I felt the sun shining down on my pure white coat, reflecting off into the eyes of my enemy. My ears flat against my head, listening intently. My paws, still as could be, feeling the trampled flowers beneath me. My eyes closed, anticipating the coming attack. I waited like this for hours. I knew he was coming, planning as he went. I heard a snap of a twig at the edge of the meadow, and a quiet kick off the ground, soil hitting the trees in the distance. One, Two, Three…. I thought. Then, I jumped up, and landed about a foot from where I had been previously. Landing with a thud, Kineer fell to the ground. With another leap, I landed on top of him, making him look into my eyes and growling at him.
“So, how did I mess up this time, Jazz?” He asked me. We both broke into a laugh as I let him up.
“In every way possible, as usual!” I told him, still laughing. “But, it was better than last time….” I said grinning.
“Don’t remind me.” He said frowning. I heard a faint howl.
“Did you hear that?” I asked Kineer.
“No…. What was it?” He asked.
“I don’t know. It sounded like Travis. We better get back to the pack.” I said, already walking towards the trees that lined the meadow.
“Right behind you!” Kineer said, running to catch up with me. I heard it again.
“Come on Kineer!” I said as I started running towards the trees. We both ran side by side through the trees, weaving our way to the caverns. I saw Travis as the cavern’s entrance.
“Travis, what is going on? Where is Markos? Where is---“ I said.
“Jazz, Jazz, settle down. Everything is going to be all right…. Everything is going to be all right….” He reassured me.
“No, nothing is going to be all right until you tell her what is wrong!” Kineer snapped at him. rn“Kineer, stop. Travis, where is my father?” I asked him. He looked down at his paws. “No, no…..” I whispered. “Travis, it can’t be!” He looked up at me and slowly nodded. rn“Jazz, what happened?” Kineer asked, looking worried.
“Father….Gorgon…..” I stuttered.
“Jazz, Jazz, it’s gonna be okay. It’s gonna be okay…” Kineer told me. I told myself I needed to gather strength. I ran into the caverns and into the room my father and I called ours. I jumped up onto the rock pile where I slept. I laid down and started to howl in agony. Kineer must have sensed that I needed comforting seeing as he followed me to my room. He sat down at the entrance and waited for permission to enter. Seeing that he would never get a peep out of me, he slowly walked in, head to the ground, tail between his legs. He walked up to me like this, only lifting his head to climb. He nudged my head with his, trying to comfort me.
“Jazz, he will be fine.” He whispered to me. I felt the fire building up in me.
“No Kineer, he won’t! I should have known! They have been all over these parts for the past month! You know what they will do to him! They’ll… They’ll…” I faltered, starting to cry.
“It’s okay, Jazz, it’s okay.” He said. We lay side by side for a minute. “Jazz? Can you look at me?” He asked. I looked at him, water clouding my vision. “There. Much better. Would you be okay if I left for a minute?” He asked, looking worried.
“Y… Yes, I’ll be okay.” I answered him. He got up, and walked away. I heard the voice of Travis asking something, I closed my eyes, and everything went black.

I woke to the smell of a Diike nearby.
“I think she is awake! Go get the pack ready!” I heard Kineer whisper to someone. I then heard soft paws walk past my room’s entrance.
“Get them ready for what?” I asked sitting up.
“Oh, um… Morning Jazz!” Kineer said trying to cover something up.
“Morning Kineer. Now get them ready for what?” I asked, persistent.
“What nonsense are you talking about?” He asked, feebly trying to cover up whatever they were doing.
“Never mind. Anyways, what are you doing in my room?” I asked him, getting ready to leap for his throat. “You know it is forbidden…”
“Don’t you remember?” He said tensely.
“Oh, ya. Sorry…” I said, relaxing my stance. “Well, I smell breakfast, so I gotta run.” I climbed down the rocks, and left the room. “Kineer?” I asked.
“Ya?” He replied.
“Thanks… For everything.” I told him.
