Many users visit Res because of the SB. Shutting down the very thing that prevented Res from failing within the first year like most other petsites would be a huge mistake.

I agree with Ping. If you would loosen up a bit you'd see that it's quite entertaining seeing users blabber in the shoutbox. It's not hard to conduct conversations even with these users. And most Rescreatu users have an instant messager that they use to communicate with other users. Why not use this is if you are so annoyed with other users? Trolls still barely disrupt gameplay.

As Ping said, an annoying user will still make a scene in the shoutbox two weeks later if you make them temporarily banned. They won't suddenly make "intelligent" posts because we didn't let them post at all in their first weeks on the site.

The feature that someone suggested earlier about having a little report button next to the username or something of the sort is a fantastic idea. Patrick or another of the programmers could build something as such so that when you report, it is sent to staff and there is a page where you can view all the shoutbox posts a user has made. I'm sure it would be very useful.

There won't always be a help blog listed in the most recent ten and they certainly won't spend half an hour searching for a single newbie blog. The shoutbox is their way of asking for help on matters they don't understand.

Face it. We need the shoutbox. There will always be trolls and spammers no matter what you do to try to prevent them.

As I have observed in SB conversations, I believe that the problem is the close-mindedness and rudeness of some old members here. They're not too accomodating and hospitable to new members. They belittle them and even refuse to help them. They stereotype them. =]

Chris, Ping, and luvin0it have given very valid points here. I also see some older members not being too patient with new users(which is another reason a one week "Watching" period might not be too bad) . And yes, the SB is a major pull to alot of players. For me, not so much. BUT if I were first joining this site and were able to observe the SB for a One week period, I would have a lot to look forward to in that week. I would keep coming back knowing that in just one week..I too can be a part of the conversation that I have been watching for a Tiny bit of time, maybe just enough time that I would know how to ask questions, how to participate in a trade etc...A nice incentive for a new player if you ask me.

Uh huh... That's what you would do, Aria. Most new members won't. Ok, if they were to have a first week ban, wouldn't sittin' there for a week, starin' at the shoutbox and not being able to do anything sounds a bit... Pointless? I don't think many people will be sitting there and learning the etiquette. If people were to sit there and stare at the shoutbox, it would be saying 'I'm rude and not familiar with the etiquette here'. Many people don't think they are rude and think they'll fit snuggly. If someone would want to know the etiquette and think they may be yelled at (which is unlikely) they would read the SB rules.

Many people won't understand why they aren't allow on the shoutbox. I bet some immature people would make a forum in the ideas and suggestions sections saying:

"WE SHUD BE ALLOUD ON THE SB!"

I know this is going to happen. When the under 12s were banned from the forums. A friend of a younger member signed up and faked her age (to older than 12). She made a forum saying (sort of from my memory, I can't really remember):

"UNDER 12s SHUD BE ALLOUD IN FORUMS, WHO AGGREES WIF ME?"

The actual forum contained a load of nonsense and everyone ignored it (apart from ones who didn't know why this girl was so concerned about under 12s not being allowed in, when she was allowed in the forums).

Why don't you just implement an 'ignore' feature for individual users? ;x

I think the main problem with the shout box is the fact that there are a lot of older users who don't understand how to deal with newer users. A lot of 'drama' I see stems from a snarky comment from a regular which then turns into a retaliation, and instead of ignoring it a whole group of people will jump in and 'start drama'

Yes if the newer player starts hurling offensive abuse that is serious and should not be allowed but as we all know it takes at least two people to argue. if you sb ban the newbie they may be silenced for a small amout of days but the original person who innitiatied the reaction will still be on the sb and the problem is still there, only next time it will be with another newbie.

We need to start being a lot more accomodating to newer users, yes they may ask stupid questions and (gasp) use chat speak occasionly but we are becoming a very unfriendly site. The suggestion that we ban users for 30 days because they say something that's not agreeable is actually very worrying. yes if they swear sure ban them for a certain amount of time but for saying something ridiculous? A lot of the older users have many inside jokes that may seem ridiculous to some but you wouldn't ban them?

When a new user starts res the time to have the sb at their disposal is crucial, there may be many things they don't uderstand in a newbie guide, or other things that that may have been missed and also where you start to make contact with your first res friends, no user will stick around on a small site to post on inactive forums.

I think if you want to put something in to punish people who creatu dramas on the sb then we should also punish those who participate in it (encouraging, fighting back, snarky comments etc).

The ignore feature for individual users is functional in v2.

I have been considering a short waiting period for the shoutbox, although I haven't decided about it yet. I will keep thinking about it.

A report feature that was suggested here is also functional for v2. It works for the chatroom, forums, rmail, and blogs.
