SUDO!
Dear Dakota,
I woke up this morning and you were gone. I dont know where you went, but I know you are'nt coming back. I'm sorry. It's my fault that you left, I know it is. I regret it every second that ticks by. Every moment that I can't spend with you I die a little inside because I could've prevented this. If I had done it different you would still be here with me. Your soft hand in mine, whisering in my ear. I know you still remember. I still remember. The rainy nights with nothing but us and the stars, the days when it seemed like there was nothing until we could be together at the end of the day. I need you, Kody. Wee need you.  I don't know what my future, or yours, holds in store, but I hope they are connected. I love you, Kody. I will go to the ends of the earth and back again to find you. You are my heart ,my soul, my everything. I love you. Kody, what ever happens, I want yu to always know, I will always love you.

-Cameron

I'm entering now. Continuing after srsmith *sudo

Reading the letter, Dakota knew he had misunderstood her intentions. She left to follow her dreams of becoming the best equestrian in the country. It was their argument that pushed her to pursue her dreams, but it seems he thinks she is angry at him. She left in a hurry and had forgotten to leave an explanation, but she never thought of never returning to him.

Dakota always believed that she was the best, but when she entered her first competition a few day ago, she met many equestrians who are more talented than she is. Her town had been small and she knew little of the outside, so her complete loss in the competition left her crestfallen. Almost every part of her wants to go back home to where she can still be the best in her town and where Cameron would comfort her. Everything that has happened seems to tell her that she didn't belong here. Her pride was hurt and her heart ached to be with Cameron again, to be in his strong arms that gives her a sense of security. However, there is a part of her that wants to keep trying. If she is not the best now, she can train until she is the best in the country.

She thought out the pros and cons of each option and weighted out the consequences. If she gives up on her dreams now, she will never be able to accomplish it and regret will follow her for the rest of her life. However, if she can at least try her best, she can go home proud and her heart will be lighter, knowing that she has done all she can. There is even a small chance she can be the best and return home with her dream accomplished. Once she weighted the options, she decides that it's best for her to continue pursuing her dream and she can head home after that. Once her resolve is absolute, she folds up the letter and places it in a pocket near her heart.

"Here I go!" she exclaims with determination as she heads out to try once more to become the best equestrian in the country.

You just say "sudo" anywhere in your post - it doesn't have to be part of the entry. And then your name gets entered for the raffle.

Dakota left the bar, fulfilled with new determination.
"We're going to show them, Windy," she told the dapple gray mare as
she reached the horse, yanking the knot free from the wooden bar holding the
other patrons' horses. "We'll head to the next town and show everyone how
good of a team we truly are!" she continued, getting a foot in a stirrup
and threw her leg over the saddle. Turning the horse away from the bar, she
found herself faced with the red haired woman who had won the contest Dakota
had entered that day. Flushing, partially due to mild intoxication,
embarrassment from her horrible performance, but also due to a slight flutter
in her chest that only increased as the woman, Rosalyn, smiled at her.

"Evenin', Dakota, was it?" Rosalyn greeted her, voice light and cheerful.

"Evening," Dakota replied, clearing her throat, trying not to stare so hard at the freckles that adorned the redhead's face, but they were quite cute. "You... Um. Did really well today. I admire your skill," she babbled helplessly.

Rosalyn's smile only widened at the compliment. "Thank you, darlin'. You weren't so bad yourself! Honestly, I thought you should'a been a few places up from where they put ya," she told her. "I'm headin' over to Westlyn for the next contest."

"Really? So am I!" Dakota gasped, suddenly excited. "Would you mind if I tagged along? Perhaps you could give me a few pointers along the way."

Cheerfully, Rosalyn laughed, nodding agreeably to Dakota's request. "I'd be happy to ride along with ya and show you and your pretty little pony some pointers," she replied, pulling her horse away, already packed to go, as was Dakota. "Shall we go?"

"Oh, yes! This'll be a wonderful trip. I've never quite had the chance to talk to such a great performer," Dakota continued. Neither had she met such a pretty lady, but she kept that comment to herself as she rode alongside Rosalyn, still having some hours to kill before dusk.

I shook my head as I rode behind Rosalyn. Had I actually felt attraction to her? No, it couldn't be possible, I already had someone wonderful. Cameron was waiting for me at home with loving, open arms, and I had never thought this way about a girl before. It was nuts that the thought had ever crossed my mind, and even crazier that I was actually considering it.

