He pointed to one of the cymbals and a medium sized drum, saying that they were the ones she'd use.
''You count to four in your head, then step on the pedal. Then you hit the snare drum twice, and the cymbals once. So it's kinda like one- step on the pedal- two- snare drum- three- snare drum- four- cymbals. It's in four-four time, which is the basic rhythm everyone goes by everyday, drummer or not.'' He grinned, then moved out of the way and motioned for her to start.
''Count out loud if you want, count in your head, it doesn't matter- just make sure you count.''

As I watched Dan - for once, I was watching him play, not just staring at him. - I realized that he made any beat look easy. So when it was my turn, I knew it would be harder. I grabbed the sticks, counted the beat once in my head, before whispering it to myself as I tried doing the beat. It wasn't pitiful, but I could have done better. I put a hand up with the stick still in my hand, before Dan could say anything.
"Sh. Let me try again."
Hey, I couldn't help it if I was a perfectionist. The next time I tried, I made sure it was perfect before looking back up at him.

''Brilliant. You're really quick to catch on, y'know that?'' He laughed again, leaning over her shoulder and using his own drumsticks to show her the exact same beat, doubled in speed.
''Now we're in two-four time. You only count to two, and each beat has half as much rhythmical value. So, it'll go-'' He started playing in time to his counting, ''- one, base drum, snare drum, two, snare drum, cymbals.''
He grinned again, then stepped back once more. ''Do it again.''

The faster beat was way harder, even if Dan made it look easy. I guessed the only reason why I doubted I could do the beat as well as he did was because the whole time while he showed me how it was... I was just thinking about how close we were. My palms became wet with nervous sweat and I grabbed my drum sticks more tightly. "Uh... Show me again."
The words were said the second he backed away. Anything to get him closer.

He stepped forward again and leaned over her shoulder, speaking and playing at the same time.
''Just like the first time, but with every count, you play two beats. One- base drum, snare drum- Two- snare drum, cymbals, and then you just repeat.'' He played and said it a few more times, before stepping back again.
''Have a go; it doesn't matter if it's wrong.''

Even though I knew it was only because he was talking over my shoulder, he wasn't trying to make me a mess, I still enjoyed it. "Okay." I whispered, mostly because I lost my breath when he backed away again. I tried it, and this time it was the pitiful performance I was worried about. "Ugh." The irritated grunt came out before I tried again. Even worse.

He smiled, then wandered over to his bed and sat down, looking out of the window. It was starting to darken a little, but was still light. About five o'clock, he guessed, maybe a little later.
''Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly?'' He asked softly, not sure why he was asking. Maybe he was just curious to see what other people would think flying was like, to see if anyone got anywhere near describing the incredibly breath-taking experience.
It was why he loved to do it so much, and he just wanted to see what Paradise thought of it. He remained gazing out of the window, watching birds flit through the skies.

I immediately took the chance to not look stupid with playing the drums by getting up and sitting next to him on the edge of the bed. "Well... I guess. I mean, when I was little and believe in 'super' powers. Yeah. Flying was my favorite one." I looked away from the window and back at Dan.
"Is that why you like birds? Because you wonder about... Flying?"

Dan smiled. Just how much of what he was capable of was considered a 'super power'? Shifting, flying, breathing fire... She would think he was taking the micky if he ever did tell her, anyway.
It was funny. He didn't wonder, really. He knew.

I smiled as I listened to Dan. What passion he had for birds. Sometimes I thought it was more then passion, the way he spoke of it, looked at them... Even talked to them, if you would consider 'bird calling' that. "And, the closest thing we have to flying is paragliding."
I said with a small laugh.

''Nah. Paragliding is nothing like the real thing.'' He stopped, realizing he'd probably said too much. Maybe he sounded weird, but it didn't matter. She'd have to be pretty weird herself to suspect anything of that.
''I mean, I imagine it'd be more... More... controlled. But less so at the same time, if that makes any sense at all.'' He was quiet, watching the birds out the window. They were speckled warblers; he always did like those birds, even if they were small. They were smart as hell, all things considered.

Dan laughed. Well, this was unexpected. He shook his head, lying back on the bed, folding his arms behind his head.
''Nah, not really. It's not amazing, what I do. Weird and slightly worrying, maybe, but not amazing.'' He paused for a moment, wondering how to explain it.
''I guess I just don't want to miss anything, y'know? Life's short. Beauty is in every moment, every breath of the wind, every drop of the rain... You just gotta know how to look. If you know how to look, you're fine.''
He was quiet after that, staring at his ceiling a moment or so longer before sitting up.
''Besides, if anyone's amazing, it's you for putting up with me.''

When I had left Dan's house that night, I was feeling way better then I felt that morning. There was something about Dan that could make anyone feel good, Even the high maintenance, Ashley. I smiled at the memory as I sat in my first period class - that he wasn't in. Ashley was in his class though, and I had a moment to wonder what she would tell me today about Dan.
I rolled my eyes at the thought before the bell rang. I had my next class with him, (I think.) and maybe I will be the one saying something about Dan today, to her. I was the first to leave the class, as soon as the teacher dismissed us.
