Chapter One

I walked up to the stage at the front of the auditorium, her pale eyes watching me. Why had she chosen now, when I needed her the most, to abandon me?

Well, for her humanoid self to abandon me.

I look away as I walk the three steps from the orchestra pit to the top of the stage, her eyes taking in my every move, my every motion. Time started to move slowly then, as if I were taking each step a hundred times slower than I usually did. I looked back at her eyes, she was staring straight at me. I questioned her with my eyes, but she gave no reply.

When I finally mad it to the podium, and stuttered over the typical introductory, my mind broke from its temporary lethargy. I took a deep breath and began.

"Since he dawn of time, man has always been afraid of the unknown," I began, nervously picking at my black nail polish. "Especially the dark. And through the dark, we have created mythical beasts and legendary monsters to explain the various bumps and creaks we hear during it," I looked up and faced every student at Creventure High's confused and amused expressions.

Accept some of them aren't so mythical and legendary, she said in my head.

I gasped a little, but continued on without showing it. I swallowed.

"Contrary to the popular belief, there is no such thing as a vampire or a wherewolf, or a shape-shifter. they just are not real!"

At this point every kid in the room either started laughing or bickering about Edward or Jacob. But I wasn't listening to them, i was listening to her in my head.

"Are you quite sure about that Glena?" she asked me telepathically.

I didn't know how to talk via brain waves, but I knew the look in my eyes was enough to tell her I was dead certain.

"Alright," she reproached. "But just how would you explain this?"

I gave her a confused look and she motioned towards the crowd of people. I hadn't noticed that they'd stopped fighting. In fact, they seemed to have come to a complete standstill. One kid's fist was still in a punching position. Then, it hit me.

They were all staring at the same thing. So i turned my head towards it, and-

Beep. Beep. Beep.

I awoke instantly in the knot of comforter I had tied myself in. I sighed and got out of bed, pressing the OFF button on my black clock. 

"Melinda, are you up yet?" called my foster mom, Agatha.

"yeah, yeah. I'm up," I replied bitterly as I made my way to the overly- bright, very obnoxious, yellow bathroom. I turned on the hot water and climbed in, trying to forget all of the stupid nightmares I've been having latley.

Who was that girl anyway? I had never seen her in my entire life! And those cold, pale eyes. Way creepy.

I stayed there until I decided it had been long enough, and dried off. I got dressed in whatever i could find, and made my way downstairs.

I half expected my mother to be there, to hug me and tell me what a good girl i was. To tell me what she had packed me for lunch and to ask what i wanted for breakfast. Instead, I'm greeted by a bitter,"Well it took you long enough!"

I roll my eyes and get out a couple of strawberries from the fridge. Living with someone for two years is still not long enough to get used to them.

"Don't you give me that attitude, you hear me?" she asked in her I'm-so-much-better-than-you tone.

"Yeah, yeah," I reply as I push out the door.

"Hey, don't come home with a bad grade again or Hank'll kill you!" she yelled in her ever-drunken way.

"You have a good day too!" I yell back at her as I slam the door shut behind me, and meet the cool, autumn air.
