If the rule is going to be strictly 30 minutes, let's do it properly.
It's unreasonable to ask mods to know every user's ad history to the exact minute.
It's also ridiculously strict to ask a casual user to have a separate timer on their browser/machine just so they don't over-advertise on a pet site.

Suggestion:

Add in a drop-down option to make an "advertisement" post on the shoutbox.
Put it on a 30 minute timer so you can only use it as per the rules.
Have it a subtly different colour to the rest of the chat (maybe grey so it doesn't disturb the flow but it's noticable.)

Easy. The users can't go wrong. The staff can't go wrong. It isn't intrusive. Everyone is happy.

This has actually been suggested before but I still support it.

I want to clarify that it isn't unreasonable for mods because it's not difficult.
The messages in their chats are time stamped so they know the exact timings.
Furthermore, staff are able to view chat histories for up to a week or so?
So it's really not that hard to Ctrl + F a username to check for ads. :0

The foremost reason I suggested this is because systems should be in place that prevent people from being able to break the rules in the first place; instead of waiting for them to do it and issuing unnecessary warnings.

As Salt said, it's not all that difficult.

But I support because there have been a lot of times where it's different for every user which is unfair. So with this it would be kind of an all or nothing thing instead of a one person thing. Whatever makes it easier for no future problems and misunderstandings.

I support this, or rather, the theory of it.

Unfortunately people will frequently ignore the fact that there is an "Ad" option for the shoutbox and advertise through regular text anyway, or they won't think certain things don't count as ads (for example, asking if someone wants a free pet).

So we'd still have to punish for those. It really wouldn't make much difference if you ask me. Regardless there is something to monitor and give warnings for.

If there is a way to prevent THAT, then sure! That'd be wonderful and I give full support c:

Dusty, the point is that the mods would enforce that advertisements are not allowed in any other form than the ad chat. It'd be a different colour so you could tell.

So you would still have to warn, but you wouldn't have to work out how long ago they advertised, and neither would they. They'd just be breaking the one, solid, black-and-white rule, if you see what I mean.

True! That'd make life tons easier. My notepad is overflowing right now trying to keep up with the times for all these ads. xD
Like you said, preventative measures are better than punishment. Support. <3

Now what your saying is nice in theory don't get me wrong but substituting one rule for another ie warning people for not using a specific advert box or text colour may not be an ideal solution and at times, come across as stricter than the over advertising itself. Out of that and the over advertising the latter I would find significantly more disruptive. So I am not convinced and if this went forward I think it would need a trial period.

Strictness doesn't really come into this - all this would do is make it so that people couldn't over-advertise at all and they'd have a built-in timer to do the recording for them. If this comes across as strict, that's a problem with the rule, I think?

It doesn't change the strictness at all, to be honest, it's still the same rule but taking out the mistakes and favuoritism of mods and users. :)

"Please use ad chat for adverts! :) thanks"

Doesn't seem too strict to me? Feel free anyone, to correct me if I'm wrong here.

This suggestion comes from another site that I play that uses the same method and it works extremely well there. Everyone just knows to use that chat channel for ads and it keeps regular chatting uncluttered since you know to skip over the other colours.
