Hello, everyone! Yes, it's that time of year once again. Welcome to Laya's free raffle in celebration of her birthday (just don't ask how old she is)! This raffle starts today, November 22, and will run until Res reset for December 22, which is Laya's birthday.
Edit: The QotD for December 21 and the main raffle will remain open till I get back online after reset on the 22nd to officially close them, so get those entries in while you still can! ;)

The rules are simple: Just post your entry in purple text saying you want to join the raffle! Oh, and you have to mention the password-- it's "K-pop". :D If you want to get creative with that, it's up to you. :D If you don't follow the rules, your ticket won't get counted, so please make sure you've got your entry right!
Only one ticket per person! EXCEPT. If you tell your friends to join the raffle, and they post an entry here saying you referred them, you get an additional ticket per friend, for up to five friends / tickets! ALSO: If you join the Question of the Day raffle, you get one additional ticket. And if you win a QotD raffle, that's another additional ticket. AND I might add new activities and ways to get more tickets while this is ongoing!
You may win only once, though. Since I'm going to be drawing the numbers in order from first prize onward, it means that you get to choose the prize you want the most, from the list of available prizes.

November 22: Laya lives in the Philippines. What month is the Christmas season considered to begin in that country? Answer: As early as the first day of September! The holidays are considered to start on December 16, which is the first day of the Simbang Gabi (also called Misa de Aguinaldo or Misa de Gallo) or Morning Mass, and end on the first Sunday of January (some people say January 6) which is the Feast of the Three Kings. However, once the -ber months (or brrr months, as we call them) start, it's already considered the beginning of the Christmas season. So when September 1 arrives, radio stations begin playing Christmas songs, and we joke-greet one another with "Merry Christmas!" and ask for presents. Hee.
November 23: The Simbang Gabi was mentioned in the answer to the previous question. What traditional Filipino belief is connected with this activity? Answer: There is a belief that if you succeed in attending all nine Morning Masses in the same year, your prayer or wish will be granted. Hey, it's a lot harder to do than you think, since you have to wake up very early for nine successive mornings just to make it to church for the Simbang Gabi, which traditionally starts at 4:00 a.m!
November 24: Speaking of mornings, what country was also called "The Land of the Morning Calm"?
Answer: Korea was once called "The Land of the Morning Calm," which is a pretty attempt at translating the Chinese characters for the country's old name, Joseon. Although we mostly think of South Korea now when we mention the name "Korea," the "Land of the Morning Calm" nickname really refers to the Korean peninsula in general.
November 25: How many years did the Joseon Dynasty of Korea last? Answer: 505 years, or approximately 5 centuries. Whew! The Joseon Dynasty was founded way back in July 1392 by General Yi Seong-gye, who became its first king, Taejo, by dethroning King Gongyang of the preceding Goryeo Dynasty and starting one of his own. Joseon technically ended in October 1897 because King Gojong changed the name of the kingdom to the Korean Empire and named himself its first Emperor. The Jeonju House of Yi (or Lee, as it is more conventionally spelled), the royal clan that Yi Seong-gye founded, continued to rule the Empire until Japan annexed Korea in 1910, and the clan still exists up to the present, although no longer recognized as royalty.
November 26: Since we're now talking about the Joseon Dynasty, what is the name of the annual historical record of this dynasty? Answer: The Joseon Wangjo Sillok or the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (often referred to simply as the Annals). The recorders of the Annals wrote down everything that happened, from important events to day-to-day activities, especially everything that the king did. They were historiographers who were supposed to keep the record factual and unbiased. Thus the king wasn't even allowed to read them so he couldn't influence or change the record! The Annals are made up of 1,823 volumes and were kept from 1413 to 1865-- that's 452 years-- and are considered the longest continuous history of a single royal dynasty in the world. Whew. If you were wondering how the Koreans could create such detailed historical dramas, there's part of your answer.
