A black shadow moved through the slums of a town. Mud covered everything in sight, including the man's boots. He, of course, didn't care and kept his dark brown eyes on his target. A wealthy merchant traveling to the docks. Perhaps to see if his products were ready to ship, or were here to be sold. It didn't matter to the figure. The only thing that mattered was the payment he was going to be getting once he returned the man's hand to the person who hired him to do this.

Taking careful, well-measured strides, the black shadow half-clung to the darkness the close-built houses made; no matter how crudely built they may be. Turn into an alley so I can steal your life away, he thought, anxious to get on with this. Then he stopped short and snorted softly. Anxiety was not something he was used to feeling, but this was new and he welcomed the small experience before banishing it away.

Then, as if his thought had been planted into the fat merchant's mind, the wealthy man turned his struggling horse down a small alley that was a sort of short cut to the docks. The shadowed man smirked, his lips twisting his face into an evil glower before he slipped in behind the merchant as he slowly unsheathed one curved dagger. The alley way was small only because it was a couple yards until it opened up again. It was wide enough to have crates piled up in levels and he smiled when he saw those.

How generous, he thought with a smile that once again made him look like he was glowering. With ease, he hopped up on the boxes; barely making a noise. But as he stopped at the top one, the fat, wealthy merchant was now level with him (his horse had obviously refused to go any further since its hooves were firmly planted in the ground) and the shadowed man whistled softly.

But as the merchant turned his head to the shadowed man, the shadowed man struck; swiping his blade against the pudgy jowls. The sharpened edge cut easily through the fat to the large vein hiding beneath. Blood spurted from the wound and the merchant fell backwards off the horse. The animal had enough sense to give a startled nicker and move forward slightly; dancing away from the bleeding out body.

The shadowed man acted fast. Wiping the blood of his curved dagger, he sheathed it before bringing out another. This one, straight as a sword. Jumping off the boxes, he landed easily beside the dieing merchant; his cloak fluttering down behind him. This time, he smiled as he watched the light go out of his eyes before moving to slice of the man's hand at the wrist. Though, it took a few solid slices to get the damned thing off. Making sure the man's insignia ring was around his pinkie, the shadowed man wrapped the dismembered hand in a dirty rag and placed it into a hidden compartment in his cloak. Then, he wiped off this dagger, sheathed it, and was gone in an instant.

An upper class woman exited a building near the docks. While mounting a dapple colored horse, she thought about taking the alleyway since it was a lot shorter but decided otherwise and continued on to take the long way. As soon as she made it around, the woman heard many shrieks and cries.

The woman pulled up her hood from the dark cloak she was wearing to hide her face. Knowing that blood of a well known merchant had been spilled, there was bound to be knights sent to investigate and clean up the mess. She didn't need or want to be caught missing for too long.

Wonderful. I have to return early due to another's careless crime. The woman gently tapped her heels against the horses sides to make him dash. She was in a hurry to get away. In a last minute decision, she turned the reigns in the direction of the woods. The woman knew them well enough to hide and navigate. After she decided it was a far enough distance, she dismounted and went to rest against a tree. Speaking to the air she said," It has been a long day..."

The shadowed man made it to the lower city market before he heard screams and cries coming from the direction of the docks. Apparently, somebody found the de-handed merchant in the alley. Not his probably since nobody saw him commit the act. Except for the horse, who couldn't speak the human tongue. The dead man was obviously dead and couldn't talk about who had killed him. With another grin that appeared a glower, the male shifted through the market crowds with ease before slipping into another alley. This time, it was narrow and longer than the other one. Brown eyes narrowed somewhat before he moved down it.

He stopped at a plain wooden door. Facing it, he glanced to his right. Nobody was watching. He glanced towards his left. Nobody had followed. A smirk curved his lips this time and he knocked thrice on the door. Paused. Knocked thrice more. Paused again before rapping his knuckles once more on the wooden door. As he lowered his hand back to his side, the door opened up to reveal a haggard older man. But the shadowed man could tell it was all an act and that this man was the man who hired him to kill the fat merchant.

"You got the hand," the man whisper-asked. Blue eyes wide as he glanced from side to side, making sure that the shadowed man was not followed or watched. It amused the male under the cowl to see this other man's so palpable fear of being caught. After all, this man was the fat merchants rival in terms of their success for goods. Nonetheless, the shadowed man nodded once and the rival merchant backed up, allowing the man in black to entered the building.

He did and once the door closed behind him, the male pulled out the bag that held the dismembered hand before tossing it at the merchant as the other male walked closer to the wooden table and chair set. The merchant juggled it in his hands a moment before loosening the strings and shifting the rag to see that it was the hand he specified. The golden signet ring glittered in the firelight.

"Good, good. Your payment, Mr..." the merchant said, trailing off. He had tossed the shadowed-man a small leather bag and in jingled faintly when the male caught in with one hand.

"Ayk," the shadowed male responded. His voice a low rumbled in his chest. He loosed the strings on the back to check to see if the correct amount was in the leather pouch before he tightened the strings and slipped the bag into a sewn-in pouch in the scarf of his cloak. "Just Ayk. No 'mister' business or nothing. I ain't a mister." He turned towards the door again, one hand on the handle when he paused and glanced over his shoulder. "Nice doin' business with ya, Merchant." Then, he slipped out of the building and made his way back into the crowds before that merchant could form a single word.

The woman pulled her hood back and pulled out the ties that restrained her long blonde hair. She sighed as her hair fell past her shoulders. The woman began mocking her advisers and said in a high squeaky pitched voice," My lady Catherine..." and she mumbled on about what they instructed her to do. Catherine didn't like not being able to live life as she saw fit but there was not much she could do other than sneak to town on her own occasionally.

Picking the ties of the ground and tying her hair back, she brushed herself off and remounted her horse. Catherine allowed him to trot at his own pace back down the trail. It didn't take long because she didn't travel very far. Near the end of the trail, she dismounted.

Catherine assumed if she walked with her horse, rather than ride him, then she could blend more easily with everyone else. She walked with a quick pace to avoid those who may recognize her. Unfortunately, Catherine made it a bit too obvious she was trying to hide something but , on the bright side, regular lower class people wouldn't be very aware of it.

She wasn't one for great hiding skills. The only thing that kept her from being caught be the knights was remembering where her father kept them posted. This time though, Catherine wasn't sure which way to go because they'd be swarming here soon to see if they could attempt to track down who committed the crime. "Great,'' she muttered to herself.

Alrighty. I just didn't know at first.

Well, what if Ayk gets captured by the guard and taken before the king for his crime. He's put in jail while the whole thing is being sorted out and he meets your char.

That would work.
Perhaps Catherine could also be caught outside the castle at the same time? ^^