And yet she's just so... no, it just isn't a possibility Dakota, stop it. You don't like her. If you have to go home and grab a brand to sear it into your brain, so be it. Stop.

I decided to distract myself with asking the redhead some questions. After all, a few questions couldn't hurt, right?

So, Rosalyn, do you have any pointers you can give me?

Rosalyn pondered on the question for a second. She seemed to be pondering a way to tell me without offending me. Though I appreciated the fact she didn't want to break my heart and stop upon my dreams, I was slightly insulted that she thought I was really that terrible. I felt some of my attraction for her slip away, and I was relieved.

"Well, sugar, I would hold your reins like this instead. It gives you more of a handle on the horse, and turns their head better. See how Ghost over here turns his head when I turn him, which makes his body turn?" She showed me a completely different way to hold onto the reins, and I became greatly embarrassed when I realized how poorly I had been doing before. My face turned as red as a beet, and I looked down at the saddle and pretended to try to figure out the right position, while really I was just trying to hide my face from her.

Why are you so nervous, Dakota? It isn't like this lady's opinion will matter for any longer than this town. Just breathe. In and out. In and out. Stop worrying and just think of Cameron, who is amazing and who completely loves you. In and out. In and out. After all, this lady isn't that great, right? In and out. In and out.

I was vaguely aware of Rosalyn addressing me. I wasn't quite sure what she said, but it sounded a whole lot like, "Don't be embarrassed. Yall be as good as Ghost and I someday, ya hear?"

The tips of my ears began to burn red as I thought about the fact that she was telling me I was not as good as her precious Ghost and her. Maybe I was a little rough around the edges, but I certainly wasn't terrible. I opened my mouth to speak,  as my anger was getting the best of me:

"Now see here, Rosalyn...

"Sudo"

Dakota snapped her mouth shut, embarrassed that she had let her tongue slip. "I'm sorry, I just have had a bad day."
She let her hand slip down to Windy's neck, trying to distract herself from looking up at Rosalyn. Had she just ruined her chances of getting some of those pointers? Looking up, her gray eyes met green ones. She flinched, but didn't look away. She felt a connection, and wondered if Rosalyn felt it to. Just as Dakota finished the thought, Rosalyn broke the connection as she turned to survey the country.
"Beautiful isn't it?" Rosalyn asked, her voice tinged with awe.
"Nope, you certainly couldn't find a place like this." I said, agreeing with her as I glanced around me. We rounded a hill, and both of us stopped, our jaws dropping open.
Below us, four men where trying to force a young horse to get into the back of a trailer. One man had a whip, and even from here I could see the bloody tears on the horses hide, and yet it fought. Rising up on it's hooves it screamed a challenge to the world. Then the crack of the whip sent it dropping to all fours, its ears back and teeth snapping. I was surprised to find myself the one who urged my horse forward first. Galloping straight down the hill, I grabbed the whip out of the surprised man's hands.
"And what do you think you are doing?" I yelled, my face red once again.
" You cannot force a horse to go somewhere it does not wish to go!" I added, throwing my hands up in frustration. The men looked at me for a moment, then one stepped forward.
      "Miss,"...

"Miss, this colt here..." The man trailed off as the colt got up again, foam visible at the mouth.

"Oh, oh! It's got rabies?" she asked, slightly panicked. Urging Windy to move away, she continued talking to the man.
"So is.. Are our horses.. They couldn't...?" She sat quietly, the unfinished question hanging unmistakably as three of the men attempted to hog-tie the young horse without getting bit.

"No ma'am. Not very likely at all if you horse's up-t'-date on the shots. This'n here just had a run-in with a 'coon, ain't ya?" He chuckled as the horse, now on it's back with hooves up in the air, nickered pitifully. Dakota's heart lurched in sympathy. She turned back to the man.

"Just take care of him humanely, alright?" she plead. The man grinned, a cruel glint in his eye.

"We have orders from th' state o' Texas to do away with animals however we see fit. If this means shootin' it in the side o' the head at point-blank range, so be it. We ain't gon' take no whimperin' and whinin' from some bigshot city-slicker like yourself, lookin' to do some fancy animal rights protestin'."

"But-"

"Ain't no two ways around it, sugar. We gotta do what we gotta do."

Just then, the colt thrashed violently against its bonds and let out a ragged unearthly scream. Windy stepped back and whinnied, looking uneasy, and Dakota turned immediately, distracted by the need to calm her horse. Ghost was still, and Rosalyn crossed her arms. "Did you say a coon did this?" Dakota's attention was drawn over her shoulder to the skeptical tone of Rosalyn's voice.

