NO SNOW

As a kid I have always been fascinated
To cold white things that look like enchanted
I have always loved and never had hatred
To these weird things which I shall not take for granted

And now that I am growing I've come to know
That these cold white things will never show
People have a name for it, I think it is "SNOW"
And in this tropical country I know they won't show

Snow. It's lovely, white, pure, beautiful, and deadly.

Many years ago, when I was only around six years old, we were driving to my grandparent's house on my dad's side. It was snowing heavily, icy roads, windshield wipers on full speed, high beams on, but none of it truly helped us see the road better. It was only a two hour drive for my family, but for my uncle and his newly wedded wife, it was five.

Now, uncle Kenny and his new wife, Trish, were newly weds. They lived where it rarely snowed, had a small, compact car, and just found out that Trish was pregnant. Of course, they brought pictures of the little guy that was growing in her stomach. On the back were names they had come up with for him: William, Michael, Zackary, Harold, and even Otto. They were elated, nothing they wanted to see more was the priceless ex
pression on my grandmother's face when she knew she was getting another grandchild to spoil.

Nothing could prepare them for what happened next.

The snow was coming down so heavily, Kenny didn't see the car that was half pulled over on the side of the road, and half in it. The crash was horrible, both cars were totaled. All three people went to the hospital right away. Trish lost her baby, and the day she was released, she took her own life as well.

That year, Christmas was cancelled. There was no celebration, no Christmas Chocolate Pie, no Santa visit including the fake reindeer prints in the snow, with the half nibbled carrots left on the porch, no gifts, no hugs, no anything. As a six year old, I had no idea what was going on. I didn't know why Trish wasn't there. I didn't know why Uncle Kenny was sad. I didn't know why it was inappropriate to ask when we were opening gifts. And I wasn't told why either.

That year, I lost the aunt I never knew. I lost my Uncle Kenny, to his own mind, for several years after that. I was only told he was coming to live with us for a while, and that I was never, ever supposed to ask why, that I would understand when I got older. But, the thing that I never got that winter, was why it made him cry to see me covered in snow. Whenever I came inside from playing in the snow, he would tear up, hug me, then get a drink and disappear into the basement for several hours.

I hated to see him so sad. It made me hate the snow, hate winter time when it came, hate the cold, hate everything. My Uncle was closer to me at that time than my own mother and father were. For years I refused to go sledding with friends, or make snowmen and snow angels with my mom, or play in the snow with my dog, Bubba. It wasn't until I reached the age of 12, nearly six more years later, that I was told what happened that day.

And all of it was caused by just a little bit of snow.

One night i was shoveling snow all by myself. My dad drives a plow so he was out working. When he called at midnight to say he'd be coming home soon, I decided to clear a space for him in the drive way. Well, I'm not the most graceful of creatures, so as I was shoveling the shovel got caught on something. I managed to knock the wind out of myself with the handle. I very intelligently had left my inhaler inside. I had a very bad asthma attack and could not breathe. I was laying lat on my stomach among the drifts of snow when i turned my head far enough to see around me. In the snow next to where I'd fallen, the snow had formed itself into a figure. As I laid there, slowly slipping from consciousness I saw this beautiful kneeling angel. I awoke to my mother's worried face kneeling over me. I sat up to find the little angel still there and sat bewildered with my mother. My little snow angel watched over me as I slept.

Snow less night
----------------------

As I sat in silent aw
at the wonder I saw
A small breeze passed my face
a feeling I couldn't replace
weld up inside me
I was filled with glee
it was no lie
I knew I saw the snow
Then I stubbed my toe
It hurt and I awoke
to see it was just a joke
the sky was clear
and I saw a tear
run down my cheek
then I saw the peak
The mountain was clean
I started to lean
and I fell on my nose
another dream arose
As I sat in silent aw
at the wonder I saw
A small breeze passed my face

Snow.
We all know what it is
Pure white, cold, and soft
As you look out into the fields, you see the glowing moon, and how the snow is pouring softly on ground.
Nemesis, Low, Disease, Beau, and Patriot wandered into the night as the snow fell softly on their long fur.
All of them were black Omni, like shadows as they left small prints in the light slush.
They all followed the North Star, for they were looking for someone.
Even though they could not see, their minds pictured the snow, pictured it as something soft and white. A huge, white blanket that covered the land.
That is what they pictured.
All 5 Omni kept going as the snow kept falling, each time getting harder and harder.
They finally stopped in the middle if nowhere.
They found what they were looking for.
They caught a star.
A star that represented their owners and the snow.
Without the heavy winds if which way to go, the 5 Omni would've never found the star.
But they did and returned home, safely.
Snow.

Snow.
Most of you find it a nuisance or a bother.
But in Texas, especially down here in southern Texas, you crave snow. I was one of the children who couldn't get enough of the fluffy white stuff that fell on the ground once in a blue moon and actually sticked once in a double blue moon, if that. It was quite disheartening that I had to live most of my childhood without experiences most children take for granted. Even though I loved the stuff, the first few years of my childhood were spent with nary but a few crystals icing our cars here and there.

But all that was to change one Christmas Eve. We all woke up, expecting no more than a little ice on my father's car. We were shocked to realize that, for the first time in years, it was snowing! The entire day my heart was filled with wonder as I built snowmen, threw snowballs at my dad, and made snow angels. The snowman was barely three feet high, my snowballs hit my dad only once, and my angels melted as quickly as they were made, but I was a young child seeing her love for the first time, and it was all too much for me.

To this day our little plot of land south of Houston, Texas has never seen a snow quite so glorious, and it has never seen a white Christmas, but my heart always remembers and thanks God for the one time that the snow stuck to the ground, and my dreams as a child were realized.

Thank God for snow.

a little back story, when i was really little (like 3) i moved into the woods with my mom and dad. we moved in at night while it was snowing, it was really hard to move because the snow was so high, so i would jump in my dads foot steps to get around. it was fun at first until i was alone and my dad forgot me outside. i had a hard time making it to the house, this is the image that has been stuck in my mind sense

,¸¸,ø¤º°` Contest Over `°º¤ø,¸¸,

The winner is charmens!
The image you provided along with the story about walking in the footsteps left by your father in the snow just painted this eerily beautiful picture in my head. It's adorable and sweet, but a little sad and creepy at the same time.

The Sudo Raffle winner is kittykat43239.

A lone cowgirl sits at a bar in a saloon far from home. She has a bottle of beer in front of her, but it is untouched. Drops of condensation roll down the glass and pool on the bartop. The reason for her distraction is a piece of parchment, which she reads in silence, the aged letter ripped open and tossed aside with the wax seal cut in two. It's from her sweetheart, who she left back home at the cattle ranch to tend to the herd and the house in her absence. The letter reads,

Dear ...
