When the Rose Blooms on my Grave

Prologue

She sat in the rain. It's icy touch going unnoticed as she stared at the grave that lay beneath her paws. Tears flowed down her face, blending in with the rain. She lifted her paw and placed it on the gravestone. " No more....." She whispered. When she drew her paw away, a blood red paw print was left behind. Beneath the paw print, a saying was written.

"How can you sing, when you have no voice?
How can you cry, when your tears are all dried up?
I'll always be there, teaching you how to sing.
I'll always be there, crying for you."
~Riun

With that she sealed her heart. Without a second glance at the stone, she turned away. And as she walked away, she realized that she had not just left her mate behind, but a piece of her heart as well.

Chapter 1

She stared down into the water. Her own reflection stared back up at her. She dipped a claw in the water and her reflection rippled. Suddenly, she was no longer looking at herself, but her mother. Her glistening silver fur with a mixture of black blending in. Her cerulean eyes as brilliant as ever. The three small scars below her left eye, hidden by the black and silver fur on her beautiful muzzle. She lifted her lip in a silent snarl and she swiped her paw at the reflection. She looked away from the water, her eyes closed tightly shut, tears brimming at the edge of her eyes. She looked up into the clear blue sky. "Why mother? Why did you leave me?" She whispered. She stood up and she began to trot away from the pond. She looked over her shoulder at the pond one last time. A misty orange light hung over it from the sun that was barely visible through the green leafy canopies. Dragonflies and Nat's swarmed around the pond. She sighed. Her mother, when she was younger, had brought her here. She closed her eyes as the memory resurfaced once again.
"Look into the water Cyri. What do you see? " My mother asked, her soft voice sounding like the leaves rustling softly in the trees. I stared into the water. "I see me." I answered, my voice sounding slightly disappointed. "That's right. One day, when I am no longer here, you will see not just you, but who you truly are." She whispered, wrapping her bushy tail around me. I laughed. "You'll never leave me. And I'll never leave you. Right mother?" I asked, staring up at her with big eyes. My mother stared sadly at me for a few seconds before smiling. She looked into the water herself. "Cyri, there will come a time, when I will no longer be with you. When that time comes though, I need you to be strong for me. Promise me that." She said, softly that I had to strain my ears to hear her. She turned back to me. Her eyes were glistening. "Promise me that." She whispered. I stared at her for a few seconds before smiling. "I promise mother. I promise." My mother smiled. " Good." She nuzzled me. "I love you mother." I whispered, burying my muzzle in her warm fur. "I love you too." My mother answered, her voice slightly rough.
She opened her eyes and wiped the tears off her face. She cleared her throat and she continued walking. Soon, she came to the forest's edge. Without looking back, she walked into the musky woods and disappeared into the shadows.

She weaved through the trees, her padded paws making no sound. She kept at a swift trot, not wanting to slow. She looked up and she saw a raven in front of her. She smiled. "Hello friend. Are you here to lead me to food?" She whispered. The raven cawed. "I take that as a yes." Even as she said, she caught the faintest smell of freshly killed elk in the breeze. Her mouth began to water. Her swift trot switched to a run. The wind smoothed past her, gently ruffling her fur, carrying the scent of the meat to her nose. The whispers of the leaves behind her. The trees swaying slightly in the spring breeze.  Suddenly, the trees cleared and she slowed to a walk as she entered a large clearing. She sniffed the air, and sure enough, the raven landed a few feet ahead of her and she heard tearing noises. She perked her ears up and caustiously walked towards the sound. She came upon a dead elk, it's side ripped open to reveal warm flesh and salty blood. She licked her lips. She parted her mouth to start eating when she caught another scent. She went rigid and her neck fur bristled. She sniffed the air again and sure enough, the scent was their. Wolf. It wasn't fresh, a few days old, but fresh enough to let her now that the wolf had been here numerous times. She looked around a few times with cautious eyes before she descended on the meat. Suddenly, she heard a growl behind her and before she could lift her head to see who it was, she felt someone tackle. She snarled and lashed out blindly searching for some flesh to sink her teeth in. When she found a leg, she bit down hard. The thing yelped and jumped off her. She lost her grip and she stood up quickly and faced her attacker, snarling and her fur bristling. She froze. Her attacker was a male wolf. His eyes were a shocking gold. They bore inter her eyes. His fur was a variety of brown, white, and black. His muscular form caught her by slight surprise. He was probably the same age as she was. He snarled at her. "That's my kill. Did you not smell my scent?" He growled.
