Dan wanted desperately to tell her that his one and only dream was to know who his parents were. Know what he was. ''I don't know. I guess I don't have any.'' He said instead. He couldn't tell her about his parents, not when she thought they were the reason for his travelling.

I shook my head.
"You beat the whole class. You tell me that's perfectly human?"
After a moment of silence, as I started trying to put pieces in my head together, I turned my head to face him - and that was when I realized how close our heads were - and said,
"There is something different about you, Dan. There really is."
I stared into his eyes for a long while; trying to figure it out.

I was starting to like the little distance between us until he said that. I laughed and nudged him a little bit.

Hopefully he'd find some friends soon. It seemed like he was by himself mostly, except for me.

I asked with a smile to show that I was teasing. I looked up in the same direction he was looking at, before looking back at him. If he was right about not having an ego; he was one heck of a guy. I smiled and quickly looked away so he didn't think I was staring at him.

Making a call, exactly like a hawks, sharp and clear, he held his breath as it dove down and landed on a thick branch above their heads, peering down at them curiously.
