“Get down!” I hear Commander Lance shout.  The year is 2296.  I am a rebel, fighting against the U. U. R.  The rebellions have continued since 2273, but the war is just the same as it has been for the past twenty years.

“Casey!” Commander shouts.  Casey.  That’s me.

                      “What?” I shout back.

“Fire up the photon cannons! Let’s show those clankers a good time!”

                      “No can do commander!”

“Dangit! All right then.  We can’t hold out much longer.  Shoot the reactor!”

I walk over to the reactor and pull a handle.  Soldiers fall back to our defenses surprisingly quickly.  That was a signal, telling the soldiers to retreat, but not for the reason someone might think.  Quickly, the reactor starts crackling with energy.  Blue electricity moves up and down the machine.  Suddenly, it shoots a ball of condensed energy onto the battlefield.  The energy hits the ground and fizzes down to the size of a fist.  Then it explodes, spreading over the land and casting a blue light on the scenery.  A shield of energy rises up and forms a dome around the U.U.R. droids.  They run around inside like rats in a cage, shooting and banging on the inescapable dome.  Lightning bolts sprout out of the inside of the dome and slither along the ground, hungrily looking for something to destroy.  Anything trapped inside the dome becomes a target of the bolts.  Since the soldiers saw the signal and escaped in time, few lives were lost.  As for the droids, they weren’t so lucky.

“Nice going, Casey!” Commander praises.  “Now we just need to keep them away from the reactor! If they shoot it, the shield will crash!” Apparently he spoke too soon.  Some lucky droid escaped the reactor and heard the commander’s words.  Aiming his best, he shot at the reactor a number of times.  I grab my gun, but he fires off a lucky shot and hits the reactor.  An explosion of blue light and crackling energy lights up the battlefield.

“Piece of junk,” I mutter under my breath.  I fire and hit it the first time.  Chaos now takes over the battleground.  Tendrils of energy appear in several places, destroying everything they touch.  Droids and marines are firing at will, and the lightning is killing countless people.  Unexpectedly, a bolt of lightning appears at my feet.  It skims over my legs and I fall in agony.  Writhing in pain on the ground, darkness starts to eat at the corners of my vision.  My body goes limp and my world goes black.

When I wake up, the first thing I see is the ground.  My vision is groggy, and I don’t see any soldiers or droids around.  Then I hear an unexpected sound.  Animals screeching.  Insects buzzing.  The air tastes humid and moist, like it just rained.  It smells like earth, real soil, real plants and trees.  I must be dreaming, I think.  But that’s when I get up and notice my surroundings.  The forest.  A dense forest has grown around the field, encasing the space.  But this forest is not normal.  The plants are so horrific, like none you’ve ever seen before.  The animals are disturbing.  Monkeys have fangs, eight eyes, and arms sprouting on both sides of their bodies, their bloody claws glinting in the moonlight.  Birds with two beaks on top of each other that have teeth as sharp as razors, shrieking at others of their kind.  Giant mosquitoes with three-foot long needles, ready to impale anything that comes their way.

“What the blazes…” I say.  I cautiously pull out my gun in case of an attack.  But then I wonder why the forest hasn’t expanded to where I am.  Then I notice the reactor behind me.  Even though it is entirely destroyed, a glowing piece of blue glass still remains.  I bend down to pick it up.  When I touch it, energy surges through me and out of shock, I quickly let go.  It may be useful, my conscience tells me.  I reluctantly pick it up and slip it inside my combat suit.  I turn around to survey my surroundings, and something rustles in the forest.  “Who’s there?” I ask.  Nothing answers.  “Who’s There?” I ask again, and this time something jumps out behind me.  I turn around quickly and point my gun.  There is a thing standing there, slowly approaching me.  It looks human but I quickly realize that it’s not.  It is moving its hands in some unrecognizable motion, and soon I can’t move my arms.  I don’t know what’s happening, but I grasp the idea that it is controlling me.  “ St-t-top-ppp,” I say, using a tremendous amount of effort.  It moves its hands downward.  Suddenly I lose my balance.  I drop my gun and my body won’t function.  A feeling of horror bubbles up inside me.  All I can do is hope that it’s a friend.  I utter one last,  “Please…” before I fall unconscious (for the second time today).