November 27: Speaking of such dramas... what specific term is used to refer to Korean historical dramas like Jumong and Dae Jang Geum? Answer: Sageuk. A lot of sageuks run from 40 or more episodes, and the early ones actually hit over 100 episodes each! They often portray the lives and times of famous Korean historical figures like kings or queens. A current trend though is for shorter, more fictionalized sageuks that run from 16 to 24 episodes and may or may not be based on real people and events. Perhaps my favorite of these fusion sageuks is Sungkyunkwan Scandal, where Park Min-young played a girl who pretends to be a boy so she can study at Sungkyunkwan in a time when no women were allowed there.
November 28: Sungkyunkwan Scandal was set in the reign of King Jeongjo of Joseon, who was the grandson of King Yeongjo. What made Yeongjo's mother unique among all the mothers of Joseon's kings? Answer: In all of Joseon's history, she was the only person who was able to change her caste status from lowest to highest. King Yeongjo's mother, Lady Choi, was born a slave. When King Sukjong noticed her and made her one of his concubines, he gave her a noble rank which made her a part of the royal family (concubines without a rank were not considered part of the royal family). Historians speculate that Sukjong must have loved her very much, because he ended up promoting her to the highest rank of his concubines with the ti
tle of Suk-bin. Choi Suk-bin, the "Joseon Cinderella," not only became the mother of a king, Yeongjo, but the ancestress of several kings as well. Perhaps the most famous drama adaptation of her life is the sageuk Dong Yi, starring Han Hyo-joo as Lady Choi and Ji Jin-hee as King Sukjong.
November 29: Ji Jin-hee, who played King Sukjong in Dong Yi, is also known for being in the famous 2003 sageuk Dae Jang Geum, or Jewel in the Palace. What is the titular character Jang Geum known for? Answer: Jang Geum is said to be the first female royal physician in Joseon's history, and was allowed to use the word Dae, which means "great," before her name. She is mentioned in the Annals as the doctor to King Jungjong of Joseon and his royal family in the early 16th century. Jang Geum was played by Lee Young-ae in the drama.
November 30: In contrast to Jang Geum, the first woman known to receive a medical degree did so in 1849. Who was this American woman? Answer: Elizabeth Blackwell. She was the first woman to graduate from medical school-- in the US-- and was also the first woman to be listed on the UK Medical Register.
December 1: Speaking of Elizabeths. What was the nickname given to Elizabeth I of England, taken from Edmund Spenser's poem The Faerie Queene? Answer: Gloriana. Edmund Spenser wrote The Faerie Queene with Elizabeth in mind, so I guess you could call it a fanfic, or to be precise, a real-person fic. In return, people began calling her Gloriana, which was the name of the faerie queen in the poem.
December 2: While we're on the subject of fairies, there is a popular mythical creature from Korean fairy tales that is depicted as a monster that eats human livers, but is also said to be on a quest to become human. What is the name of this creature? Answer: Kumiho or gumiho, the nine-tailed fox, similar to the Chinese huli jing and Japanese kitsune. It is often depicted as taking on the appearance of a beautiful woman in order to lure men and kill them. Part of the legend says, though, that a kumiho can become human if it embarks on a quest. December 3: Speaking of kitsune, what's the full name of FX, the kitsune from Mercedes Lackey's SERRAted Edge books? Answer: FX stands for Foxtrot X-ray, but his real name is Saski Berith. FX has only three tails, and is therefore considered weak, but that doesn't mean he can't help when needed.
December 4: While we're talking about foxes, Baha the fennec was a character in which classic children's book? Answer: Mischief in Fez by Eleanor Hoffmann, one of my favorite children's books. Baha is a fennec, a small desert fox with large ears that lives in the Sahara. He comes to the city of Fez to help the city judge's son, Mousa ben Muhammad Ali, deal with some evil mischief. But Baha isn't just what he seems. ;)
December 5: Who was the china rabbit who had a miraculous journey in Kate DiCamillo's book? Answer: Edward Tulane, and the ti
tle of the book is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. The book was featured prominently in the 2014 Korean drama You From Another Star, starring Jeon Ji-hyun and Kim Soo-hyun.
