Dan spent all of his morning classes trying to get Paradise out of his mind, but he just couldn't. No matter what he tried, his thoughts always wandered back to how hurt she had looked, and how if she had been lying, he'd just broken her heart. He couldn't help but think about her, and he began to wonder if he was perhaps going insane.
Finally, though, the bell for lunch rang. He was the first up out of his seat and he headed straight for his locker, dumping his books into it and deciding to give lunch a miss today as he headed outside.
Once out of the doors, he took a fleeting glance to the tree where he had spoken to Paradise. She was there with one of her friends now, and he smiled. At least she didn't seem to be bogged down in pointless thoughts.
Walking on, he headed to the wall at the end of the yard, sitting down against it and glancing up. For once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been, and there you will long to return.
Dan looked down again. The man who had said that probably never knew just how true it was, just how much Dan desperately wanted to stay flying forever. Especially now.
Still, there was no point being a coward and hiding from everything. Dan grew bored, and decided to call a bird to him again. Giving a few simple whistles that imitated the calls of quite a few species of bird perfectly, he held out his hand, palm up, as a bird flew down.
It wasn't a bird of prey this time, but a small nightingale, with soft brown feathers and a sweet song. It perched on his hand and tilted it's head to one side, watching him, and whistling back.
To some, it may have looked like the human and bird were having a conversation, but all Dan was doing was copying exacty what the bird did.
Well now. I should... Probably put something intelligent here. At some point. Eventually.

After about five minutes of Ashley babbling on about a guy that she didn't even know the name of, I couldn't contain the suspense. I had to know if it was Dan.
And, just as Dan walked outside, I could see the brightness in Ashley's pretty blue eyes.
"That's him, Paradise. That's him!"
The thing about Ashley was, she lived with her heart on her sleeve. As in, she let her emotions show and her affection easy to get. And, I could tell she was saying it loud enough to get Dan's attention. Like she wanted Dan to know.
I rolled my eyes, my cheeks turning a bright red. Thank God he didn't hear or acknowledge her.
But, it hurt to realize that he didn't acknowledge me either.
"You mean... Dan?"
I said, trying to act happy for my friend, and not hurt. With Ashley's beautiful complexion, and wavy blond hair, she was a shoe in for Dan's heart.
Oh, what was I thinking? Why should I even care?
With one sad sigh, I couldn't help but have my gaze shift over to him as Ashley babbled more about him. He was holding a bird, and I could hear his chirping all the way over here.
Look at me, Dan...
I sighed, turning my head before he could.
"...Should I go over there?"
I heard Ashley through the midst of my own thoughts. I blinked, surprised.
"To sit with Dan?"
Ashley's ex
pression portrayed how elated she really was about the idea. I sure wasn't.
"Yeah!"
And before I could give her advice, or just tell her to not go, Ashley was up and walking smoothly over to him without one gesture of being nervous. Completely opposite of how I was when I was with him. Maybe that was why he wasn't really attracted to me.

Ashley didn't wait for an invitation before she put her blond hair behind her ear and batted her blue eyes as she sat next to Dan.
"Hi. I'm Ashley. You're Dan, right?"

Dan barely acknowledged Ashley's presence at first, glancing at her only fleetingly. Giving a last, low chirp, he lifted his hand up and smiled softly as the small bird previously sat there took off and flew through the sky, still singing it's heart out. He loved the sound of bird song.
Turning his head the barest fraction to look at the person who had just decided to sit next to him, he decided that she looked like a moron. Besides, how did she know his name? Paradise had probably told her. Which meant... Had they been talking about him? [lololol he's so naive. |D]
He ignored how she batted her eyelashes like some idiot. What did she think she was achieving?
''Correct. My name is Dankaylan, but yes, people do call me Dan.'' He doubted this moron could even pronounce his full name, let alone remember it.
Glancing back up at the sky, he watched birds of all different sizes flitting around above him. They really were beautiful; the area around the school seemed to have a lot of birds for some reason.
He spotted the same bird of prey from the last day, and smiled. It was a majestic bird, the rightful king of the sky in that area. It was the biggest thing up there, after all... At least, most of the time.
Well now. I should... Probably put something intelligent here. At some point. Eventually.