Soon after, though I’m not sure how long, I jump to a start.  It is very dark out.  I wonder why, but then remember what had happened earlier.  I must be in the forest, I think.  I reach for my gun but it is not there.  Then I see it hanging up in a tree.

“Great,” I mumble.  “That thing must’ve brought me here.”

                      “I am human, you know.”

“Aah!” I shout, surprised.  “That was sort of awkward.”

“Don’t worry.  I’ve been called that before…” He trails off.

“Well, what’s your name?” I ask, trying to change the subject.

“Dmitri,” he says, “But you can call me Dem.”

Following the introduction, Dem gives me my gun back and we go for a walk.  He explains that he has a condition that allows him to move or control things with his mind.

“I used to think of it as a curse,” he says, “But it does come in handy when you’re trying to survive in a highly sophisticated, predatory, mutated forest.” That comment had me laughing for a while.

“So…how did the forest mutate?” I ask.

“It has something to do with your reactor,” he says.  “The reactor lets off waves that slowly speed brain function.  When it was destroyed, it let off huge amounts of these waves, therefore immediately starting to mutate the plants or animals in the area.

“Why did the humans not mutate? And why was I not captured by the forest?” I ask.

“The suits that they were wearing were designed to withstand the effects of the energy.  As for you, I think it has something to do with too much power at the explosion spot.”

“One more thing… how do you know all this?”

“I was a scientist for the U.U.R.” he answers.  “I designed the reactor.”

                      “Oh.”

“Don’t worry.  I was completely against the treatment of the people.  I quit after I found out.” There is silence for a second, until I ask another question.

“Do you know anything about the humans or where they went?”

“Well, I assumed that there would be some central being controlling the whole forest.  The humans could be held captive there.”

“Good.  Well then, sounds like a plan.  We can rest tonight, and we’ll start off tomorrow.” We soon come to a clearing.  “This looks like a good place to set up camp,” I say.

“I’ll make shelter, you scout around for firewood.” I see Dem move his hands around and a bunch of sticks and leaves arrange themselves into a small tent.  I grin as I pick up the firewood.

Later that night, when I lay down to sleep, something rustles in the woods.  High up in the trees, a monkey screeches,  which makes me jump five feet in the air, but then I calm down and try to fall asleep.  As I am about to drop off, there is another rustle in the woods.  I reach for my gun and put my finger on the trigger.  I stand up and look around.  Then I catch something moving out of the corner of my eye.  Before I can get away, a vine stretches out and takes hold of my leg.

“Ow!” I shout.  The vine yanks my leg and I fall over.  I shoot, but miss in the dark.  Other vines stretch out and grab my arms or wrap around my body.  “Dem!” I shout.  I’m about to scream to Dem again, but then a vine grabs my face and covers my mouth.  I let out a muffled, “Mmmph!” but it’s no use.  Soon vines start growing tiny needles out of them.  They pierce my flesh and inject a poison.  My whole body screams in agony, but the poison immobilizes me.  I cannot move or shout.  I can’t even fire my gun.  I am dragged into the forest by the plants, completely helpless.  I am reminded of when Dem captured me, but it was much different.  This time I am certain that these plants are not going to befriend me.

The poison must have knocked me out, for I wake up with no sense of where I am.  The first thing I observe is the light.  It must be morning, I think.  The light eventually dulls, though, and I figure it must have been an after effect of the poison.  After the light wears off, I notice I am in some sort of cocoon.  Silvery threads wrap around me and stick to my skin.  I try to make a hole in the cocoon, but it is too strong.  Then I remember that I have a chunk of the reactor in my jacket.  I take it out, and it is still glowing.  I press it against the cocoon and it melts right through.  I poke my head through the hole and see other cocoons hanging from the canopy of the forest.  What’s happening…?  I ask myself.  Then I hear a familiar voice behind me.

“Eeeugh, what is this stuff?” I hear Dem yell.

“I was thinking the same thing!” I laugh back.

“Yeah, so was I!” says an unfamiliar voice.

“Who’s that?” I say quietly to Dem.

“Hey, yall! I’m Swampy, master of camouflage! And you ‘er?”

“I’m Dem, and this is…” That’s when I realize I never told Dem my name.