December 6: While we're talking about rabbits and dramas, what's Tae-kyung's nickname for Minam/Minyeo in the 2009 Korean drama You're Beautiful? Answer: Pig-Rabbit, of course. Bad Tae-kyung! It started out as a not-particularly-kind nickname and ended up a sign of affection. Personally, I want one of those Pig-Rabbit stuffed toys, because they're so cute! You're Beautiful is one of my favorite Korean dramas on so many levels-- it's funny, it's sweet, and there are a lot of memorable scenes. Not to mention that it introduced me to my two favorite K-pop bands, CNBlue and FT Island!
December 7: Speaking of CNBlue, what is the hometown of both Jung Yonghwa and Lee Jonghyun? Answer: Busan, South Korea. In fact, fans call them the "Busan Brothers" (even though they're not actually blood-related, but then CNBlue are said to be just as close as brothers). Makes me wonder what they feed 'em in Busan, because those are two very talented young musicians-- not just good at singing and playing instruments, but composing, too.
December 8: While we're talking about brothers, which US TV series is about the adventures of brothers named Sam and Dean? Answer: Supernatural. Jared Padalecki plays Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles plays Dean Winchester, brothers who hunt supernatural beings who are loose in this world, like demons and monsters.
December 9: Speaking of monsters, which mythical monster from the Philippines is featured in an episode of the US TV series Grimm? Answer: Aswang. The way it was portrayed on Grimm was actually quite simplified--according to Philippine folklore, aswang is a shapeshifter that can take on any form, and it feeds not only on unborn babies but on human innards as well.
December 10: Since we mentioned Philippine monsters and babies, which Philippine mythical monster loves to take on the appearance of an abandoned baby in order to fool its potential victims? Answer: Tiyanak or Tyanak. It loves to appear like an abandoned baby and lure its victims with its cries. Once the unsuspecting prey picks it up though... chomp! It is said that you can drive a tiyanak away by saying "Susmaryosep!" which is a contraction of Hesus Maria y Husep, or Jesus, Mary and Joseph, so essentially, by invoking God. And it is also said that the only way to get rid of a tiyanak for good is to burn the swaddling clothes that were on it when it was picked up, because those are its skin.
December 11: Speaking of... which 1968 horror movie stars Mia Farrow as a pregnant woman who believes her neighbors are members of a cult and her husband is planning to sacrifice their child to them in exchange for a successful career? Answer: Of course it's Rosemary's Baby.
December 12: This question is going to need a little more in-depth research on everyone's part, but I couldn't resist it... what is the connection between the movie Rosemary's Baby and the Japanese drama franchise Hana Yori Dango? Answer: The Dakota. It's a very famous and prestigious apartment building in New York City that was the home of many celebrities, including John Lennon. It was used in filming both Rosemary's Baby and the 2007 J-drama Hana Yori Dango Returns-- specifically, the apartment building where Rosemary and her husband live in Rosemary's Baby, and also where Tsukasa Domyouji stayed when he lived in New York in Hana Yori Dango Returns.
December 13: Now that we're on the subject of Japanese dramas... what "club" does Fujioka Haruhi belong to? Answer: Ouran High School Host Club, of course. And it really isn't as risque as it seems, despite the "host club" name. I just love this wacky satire on shoujo manga, from its original manga form to the live-action drama and movies. Who's my favorite member of the club? Well, aside from Haruhi, it's Kyoya, of course.
December 14: On the subject of manga adaptations... name this perennially smiling and polite young antagonist in Rurouni Kenshin who is said to never feel any emotions at all. He's played by one of Laya's favorite Japanese young actors in the movie trilogy. Answer: Seta Sojiro, a young psychopath indeed. Kamiki Ryunosuke brought him to life in the movies, but then I didn't have any doubts about that casting because I'd already seen him as Ninomae in Keizoku 2: SPEC.
