba[injection]sed on the shih tzu (hence, shih tzus are called 'lion dogs').
I'm making it seem more Southern Chinese and more buddhist as I don't know much about Northern Chinese design mind you.

I want to include green, magenta and gold in it for reasons too difficult for me to explain (I'm pretty bad at explaining in general mind you).

Does it look really gaudy or bad?
I need opinions. My mum says it's ugly, maybe because she just thinks my dog is ugly in general.

If you want to show me a better colour scheme, here's a lineart:

Just include green (preferrably dark green, no neon green) and magenta. Would it help if I told you he was supposed to represent a brick wall and the earth?

Also, the rope around the dog's neck is ba[injection]sed on the shimenawa from Shinto tradition (these are tied around rocks and trees and other things, hence it forms a better connection to the earth in my design). If you google it up, it's not too similar to it other than the fact it's braided. Should I make it more like a proper shimenawa? Please reply!

Also:

This is an ushioni. I want to make a character ba[injection]sed on it. BUT. I can't think of many design ideas due to my lack of immersement (never been to Japan. I just have a deep interest in Asian art) in Japanese art and culture.

Should I just make a complete ripoff of this design and draw it in my own style without any of my own input in the design? Can anyone give me ideas on what on earth I can do with this thing? He's supposed to look quite menacing and powerful, spinning a web into a cloud and floating in on scene.  I would show you guys the theme for this fellow to get a general idea of his character, but the composer doesn't want me to show anyone his site.

Just so you know. There isn't any real 'music'. The composer and I agreed that 'music' is a bit boring and structured everything using natural sounds. There aren't many instruments in there other than a few synthesized drones and a lion dance drum.

I also plan to release an animatic in two weeks time. So I think people can get a better picture of what I'm doing xD

fyi: Shishi lion is the correct term. Fu dog is a westernised term dear. I'll check up again when forums fixed. Mean time, post on tumblr too?

I think those colors are really pleasing to the eye, kind of muted but not too much. Also your style is so adorable ahhhh.
I can't help you with making a character though, since i can't create my own...