                      “Casey,” I say.  “Casey Jones”

“Well, it was nice meetin’ ya! It’s goin’ ter be too bad when we have to say goodbye…” At first I’m confused, but then I get what he means.  We are going to die here.  I look down to the ground, but we are too high up.  I have no options for escape.  Then I remember that Dem’s “condition” – that he could move us with his mind.

                      “Dem?”

                      “What?”

“Could you, uh, you know…get us outta here?”

“Sorry.  That poison hasn’t worn off yet.”

“Blast…” I say. My heart sank.  I tried to think of some other escape, but despair spread through me.  The world was going to end, and there was nothing I could do about it.

“Casey!” Dem says urgently.  “You should see this.  I look out of the hole in my cocoon and see vines reaching up and grabbing the cocoons.  As the threads fall apart, humans emerge.  But then I look closer.  They are not humans -- well, not anymore.  They walk around like mindless zombies, bumping into each other.  I fiddle around in my combat suit for binoculars.  When I look through them, I see the mutated humans.  They are greenish in color, with their clothes in tatters.  Their eyes are blank and devoid of thought.  They don’t look like a problem, I say.  But that’s when I see what happens when they attack.  A monkey swings by in the trees.  The mutations look at it and then, all of a sudden, vines burst out of their bodies.  Three or four per human, bursting out of their stomachs, and chests and wrapping around the monkey and constricting it.

This is horrible, I think to myself.  I look at Dem and Swampy, and they have the same terrified ex
pression that I do.  Now that I know what will happen to the human race, I will do anything to save them.  Then I remember that I won’t get the chance.  I am still thinking these dark thoughts when I feel a sudden thud on the top of my cocoon.  A woman lowers her face down in front of the hole on my cocoon.

“Ssshhhh,” she says.  I nod back.  “I’m here to save you.” Then she clambers back on top of the cocoon.  At first I don’t feel any movement, but then I am suddenly falling towards the ground.

“Ahhh!” I shout.  I am certain that I will splatter on the forest floor when, suddenly, I swing forward.  She must be on a vine, I think to myself.  The woman does a similar procedure with Dem and Swampy, and before the mutated humans notice, she fastly swings out of the clearing.

“I guess we will get to save the humans after all,” I murmur happily.

That is my (unfinished) story. I hop you like it! I will try to make a part 2. I hope you are still accepting stories. Thank you!

We again join our three adventuring heroes, Dem, Iris, and Casey. The forest killed their friend Swampy, and they are trying to save the Human Race.

As we walk through the forest, Dem tells us his plans. “I saw your swords, Iris, and that chunk from the reactor, Casey. They both destroy anything living. Casey, your gloves protected you, and as for Iris, the hilts of your swords are pure metal. If I combine these weapons and use my powers, I just might be able to destroy the Center Tree.

“What about the humans inside?” Iris asks.

“I can shield them with my energy field so the explosion won’t affect them.”

“Sounds like a plan… but what about the creatures? Won’t they attack you?”

“I got that covered,” Dem reassures.

“When do you think we’ll get there?” I ask.

“Looks like the trees and plants are getting bigger…” Iris says.

“That’s because we’re getting closer,” Dem says.

“Well when are we going to get there?” Iris asks.

“It could be soon, I don’t know…” Dem says as we step into the clearing. In the center stands a ginormous tree. It’s roots stretch all over the field, pulsing with red-blue liquid.

“The safest thing is for you two to climb up a tree nearby and stay there. It’s going to be too dangerous for me and for you if you come with me,” Dem orders. “I’ll lose my focus, and I need all of my energy for this.” Iris and I climb up a tree and wait, watching Dem. He walks up to the Center Tree. Vines shoot out to grab him, but he flicks his wrists and they slash apart. Then he sits down and a shield pops up around him. Anything that touches it withers. As more and more living things touch the shield and die, more energy surrounds Dem. As the energy becomes more defined, Iris’s swords and my blue shard from the reactor start shaking. We take them out and put them on the ground, and they fly over to Dem. He stands up and catches them, and the shield opens. Dem walks out and blue-purple energy crackles around him. He takes the reactor chunk and holds it up. His energy flows to it and it breaks in half. He then puts one piece to each sword and they meld together. He raises his arms to the sky, and a purple glow lights up the landscape.