"That's right, miss," the man said. He stepped forward, making it all the more obvious how much taller and stronger he was than Dakota or even Rosalyn, who was at least three years her senior. The frothing colt lurched again, ramming its head into the ground and tearing another cut in its face. Everyone turned to look.

"Put that horse down immediately," Rosalyn said. "Do whatever you have to." Her tone was all business now, in sharp and startling contrast to the gentility she had shown Dakota earlier. The words were a command, and nothing else. The man looked just as taken aback as Dakota was.

"Ros..." She faltered, unsure whether to even attempt to question Rosalyn's fierce determination. "Rosalyn! The poor thing should at least have comfort in--"

"Put it down now!" Rosalyn snapped. Dakota wasn't sure she'd even heard her. "That colt is long dead." Silence filled the dry air, and it remained until it was broken by another jarring scream from the dirty, bleeding colt. The man stared a second longer, then turned to his subordinates.

"Shoot it!" he ordered, and a young man obeyed, drawing a pistol from his belt and making good on the man's earlier threat, shooting the colt point-blank in the head. With a final disturbing wail, the bloody animal lay still. The man turned back to Rosalyn, his thick blonde eyebrows knitted with curiosity and mistrust. "Name's Hanning Jenkins. Mind telling me what this is all about?"

"Jenkins," Rosalyn said in greeting. Her red ponytail flicked her bare, freckled shoulder like a whip. "I'm Rosalyn O'Hara. Tell your men to clean up good. What we've got here is an infected."

"Infected?" Hanning asked. Dakota was glad he did. She was just about to question the word herself. They already knew the horse had rabies, didn't they? So why the extra fuss?

"An infected!" Rosalyn snapped. "A walker, lurker, biter, zombie! The living dead." Silence once more. A zombie? Dakota could hardly believe something like that. It was a reaction out of a movie or one of Cameron's horror novels. Hanning seemed to be thinking the same.

"Now come on, miz Rosalyn. You can't expect me to believe that this colt--" But he was cut short by the sound of screams from behind him. He turned. Rosalyn swore quietly. Windy balked again, and Dakota turned to soothe her. When she turned back to her human companions, she could hardly believe her eyes. The source of the commotion was the young man who had put the colt down. He was attacking one of his fellow workers, grabbing at him and -- trying to bite him? Dakota's eyes widened. She suddenly felt more like following Windy's lead than calming her. Before she knew it, chaos had broken out. The young man had managed to bite both the person he was attacking and someone who had tried to pry him off, and all three of them were now clawing at their mates, fighting tooth and nail to get at their flesh.

"The kid must have had an open cut," Rosalyn said. "I thought I'd seen the last of this when I left Alaska." She hadn't moved an inch. Her face was like stone. Dakota stared awe-struck at her, amazed that she could be so calm in a situation like this. Ghost was just as still, though her eyes were wary. "It'll be all over town in half an hour, across Texas in a day. Thousands will die." Hanning spun to look at her.

"So what do we do?" he demanded.

She looked him in the eyes and threw her bag over her shoulder. "We run."

Ghost responded to Rosalyn's commands quickly and easily. It was beyond obvious he'd been in this type of scenario before. Was this the infection that had led to the dissolution and quarantine of the entire state of Alaska last year? Dakota had heard that it was devastating, but she never knew it was anything like this. According to the news, it had been a new type of plague, derived from some ancient sample in a lab. She scrambled to get Windy to cooperate. The poor mare was already half-panicked by the fuss and the thickening stench of rot in the air as the newly-made zombies went quickly into a state of partial decay, the virus gaining hold in their bodies and multiplying like crazy. Hanning appeared from nowhere and helped her guide the horse after Rosalyn, who was running beside Ghost in the opposite direction of the commotion. "I'm Dakota," she managed to gasp as she ran.

"Good to meet ya," Hanning said, and called ahead to Rosalyn. "Where are we going?!" Rosalyn didn't slow down, but called back,

"We need to get out of town! We'll decide what to do after that." So they ran, and true to Rosalyn's prediction, chaos broke out around them more quickly than could be believed. The three people and two horses didn't stop running until they were well away from the town, in the middle of the countryside.

"Well," panted Hanning, "What are we going to do now?"

Dakota drew a breath. "I might know a place we could stay."

Let's all cheer on Riyo as she battles the great and powerful college midterms!

If you're not in college, imagine the Elite 4, but when you walk into the stadium they make you take an essay test instead of doing a Pokémon battle.