Ashley said, her eyes bright, seductive. She didn't seem to be a success in seducing though, seeing as Dan only gave her one glance.
"That's a great name. What does it mean?"
She asked as she flipped her hair off her shoulder and leaned in a little closer.
"Aren't you afraid of a bird giving you rabies?"
She asked as she watched the bird fly away from his grasp.
"Or, you're probably not afraid they'd bite you. Seeing as you're hands..."
She started before grasping one of his hands.
"... Are so gentle."

Dan didn't look at Ashley again, even when he spoke to her. ''Nothing.'' He said, glancing at her only briefly before looking back towards the sky.
''It means absoloutely nothing.''
When she grasped hold of his hand, he merely looked at her, his eyes betraying no emotion. He was beginning to get a little bored, so gave the hawk call again.
''No, I am not afraid of a bird giving me rabies. People can give you worse diseases than birds can.'' He stated, watching as the hawk circled overhead for a moment, cautious.
''I am not afraid of them biting me simpy because they have no reason to. If I harm one, it will bite, no matter how 'gently' I hold it after that.''
He held out his arm- the one she wasn't holding- as the bird swooped down. It landed with it's claws grasped around his forearm, but it wasn't holding on as tightly as it had been the last day, so there was no blood.

I could feel a lump form in my throat as I watched Ashley grab Dan's hand from where I was sitting. And I had to hold my breath as I waiting for his reaction.
None came.
Was he enjoying her touch? Like guys usually did... Or was he really that oblivious to what she was trying to accomplish?
"I can't watch this anymore..."
I mumbled to myself as I tore my eyes away from the two and got up from where I was sitting. Lunch wasn't nearly close to done yet, so I have no idea where I'd go. But, I'd hide somewhere.
Like the library. Kids didn't go there. And, Ashley was busy anyways, so I my as well find a new novel to read.
Feeling a little relieved that I had a plan of getting away, I brought the rest of my lunch and walked quickly inside the building; trying to not bring attention to myself by being as nonchalant as possible.

Ashley shot Dan a flirty smile but leaned away as the hawk landed on his arm. But, she didn't let go of his hand. Instead, she rubbed her thumb against his, and chose to keep the conversation going instead of taking the hint that he wasn't interested.
"So... Seeing as you were sitting all by yourself, I'm guessing you haven't made any friends yet?"

[[Lol. Dan's so gonna mess this up for poor Paradise. |D]] Dan chose to ignore Ashley for the most part, not bothering to look at her again. What she was doing was so obvious, it struck him as slightly pathetic. Who did she think she was?
''Actually, I have. I simply have not had the chance to see her today, but I would like to have done. She's so far the only student in this school that I've met who isn't either a trash-talking bimbo or a show-off.'' He said simply, his voice flat.
He pulled his hand out of her grasp to reach up and stroke the bird's forehead, causing it to lean forward and spread it's wings out wide behind it, gripping his arm more tightly.

Ashley did a low giggle, trying to at least get more attention from Dan then the bird was getting.
"Really? Well, seeing as this 'girl' isn't around, why don't you just stay with me today? You know... In case you get lost."
She said, a twinkle in her eyes by the end of her statement.

''I'd rather not.'' Dan replied, lifting his arm up and watching as the bird flew away before standing up himself.
''I don't get lost easily, and I enjoy being alone to think. I have... a lot to think about lately.'' He continued, looking at her again for the first time in a while.
''Perhaps another time.'' He finished, giving her a warm smile so she wouldn't feel too rejected, before turning and heading for the doors to the school.

