I don't bother rubbin' my guidelines out either. When you first start using guidelines, you'll be slow. The more practice you get with them, the faster you will be able to draw them. I like using guidelines because I hate not knowing exactly what I'm doing. Many people just draw random lines that they think look correct. Using guidelines also helps get a better understanding of anatomy. Many proffessionals still use them, but you can stop using guidelines if you're very good (you'll get the anatomy stuck in your head). Anyways, the fastest way of doing anything isn't always the best way. The quality of the picture is what counts, not the speed in which you produce it.
You can get a demo of photoshop, but there's many good programs out there that isn't photoshop. Remember, photoshop was not made for drawing. It was only made for photo editing, but people still use it for drawing. I heard paint shop pro is really good (haven't tried it). I know paint tool SAI is very good, but I like using multiple softwares for my art.