The ground starts to vibrate. Iris’s swords glow with the blue shard. The dirt and rocks around him rise into the air. Moisture in the air solidifies and turns into tiny droplets of water, constantly freezing and melting, changing shape continuously. Air starts to whirl around him. Flames spring up at his feet and hands and grow taller. Vines suddenly come alive and move next to Dem, up his arms and around his body. Dem’s hands are still in the air, energy curling off them like wisps of steam from hot water. The stones suddenly morph into shining blades. The water freezes into icicles and starts to glow with energy. Vines grow thorns and perk up, ready to strike.  Air thrashes around, and the flames blaze with heat.

Then, Dem starts to run at the Center Tree, all of nature’s forces with him. The stones, ice and vines rip and tear at the tree’s flesh. It starts to leak green sap, dripping from the gashes like blood from a wound. Then Dem jumps at the tree. He raises his swords and leaps out to strike the tree. The swords sink into the flesh of the tree. In a mere moment, things seem to take hours. I see the reactor pieces spark to life and channel energy into the swords. I see Dem’s face. He looks incredibly tired. I wonder if he will make it, I think. Then I realize that he won’t. He’s exerting too much energy. I don’t know what to do.

If I go to save Dem, all will be lost. He will lose concentration, and the humans will not survive. If I don’t, Dem will die from exhaustion, but the humans will survive. It’s the most challenging and painful choice I’ve ever had to make.  I decide in about three seconds.

Dem looks frail and weak all of a sudden. His features are becoming bonier and skinnier by the second. The swords are glowing with a bright purple light, and energy is coursing through them and into the Center Tree. The veins in the tree start to glow brightly. Branches bend, roots burrow and surface. The tree creaks, as if it’s screaming in pain.  I look at Dem. He is just barely alive, now lying on the ground. The swords and reactor pieces are sucking energy out of him or anything living in the area. The energy coming from Dem is faint and weak, almost flickering out. Soon after, he looks at Iris and me and smiles. Then he exhales. A bright flickering purple orb rises out of his mouth. “I must… p-pay… the p-p-pric-ce,” he says faintly, but somehow I hear him. “G-good-d-b-bye…” He closes his eyes and stays still.

The orb of light rises and is absorbed by he swords. Despite my hard experiences as a rebel fighter, tears well up in my eyes. I see the swords on the tree flicker out. Nothing happens. I ask myself if he’d sacrificed himself for nothing, when the Center Tree roars. The sound made my ears shrivel. A sound only heard in the darkest pits of the underworld. Branches and roots explode, purple light flowing out of them. The bark of the tree twists and rips itself apart. Tiny holes open everywhere, energy bursting out of them. The Center Tree is slowly ripped apart by Dem’s energy. Inside in hollow parts of the tree lie humans, plants growing on or in them. The infesters are dissolved by the energy. The humans wake up with confused looks on their faces. They clamber down from their dens in the tree, walking around and confusedly greeting each other. I could have saved Dem, but I also knew that I made the right choice. I walk over to Dem. His body lies on the ground, motionless. All of a sudden, his form is sucked up into the swords, leaving no trace that he ever stood there. Then I have an idea. I run over to Iris and tell her, “Dem’s soul is stuck in the swords. We need to destroy them.”

                      “My swords? No!”

“Remember what he did to Swampy? He set his soul free. We need to free Dem’s soul too.”

“What about the humans?” she asks.

“With the Center Tree destroyed, the forest will die. They are safe,” I answer. That night we bring the swords to a stone. I light a fire. “This won’t destroy the swords, but it might help Dem,” I say. We put them on the fire. They spark up to life, and blue energy pours out of them I see Dem in the air. He mouths the words, ”Thank you,” and flies up into the night sky. I know that I will never see Dem again, but I also know that I did the right thing by saving the humans, even though it was hard. I went back to the clearing with Iris. We rallied the people together and told them to be calm. We have a chance to start a new world. To start over, and make a new government so the people will live in peace, not in war. The end has come for the U.U.R. and now it is time for a new beginning.

Part 2 is complete! I really hope you like it. By the way, sorry about that brief introduction. The story was too many words, so I had to cut out the part where Swampy dies. Sorry about that.
