Chapter 7~
Danielle was the first to draw away from Aaron’s impulsive kiss, but she stayed within the safe, warm cage of his arms. As he tilted her head up so that she was looking at him, strands of doubt resurfaced. Could she really leave him? Danielle wondered if she could ever burn away the memories of his unruly brown hair and warm brown eyes. Now voicing her fears, she stepped back and slid down until she was on the bed.
“What now?” She asked simply.
“Well, we can’t stay here,” commented Aaron, sitting down beside her. As she leaned against his side, Danielle wondered if her emotions could have changed—rather foolishly at that--- with the force of one kiss. God, she was in for it this time. As Aaron shifted a little to accompany her weight, Danielle let a small sight leak.
“We’ll go to my cousin Kita’s,” murmured Aaron, as if to himself. Sitting up again, Danielle tilted her head.
“Who’s Kita?” she asked, feeling a little bit of worry drain away, then get replaced by more of a different sort. At least Aaron was trying to keep her safe. But who was this Kita? Why did they need to leave the hotel? A thousand questions ran through her, but she kept her mouth shut.
“Kita’s my cousin, a wolf shifter,” said Aaron after a long while. “We’ll be safe there, at least for a while.”
“What do you mean, ‘safe?’” asked Danielle cautiously as the worry niggled at her stomach. Where there more shifters like Aaron? Hideous, evil ones? In all her years, she had never wanted to truly accept that there would always be evil in the world. And right now seemed like a good time to do just that.
“Well, until you’re bonded, you’ll be a target by Silas Finche. But after you are, you should be safe.” Danielle didn’t miss the ‘should’ in his statement.
“Who’s Silas Finche?” Danielle asked.
Aaron stiffened visibly, not a very good sign. “Silas Finche is the worst of our kind. He was once a scientist, but has since turned for the worst. After discovering the secret to creating DNA that could enable you to take any form, he became, dangerous, ambitious. He is a danger to our race and yours.”
“Why?” Asked Danielle, almost relieved to hear that her voice held a hint of fear. She wasn’t quite ready to give that up yet, even though she had a hunch that bravery on her part would soon be needed.
“Silas Finche wants to take over the world, to put it bluntly. He thinks that the human race should have been hunted by our kind long ago.” Danielle stiffened. “If not being forced into extinction, he believes humans should be enslaved, or treated much like animals. Some,” Aaron smoothed away a stray strand from Danielle’s face, “Like you, would be used, solely to help our population grow in numbers, though the females of our race could do that. And yes,” Aaron answered the question on Danielle’s lips, “That would mean having offspring with human women like you.”
Danielle shook her head, blinking back a few small tears. How had her world turned upside down like this? Aaron had brought her into this, but if she was compatible with his type---wait, what did that mean?
“What do mean by ‘human women like me?’” Danielle asked.
Aaron tilted his head to one side, as if contemplating how to explain something to her. “Danielle, you are a very special human. You can breed with my species, and carry our young. Females of our race can do the same, but you are still very unique, nonetheless. Our race can sense theses women, and you are one of them.”
Danielle sighed and leaned back. Well, this was getting more complicated than she liked. But right now, she could only trust Aaron. The true question was, how to go from here?
