The QotD for November 26 is now officially closed. A moment while I organize stuff and draw the winner! :D The answer is: The Joseon Wangjo Sillok or the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (often referred to simply as the Annals). The recorders of the Annals wrote down everything that happened, from important events to day-to-day activities, especially everything that the king did. They were historiographers who were supposed to keep the record factual and unbiased. Thus the king wasn't even allowed to read them so he couldn't influence or change the record! The Annals are made up of 1,823 volumes and were kept from 1413 to 1865-- that's approximately 452 years-- and are considered the longest continuous history of a single royal dynasty in the world. Whew. If you were wondering how the Koreans could create such detailed historical dramas, there's part of your answer. And random.org says the winner is: DunDun96! A lot of sageuks run for 40 or more episodes, and the early ones actually hit over 100 episodes each! They often portray the lives and times of famous Korean historical figures like kings or queens. A current trend though is for shorter, more fictionalized sageuks that run from 16 to 24 episodes and may or may not be based on real people and events. Perhaps my favorite of these fusion sageuks is Sungkyunkwan Scandal, where Park Min-young played a girl who pretends to be a boy so she can study at the famous Confucian academy, Sungkyunkwan, in a time when no women were allowed there.