December 15: So just what is Ninomae's "spec"? :P Answer: He can stop time by snapping his fingers. Although Ninomae himself explains that it's not really a matter of him stopping time but of him speeding up time so that he can move faster while others move so slowly they seem to have stopped.
December 16: Speaking of time... in which Korean drama does Ji Hyun-woo play a time-traveling Joseon scholar? Answer: Yes, it's Queen Inhyun (or Inhyeon)'s Man. Ji Hyunwoo plays Kim Boongdo, a young Joseon nobleman and scholar who tries to protect the titular queen... only when he ends up time-jumping to modern times, he encounters an actress who's playing the role of the queen in a drama... haha, talk about me
ta. Anyway, as a backgrounder, in connection with the November 28 question, Inhyeon was King Sukjong's queen; basically, he dethroned her due to a court intrigue that resulted in the deaths of her family, and promoted one of his concubines in her place--- and then he dethroned that concubine and brought Inhyeon back. Choi Sukbin, meanwhile, was another of his concubines, and one that from many accounts was loyal to Queen Inhyeon.
December 17: Since we mentioned me
ta... name this 2012 Korean drama that's a satire on the K-drama industry (and boy, does it pile on the me
ta references!). It stars Kim Myungmin, Jung Ryeowon, and Super Junior's Siwon. Answer: King of Dramas. Kim Myungmin plays Anthony Kim, the titular character who's a producer, and Jung Ryeowon plays a screenwriter. Everything that can go wrong while making a drama goes wrong, and what happens next can plausibly explain all the over-the-top shenanigans that are familiar to a lot of K-drama fans.
December 18: Kim Myungmin also played a conductor in a 2010 drama about a classical orchestra. What's the ti
tle of this drama that also referenced a famous classical composer? Answer: Beethoven Virus. Lee Jia and Jang Geunseok also star in this drama.
December 19: While we're talking of the classics, what classic novel was adapted into a 2014 fusion sageuk starring Lee Jinwook, CNBlue's Jung Yonghwa, Yang Donggeun, and Jung Haein? Answer: The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas. The Korean drama is actually quite a good adaptation, from early 17th century France to early 17th century Korea (yes, actually the same time period), from the intrigues of the French court to the intrigues of the Joseon court; the characters are easily identifiable as the original Dumas characters and yet have their own individuality; and the story follows the spirit of the original as well, being a wild and wacky romp. Lee Jinwook plays Crown Prince Sohyeon (Athos), Yang Donggeun is Heo Seung-po (Porthos), Jung Haein is Ahn Minseo (Aramis), and Jung Yonghwa rounds up the group as Park Dalhyang (D'Artagnan).
December 20: Speaking of wild and wacky romps, what is the ti
tle of the hilarious 2014 Korean drama about a rock band and a cabbage field, starring FT Island's Lee Hongki and former Miss Korea Honey Lee? Answer: Modern Farmer. I admit, I began watching it because I'm a Lee Hongki / FT Island fan, and I ended up hooked for a lot more reasons than that! Its humor is very much on the low side, but it makes up for that with lots of heart and social commentary leavened with a ton of laughs. Lee Shiun, Park Minwoo, and Kwak Dongyeon also star as band members. The role of Minki was practically tailor-made for Hongki, but Honey Lee set aside her usual femme fatale roles to play down-to-earth farm girl Yoonhee, who might now be my favorite K-drama heroine ever, and that's saying some.
December 21: For our last QotD, which K-pop song is Laya's birthday song? :P Answer: "Winter Child", of course. And it is an actual "Happy Birthday" song. I first heard it sung by Suzy in the K-drama Dream High, and it's just so pretty. Even if we don't have winter here in the tropics, just listening to the song makes me think the weather is cooler, heh.
