Sorren's eyelids drooped, and slowly shut. Her head started to go limp as started leaning to one side. Suddenly her head smacked into the window and she jumped up, startled. She was tired. Extremely tired. The night before, she had thrown a party and decided to try and pull an all-nighter. She ended up falling asleep at two am. Now, she regretted it, and was miserable with sleep. Someone twirled their finger around a lock of her hair. As she was about to turn around, they yanked it.
“Clint!” Sorren exclaimed. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
“Woken up yet, Sorr?” Asked her thirteen year old brother smugly.
“Stuff off.” She mumbled as she rested her head against the window gl*censored*.
“We’re nearly at school!” Exclaimed Ember, her six year old sister. “Your still sleepy! Mummy told you not to stay up too late!”
“Shut up, Ember.” Growled Sorren.
“Mummy! Sorren told me to shut up!” Ember pouted.
Sorren’s mum twisted around, to see what was going on in the back.
“If you kids don’t get along soon, I’ll-”
“Mum! Watch the road!” Sorren screamed.
Their car was spinning out of control. Ember started squealing, terrified, while Sorren curled up in a ball, too shocked to move, let alone scream. Clint had fainted. Sorren’s mum was rapidly trying to gain control of the steering wheel and was forced backwards, at the speed. Ember vomited and continued screaming while the car went in it’s own direction. Sorren then reached out and tried to grab the steering wheel but was thrown back into her seat as they went over a rock. This couldn’t be happening. They were all bouncing up and down in their seats, as they went off the road, down the hill, and into the desert, which surrounded their town. The car flipped upside down and went back the right side. It rolled for a while, then a smash bigger than the rest sounded out. The windscreen, at that point, was already shattered, so a branch had no trouble ground through it. That was the end of the crash. Sorren suddenly realized the m*censored*ive pain in her neck and tried to look down. She managed to see that the seat belt had dug into the bottom of her neck and was embedded in it. Her eyes widened as blood flowed rapidly out of the start of her chest. She took a deep breath and took hold of the seat belt. Then she gave a huge yank and screamed in agony as seat belt slid quickly out of her neck. Then she looked at Ember. Her poor six year old sister would have been in so much shock, after all, she was so young. Ember’s eyes were closed and she looked pale.
“Ember? Are you okay?” Asked Sorren slowly.
Ember’s eyes flew open and she began squealing again. Sorren hugged Ember and tried to comfort her.
“It’s okay, everything’s ok. The crash is over.” She told Ember.
Ember sobbed and then coughed up some blood. She looked at her blood, clearly horrified.
“Emby...” Sorren trailed off.
She kissed her little sister’s forehead and got up. She couldn’t do this. She was no mum. How would she be able to look after Ember now? She started walking without realizing it. When she saw that she was moving forward, she didn’t bother stopping.
“Sorren, Sorren!” She heard her little sister’s cries getting further and further away, until they stopped. She heard little foot steps behind her, but didn’t look back. Ember appeared at her side and tugged her shirt.
“Sorren, we have to go back!” Ember whimpered.
Sorren whirled around, fury gleaming in her eyes.
“I don’t have to do anything!” She yelled. “Our family is dead, Ember! There’s no point in living anymore!”
With that she carried on walking, as guilt clawed at her belly at the sound of Ember quietly crying behind her. Sorren’s feet started to burn as she walked through the hot desert ground. Then she started thinking properly again.
“What the hell am I doing?” She yelled, to nobody in particular. She turned around and there was no road in sight. Had she really been walking for that long? She felt a little hand slide into hers and she looked down. Ember was staring up at her with big blue eyes.
“Ember... I’m sorry.” Sorren stroked Ember’s tear stained cheek and looked around. They were in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothingness. This couldn’t be happening. They had just been in a car accident, their family was dead, and now they were lost in the desert? They may as well just be dead.
