The door was open.

She could escape.

Not pausing to take anything from her tiny room, she dashed past the bars into the darkness beyond. This room was familiar; she’d seen it before, but by night the hulking shapes of furniture and branches rustling against the window gave it a distinctly eerie feel. Shuddering, she continued into the room beyond. The hallway seemed endless, every step taking her no further. Eventually, she reached the door. She breathed in, braced herself, and stepped into the world beyond.

It was huge! The sky, sparkling like it was sewn with diamonds, was simultaneously millions of miles away and close enough to touch. She slowed to a walk, marvelling at the world she’d never seen. Dewy plants made a rainforest, rubbish bins were mountains in the tarry plains. She remembered her purpose and started scurrying faster, but every glimpse of this new world filled her with joy.

Some time later, the joy had faded. She was lost, and her little room was all she had ever known – she had nowhere to go. She sat down on the edge of the pavement and cried, for she had realized something.

She had fallen in love with the ones who had imprisoned her. What was freedom if it was running away from those that you cared about? She dried her eyes and turned around. She was going home.

Retracing her trail was easy – it was almost as if she had known she was going to turn back. Through the streets, past the cars… and back to the door. She took one last look at the night sky, and then stepped through the door.

Annabel the guinea pig returned to her cage, home again.

I've had to go on a unplanned hiatus and will not be able to get on much, if at all. I apologise for any inconvenience this causes you! If you really need to contact me, I may respond to rmails.
