So I downloaded SAI painter the other day and I must say it is fantastic. So much fun to use and simple too. I tested it out by doing a doodle and coloring it. Now, this is my first time ever coloring something digitally and I think I did pretty well...

However, I know it's not perfect and there are a few questions I have for the digital artists out there. Okay...

1.) The hair shines - I've looked at tutorials, observed countless DA artists and nothing really seems to answer my question. Are there certain rules to hair shines? Can I just shine anywhere? Is there a "right" way to shine it or is it all a matter of preference?

2.) The fabric - Being new to cel-shading and all, I shouldn't have made anything to complicatedbut I refused to let fabric folds stop me. Is there some kind of rule as to when to indicate folds using shading or actual lines? Should I only use shading to make wrinkles in the fabric?

If you notice anything else that seems to be off, please tell me. I will forever be in your debt. Cheers~! :3

I don't use SAI for cell shading. I use it to do paintings. So I can't help you with that. What do you mean when you say hair line? Seeing you are not doing a painting and you are using line art, this isn't a matter of digital art, this is about drawing in general isn't it? So you won't need a digital artist to help you. But I can't really tell you nuffin' 'bout hairlines, 'cause I'm not experienced in drawing humans. About the fabric, I'm gonna say that it really depends whether you want to display more detail with the shading or not. If you want to attempt to use the shading to display more detail, then use the shading. If you don't want to put so much detail in the shading, then use lineart.

Thanks for the tip on the fabric, I'll keep it in mind. cx

As for the hair part, I was talking about how the ligh hits the hair and makes it shine. Not how to draw the hair itself, but making it look like it's being hit by light. I called it a "shine" for lack of a better word. xDD -indicates awkward squiggly line on the hair-

I seemed to have mis-read it (I should stop skim reading). I say use your knowlegde on light, it's actually very hard to explain in my opinion

I love sai as well!I'm yet to find a program that gives lines so clean.

Okay, so I think that picture is adorable so far! I noticed a few things that could be improved, and a couple of things that I would have changed but are just a matter of taste. Because I'm really bad at explaining I just scribbled some notes ^^; I hope it helps anyway!
