CHAPTER ONE
A ginger cat darted between the boulders. His eyes flashed like amber, and his fur burned like flames. A silver-furred she-cat watched him from her shelter underneath a holly bush. Her eyes glowed like blue ice as she watched him leap over the rocks. Drops of water began to fall from the purple sky, and the ginger cat ran for shelter. Of course, thought the silver-furred cat. He doesn’t want to weaken himself.
The ginger cat’s eyes dimmed to a weak hazel colour as the rain pelted his fiery fur. He finally seeked refuge under the same holly bush as the silver-furred cat. The ginger cat gazed out into the pouring rain, his once burning fur now looking just like any other ginger cat’s fur. The silver-furred cat realised what he was. He’s a power cat…of fire!
The silver-furred cat cleared her throat. The fire cat jumped, turning his hazel eyes on her. He hissed in surprised anger, backing slowly out of the holly bush. “Don’t go back out there, idiot! You’ll just weaken your abilities more!” The silver-furred cat growled.
The fire cat looked curiously at her. “Why are you sheltering when this rain will strengthen your abilities, water cat?” He snarled.
The silver-furred cat sighed. “I am already strong enough, fire cat. I have got enough power to supply me. I don’t want to give away my position whenever I look into somecat’s eyes.”
The fire cat thought for a moment. Then he sat up and held out a paw. “I am Veraz, and my power is to set anything on fire.”
The silver-furred cat dipped her head, and placed her paw on Veraz’s. “I am Dapple, and my power is to control the water around me however I please.”
Veraz dipped his head back, setting down his paw. He crouched down and focused on a small dead leaf. Dapple watched as he tested his strength on it. It began to smoke, but wouldn’t burn. Veraz sighed wearily. “Well, I’m going to rest here, I’d may as well.”
He pointed with his nose to the pelting rain. Dapple nodded. “Do you mind if I travel with you?” She meowed.
Veraz, busy scraping a moss nest together, looked up. “Sure, if you want to.” He mumbled back.
Dapple helped Veraz pull together a nest big enough for both of them, then dapple used ferns to create a roof to shelter them from any drips of water from the holly leaves. When the bedding was ready, Dapple hopped up. “I’ll be right back.” She meowed.
And before Veraz could even say anything, she was pushing her way through the holly leaves.
Dapple finally escaped the last of the holly thorns and danced away to a mossy oak, where a fat little mouse was nibbling on a blade of applegrass. Dapple licked her lips…and pounced.
The mouse’s squeal was cut short by Dapple’s sharp claws. She buried the mouse by the tree and carried on. She caught a rabbit two blackbirds and a vole as well as the mouse and took them back to the holly bush.
Veraz looked up as she entered. His eyes widened when he saw Dapple’s catch. “Wow! Nice catch!” He meowed in amazement.
Dapple ducked her head. “It’s nothing.”
“No, it’s not. That was fast!”
Dapple nudged the blackbirds and the vole over to Veraz. “What’s mine is yours.” She purred, tucking into the rabbit.
“Thanks, I’m ravenous.” Veraz mumbled over a mouthful of feathers.
After their meal, Dapple was content and full. She rolled into her bed beside Veraz. “G’nite.” Veraz grumbled sleepily. “Night.” Dapple whispered back, and she fell into the deep, black silence of sleep.
