Depressing literature, AKA sick verse for poetry, goth rock and the like for songs, and horror flicks/shorts for movies/stories. All of them are exceedingly common in the fact that they have, for lack of a better word, an extremely large 'fanbase'.
But the question remains:
Why do so many people (teens especially) write nothing but depressing literature and topics?
In this post, I will posit a psychological theory on this question. So, without further ado, Theory on Depressing Literature.
Theory: It's all they know
The world is a depressing, scary place. There's murder, suicide, bullying to the POINT of suicide, war, famine, natural disasters, the list goes on. It's almost no wonder why so many teens and young adults write nothing but sick verse and horror shorts. It's all they've ever seen in the world they live in.
Gone are the days that people will let their toddlers play outside after dark, gone are the days that war was just a small 'maybe', not the biggest media coverage. Let's face it: In the last century, more and more terrifying things have happened: World War I and II, The Iraq War, The Vietnam. Then there's the possible wars: The impending Nuclear War, the threat of Global Warming, The hole in the Ozone.
It's scary to think that these factors may have such an adverse effect on teenagers.
