Someone, somewhere, was name Bye, and everyone said "bye Bye" To him. then people from all around thought that it was customary to say bye bye!

Bye was a cool person. :3

I don't say bye bye.... I guess it's a habit in some people. Maybe some people change the word 'goodbye' to bye bye. Don't know...

Why do we say bye bye and not hi hi?
Well in some places we do. Just not in America. I mean in Japan they say moshi moshi, which is pretty much the same thing in a more polite tone, but its also only used for answering phones.

But I know people who say "hi hi" and "hi hi hi"
But maybe bye bye was derived from the phrase "I'll see you by and by"

Meaning I'll see you when time permits?

Why do we say "bye bye" but not "hi hi"?

I don't really say "bye bye" anymore.. xD I say "bye" or "goodbye". "Bye bye" seems to be more commonly used by little children. :3

Why do we say "bye bye" but not "hi hi"?

Because 'hi hi' makes people think you're giggling at something. Personally I use 'bai bai'.

"Bye bye" rolls off the tongue better than "Hi hi" does

Bye bye is easier to say than 'goodbye' which is sorta stiff to me. And 'hi hi' is just too long xD Humans are confusing creatures.

Because 'bye bye' sounds adorable when a baby says it, not so sure 'hi hi' would have the same effect.  Also bye bye is the shortened term of 'goodbye' same as hi being the shortened term of 'hello'.