Ashley frowned as she watched Dan go inside. For a while, she began having doubts that he didn't even like her. But then she realized that he could be playing hard-to-get.
"Fine, Dankaylan. You're lucky I like a challenge."
She whispered to herself as she watched him walk inside. And he was so worth that challenge.
[[Wanna time skip to after school, or should Paradise and Dan run into each other to make things awkward? :DDD ]]

It was easy to hide in the school library, mostly because my mind completely forgot about my troubles by all the books that were on the shelves. It was like my own little heaven hidden in a school room.
I frowned when I heard the bell ring. After giving the librarian my library card, and keeping two books that I found, I left the library, hesitantly. Hoping not to run into them.
Ashley saw me the second she walked inside, and waved excitedly. She skipped over to me before saying,
"He's SO into me, Paradise. You can just see it in the way he treated me." (LOL.)
My stomach dropped at her words. And, I knew that running into my heaven wouldn't soothe the pain in my heart. So I chose not to run back to the library and hide forever like I would have liked.
"Oh, really?"
I forced myself to respond. If I didn't, she'd know something was up. Well... Maybe not. She tends to be in her own little world, never really caring about others troubles. But, overall, she was still a good friend.
"Yes! Gosh, he so wants me. Too bad I don't have any more classes with him today. Art. Speaking of which, I gotta go before Miss King says I'm tardy again."
She made a disgusted look after talking about her dreadful class and walked away. I waved lazily, still wishing I could find a box and hide under it forever.
I quickly found my books and went to my next class. My assigned seat was in the back, fortunately next to a window. Something to keep my mind off my hurt. As I sat down, the teacher walked in. Greeting the students. I did a small, "Good afternoon..." But other then that, I kept my eyes on the window.
The hawk that had came to Dan just Friday afternoon at lunch was sitting on a tree, watching me through the window. I smirked a little at the memory, though quickly covered my face. Trying to get back to reality.
I didn't claim him. And, he wasn't mine. And he never showed any interest anyways. So, why did I feel so betrayed at the fact that he was into Ashley?
"Paradise, focus please."
I heard my teacher say. I deserved that. Seeing as my head was in my hands right in front of him.
"Sorry."
I muttered before leaning back and trying to concentrate. But, soon, my eyes drifted over to the hawk.
Still watching me.

Dan wandered over to his locker and got his books, before heading down to his next class. Biology.
If his memory was correct, he shared a class with Paradise then, and that wasn't something he was looking forward to.
Ignoring everyone and everything on his way there, he slipped into the classroom and headed down to the back of the class. He saw Paradise next to the window, and chose to sit on the opposite side of the room, but still in the same row as her.
He dropped his books onto the desk, ignoring the bang they made as they fell, and ignored the teacher when he walked in, too.
He ran a hand through his hair, looking at the wall. Trying his best not to look in the direction his heart so badly wanted him to.
''Dankeelan Tilosky, you might find you'll learn more if you actually pay attention.'' Dan looked up to see that the teacher was at his desk, and had apparently been talking to him.
''Whatever...'' He replied absent-mindedly, not bothering to keep his gaze on the teacher, looking at the wall instead.
''Dankeelan! I will not tell you again!''
Dan looked up once more to glare at the teacher, before rolling his eyes. ''What? It's not like you're even teaching anything I don't know already.'' He didn't even know what it was they were learning, but was in too bad of a mood to care.
''Really? I suppose you're an expert ornithologist then, correct? Well, we've just learned some record-holders, that I'm sure you already know. How about informing the class on the smallest bird in the world?''
Dan smirked. It really was his dumb luck that they were having a class about birds. ''The smallest bird in general is the male bee hummingbird, which is about 2.75 inches in length. Smallest birds of prey are the black-legged and white-fronted falconets, which are both about six inches long. Anything else?''
Dan was actually beginning to quite enjoy the look of confusion on his teacher's face, but it was hard to enjoy anything with Paradise right there.
''Ah... No, that's all.''

Soooo, not to be even more cliche then I already am, maybe to get Dan and Paradise feeling awkward, the teacher can assign a project of some sort, and he assigns Paradise and Dan together? Maybe some project about birds, I dunno D: ]]
