                        Prologue

I’d give anything to give me to you

Can you forget the world that you thought you knew?

-          Evanescence, “Anything For You”

I’d never known I was different until that night.

I mean, yeah, I knew that I was different, but the question to me was, How?

I didn’t know that there was another world parallel to mine. I didn’t even know that I belonged to it. I didn’t know what I was, what I would be.

But that all changed the night I met Lilith, Cinder, Sargon, and Hellfire.

It started an eternity of nights, with no dawn to break any gaps.

Welcome to my hell.

Welcome to the Underworld.

                                                  Chapter One

Fear is only in our minds

Taking over all the time

Fear is only in our minds

But it’s taking over all the time

- Evanescence, “Sweet Sacrifice”

There’s nothing to be afraid of… Nothing to be afraid of…

The words bounced around my skull as I hurried down the dark street to my foster home. The Lee’s were my latest foster parents. I usually get kicked out of a foster home after one or two months, meaning I can’t get too attached to anything while I’m there. And, as always, I prevail. My breath fogged in the winter air as I quickly ran the last few meters and up the three stairs to the porch.

My current foster home is nonde, with white-washed brick walls and a slate grey roof. “I’m back!” I yelled as the screen door slammed behind me.

“Kathryn. How was the movie?” Roger Lee, my current foster father, is kneeled on the hearth, trying to light a fire in the grate. Two wooden logs suffocate in the smoke from his failed attempts.

“Eh.” I shrugged one shoulder. “It was alright.”

Roger stood up. The flames finally caught. Within seconds, the entire room heated up several degrees. “Go get washed up,” he said, a smile playing on his lips. “We need to talk.”

Oh, Goddess. I sent a quick prayer up to Isis, the Egyptian goddess of life. Please don’t let it be anything embarr*censored*ing. After rolling my eyes at him and grinning, I ran up the stairs and nearly tripped at the top. “Hurry!” Roger yelled after me. Slamming the door to my room and bolting it shut, I quickly peeled off my clothes and got in the shower. Steaming hot water blasted down onto my bare skin, making me gasp. I rubbed my skin red with the force of my scrubbing.

Layla…

The name wasn’t mine, but it still seemed to make my heart beat faster with the urge to answer it the voice.

Layla…

Oh. My. Goddess. There’s someone outside the shower curtain. I could distinctly see a person through the shower curtain. I knew it couldn’t have been anything else, because the only other things in the bathroom were a toilet, mirror, and sink.

Layla…

I quietly edged to one side of the shower. I pulled the curtain back quickly, certain that I had caught the culprit.

There was no one there.

“Huh?” I wondered out loud. “But I was sure there was someone…” I shook my head and turned around. There, face not three inches from my own, was a blonde-headed girl with startling green eyes and tan skin. She was dressed in a brown T-shirt and light blue denim jeans. And… She had wings. Black wings, about sixteen feet in length. The water from the showerhead seemed to p*censored* right through her body. The girl grinned at me, showing bright white teeth, before disappearing. There was no smoke, no clap of thunder, just nothing. One second she was there, the next… not.

I grabbed the shower rack as a wave of vertigo overcame me. “I’m going insane,” I whispered to myself. “Totally, completely insane.”

  Chapter Two

 Though I’ve tried to forget

You’re all that I am

Take me home

I’m through fighting it

- Evanescence, “October”

After a few minutes, I turned off the water. I grabbed the towel off of my towel rack and began to dry off. I caught my gaze in the mirror. My pale grey eyes looked haunted, confused. And I didn’t blame them.

Wrapping the towel around myself, I walked into my room to pick out some pajamas. My favorites were a skull-and-crossbones tee and some fuzzy black pants with wolves on them. I’d always been fascinated by the supernatural. Kasey, the youngest Lee daughter, who was about four, always said that I was a vampire in disguise. With a small smile to myself, I headed down the stairs.

Erin, who was my age – fifteen – tossed a brush to me as I hit the landing. “Comb out your hair,” she said, grinning. I’d always gotten along more with Erin than anyone else in the family. “Thanks,” I replied, grinning back, my nerves calming instantly. The girl was a dream, that's all. Just a dream.

“Kathryn! Dinner’s ready!” came Mrs. Lee’s voice.

“Coming, Mrs. Lee!” I called back.

Sophia, the Lee’s twelve-year-old daughter, tugged on my hand. “Sit next to me, Kathy,” she said, her blue eyes filled with innocent happiness.

I laughed. “Alright, alright. Keep your pants on.”

I followed Sophia and Erin into the kitchen, where Mrs. Lee was setting the table. The scent of spaghetti-and-meatballs wafted through the air. “Smells good,” I said. “My compliments to the cook.”

Mrs. Lee smiled at me. “You can say that after you eat it,” she said.

“Kathryn…!” Sophia wailed.

“Hey, calm down, kiddo,” I said soothingly. “I’m just right here.” I sat down next to her, and she placed a somewhat sticky kiss on my cheek.

Within seconds, Roger came in from the living room, carrying Kasey. She crooned happily as he placed her in her high-chair.

Mrs. Lee placed a portion of the food on everyone’s plate. “Dig in,” she said. We’d all polished our plates in a matter of minutes, with me coming in first place. I’ve always had an extremely fast metabolism.

Roger cleared his throat, as if to make an announcement. My heart rose into my throat and got stuck there. “Kathy,” he said in a calm voice. I could barely hear him over the sound of my heart beating in my ears. “You know that we care for you, right?” I swallowed hard and nodded. “And you care for us?” My head was telling me to answer “no”, but my heart told me to answer “yes”. I nodded again. “Good.

“Because we’d like to adopt you.”
