Based on a true story.
Short Friendship
It had started and ended that day.
Not your average human-human friendship.
But one of a human-bird one.
It had been a long day of school. I flung my bag onto the sofa and Mom said,
"Guess what's in the garden, dear,"
I ran out. And guess what was waiting for me?
A small.Bald.Baby. Bird.
It was love at first sight and the little thing chirped. It opened its beak and cried. I got a dropper and fed it water. Then , as it's nest was on the roof, I left the baby in a styrofoam bowl under the nest.
But it's mother had not come. I researched that birds abandoning the babies due to human scent was a myth. I fed the baby again. It was the happiest day of my life.
Five Hours Later
I went out to feed the bird again. Somehow the baby felt cold. I moved the 'nest' to a place shady. But the baby did not move as it will do when disturbed.
Then it hit me. The baby was dead.
I cried hysterically that night. I said a silent prayer hoping the baby will not blame me.
Then I buried it. Near it's nest. And on it's grave I engraved,
Short Friendship between Me and Songbird.
Friendship is short but precious. Treasure every second of it.
