The first thing I was aware of was that I was drowning. I was drowning in deep, dark water. I kicked and fought to get to the surface...only I wasn't kicking my legs, I was kicking with my TAIL. I was confused. Me...a HUMAN...with a TAIL?! But was I human any more? I swam right towards the surface like a rocket. I had only so much breath left...

...instead of stopping when I reached the surface, I shot right through it like a rocket. I breached and felt the air all around me. I took the oppertunity to breathe...and THAT'S when I really panicked.

For when I had taken a breath, I realised that I had not breathed through my mouth or nose...but through the BACK OF MY HEAD. As I splashed back down into the water, a million questions wizzed through my head; what's happening to me? Where are my legs? How come I'm breathing through the back of my head? What have I become? I surfaced again, to confused to do much else. But that's when I heard the shouts of the many people on the pier.

"Look! Look! It's a...black dolphin!" One man shouted.

"No, Daddy, it's a False Killer Whale." his daughter corrected him.

"I can't see Lucy ANYWHERE!" several people screeched above all the other voices. But surely they could see me...Lucy was MY name. And a False Killer Whale? What was all this nonsense? But then I heard a woman's mournful cry rise high above the shouts of others.

"I saw her!" she wailed. "I saw her fall off the pier...she's DROWNED! I just know it! Lucy's DEAD!"

Mother... I tried to say, but I could not speak the way I used to; all that came out was a seemingly random series of clicks and whistles that baffled even me. Mother...I'm right here!

But it was no use...mother didn't hear me. How could she? At that point, I think i would have cried if I could. It all dawned on me...but none of it made any sense at all. It was IMPOSSIBLE...how could I drown and come back to life? How could I come back to life as a False Killer Whale? And just WHY DID IT HAPPEN?

I couldn't cope. This was all so confusing and sad. I simply couldn't bare it any longer. So I slipped beneath the waves once more. I was almost tempted to never surface for breath again and let my life be taken by the waves once more. But I eventually ignored that thought. After all, I HAD already died once today. So I simply swam away as fast as my new tail fluke would allow me. I had absolutely no intention of stopping for anyone or anything. I hadn't the faintest idea what I was going to or where I would go, but I did know that I'd never go back there again...

...not ever...

...never.

I lost track of time. It must be at least 3 days after IT happened. Still, things could be worse.

I've gotten used to the breathing thing...although breathing through the back of my head still feels a little weird. And the tail...well, my tail's like a replacement for my legs. Much more efficient for swimming, I might add. And I suppose I'll never need my legs again...

I only have one problem now. I'm absolutely STARVING! I'm FAMISHED! I need food! But what does a False Killer Whale eat? Then it dawned on me. The thing I need is FISH! Fish, fish, fish! Dolphins and whales eat fish! 

Finally... I thought. I have an excuse to eat sushi...sort of.

Back when I was a human, I used to adore the taste of sushi. It was my number one favourite food! And I suppose this couldn't be too different, right?

But where to find fish? I thought to myself. And THAT'S when it happened. It's almost liked the creature instincts kicked in. I suddenly let out a flurry of clicking noises that seemed to echo all around me. At first, they made no sense...but then a picture came back to me...a shoal of small fish, right below me. Almost without thinking, I went to the surface to take a breath and dived. As I swam deeper and deeper, I saw something huge moving right in front of me. But as I swam closer, I realized that it wasn't just one animal...it was hundreds of tiny ones. It was the shoal of fish.

That  must have been echolocation...the system dolphins use to find prey. 

I charged into the middle of the shoal, mouth open. I caught one of the shiny fish, and swallowed it whole. Oh, how delicious it was! It was more wonderful than any other things I had tasted. So I circled around and swam through the shoal once more, the fish darting out of the way. but they were no match for me, and soon the shoal had greatly decreased in number. But just when I was really getting the hang of hunting...a huge creature shot past me like a bullet. Then came another. And then another.

What the......? I gave a few alarmed clicks and squeaks. One of the shapes swam up to me and snapped at me in an angry tone of voice.

Who are you? Which pod do you belong to? Go away!

It was another False Killer Whale...and it had brought many others with it.

Oh dear. I hope they're friendly!

I know false killer whales eat mostly fish and squid, but sometimes they eat dolphin too. How would Lucy feel about that?

And about the eating dolphin thing...I think that later on, she'll come across a baby dolphin, and the False Killer Whale part of her wants to kill it, but her human side wants to spare it. I think that'll be quite dramatic.

And by the way...do you have any suggestions for a name for the False Killer Whale that just talked to her? I can't think of any good ones...apart from Scar.

I think that the other False Killer Whale will be called Cassius, another will be called Adolphus, and later there'll be an evil Orca (or Great White Shark) called Brutus. ^_^

Suddenly another False Killer Whale gave a sharp whistle and swam over. This one was almost twice the size of either myself or this newcomer. He also had a long, jagged scar over his face.

Cassius! Who is this? he barked at the one who had spoken to me. He glanced over to me with an angry glare. If I was a human, I would have shivered.

A 'podless', Adolphus, sir. The individual apparently named Cassius said. She was hunting before we got here, I assume. He turned to me. That's right, isn't it?

Yes, sirs. I said. Adolphus gave a sudden burst of fierce clicking that scared me.
