Sethera blinked yellow eyes when she bolted towards the stable entrance. She was sure excited, he said to himself as he followed at a slower pace. Once he reached the entrance, he leaned against the frame and crossed his arms against his chest as he watched her lavish one stallion with attention. The others watched and the yellow-eyed boy was pretty sure he felt jealousy in their minds.
How dare she give him attention and totally ignore the rest of us!?
They seemed to tell him... Well, through the emotions he was getting from them.
"Knox. I think the other horses are a bit jealous at the moment," he commented softly.

"Jealous?" Knox repeated. She continued to stroke the gray horse's head. He snorted and ran the whiskers on his mouth over her face. She kept her hand on his head and turned around to Seth. Her smile immediately dropped when she saw every other horse in their stalls had stopped to watch her. How would she explain this one? Horses didn't do this with humans. Goodness, she was such an idiot.
"I--they probably do that all the time," she said nonchalantly and waved it off. Despite her trouble-free ex pression, her heart had started to beat twice as fast and worry clouded out her other emotions. She finished petting the gray stallion and walked down the other stalls, holding out her hands to pet each of the horses.
"Do they let you ride?" she asked. She didn't want him to ask why the hell they were all acting so strange.

Sethera nodded slightly when she repeated that one, singular word. But, he doubted she saw it as she turned to see the rest of the horses with jealousy on their minds. He snorted when she nonchalantly waved it off as something they usually did.
Horses never did this with normal people.
Nor did cat's worry about their owners.
And bats did not fly around during the day.
Though, he was still questioning himself if he saw her eyes change colours at least twice. But, then again, he knew what he saw. Though doubts were still running through his mind as he followed Knox at a slower rate as she went deeper into the stables.
"Yea. There is a tack room a few stalls down on your left," he replied.

Knox continued down the stalls. She put her hands down by her sides and looked down at the ground as she passed the last of the horses in hopes that the great beasts would start to ignore her. Those were sorrowfully dashed as one of the mares tossed her head and smacked one hoof against her stall door. Knox tripped in surprise and almost smacked down on the ground.
She righted herself from the stumble at the last moment and swung around to face the horse, finger raised at it in frustration. Her mouth had opened, frustration bubbling over; she was about to tell the animal off. "Stop it. All of you, just stop it," she said. The effect was immediate. Each and every horse either turned its head away and moved away from their stall doors.
Without looking at Sethera, she opened the door to the tack room. It slammed accidentally on her way in by a slightly harder than needed push. Knox forced herself down onto a tack box and buried her face in her hands. Why is this so hard?

Sethera was very surprised when all the horse's emotions turned away from yearning to get attention to that they couldn't care less about the human female in the center of the stables. Quirking one brow up, he half-followed her into the tack room, only to pause slightly when he saw her sitting down on the tack box through the screen door.
Biting the inside of his mouth, he hung back slightly and turned his back to the door, giving Knox some space since it looked like she wanted it.

There really was no use in pretending she wasn't a freak. That's about all Knox summed up while Sethera gave her some room to breathe. The thought actually made her chest feel lighter, her muscles less tense. Sure she couldn't really exactly confide to anyone that she was a monster incarnate, something out of fairy tales (to mortals anyway). Sure she would never really be able to have close friends, save for Beau. She could still accept her differentness.
Knox grabbed a bridle where it hung from a nail hammered into the wall. Shouldering that, she opened up the door. "Sorry," she said as she accidentally bumped into him. "So Seth, have you ever ridden bareback?" she asked and held the bridle up to him.

Sethera jerked forward suddenly, his own thoughts disturbed when he heard her apology. Turning around to face her, he instead took a glance at the bridle. Bareback? He shook his head. In fact, he hardly ever rode a horse. He was always nervous when he was astride one.
With wide yellow eyes, Sethera shook his head in a negative. "No..." he said faintly.

"No? Well, you're about to," Knox said. She decided to go back to the first horse she had seen, the one she'd fawned over. Upon her approach, his large gray head swung around and pushed through his stall door. Knox pressed a hand against his slender snout and forced him backward so she could pop the latch and slide the door open. Knox stepped into the stall and stopped, leaned back so she could read the name on the stall. "Ajax," she read aloud. The horse's ears perked up at the sound of his name.
He nibbled on the bit as Knox slid the bridle over his ears. The fluid movement of getting the horse all tacked up came right back to her. She grabbed a brush that was hanging outside of his stall and cleaned off his back so he'd be more comfortable with his riders. Hanging the brush back up and grabbing Ajax by his reins, Knox walked him out of his stall. "Don't toss us alright boy? You can trust me," she mumbled. Ajax dipped his head in a nod, tail swishing as Knox led him to where Sethera stood.
Knox tossed Ajax's reins back over his neck. The horse clapped his hoof against the ground impatiently while Knox dragged a tack box next to him. She fisted her fingers in his mane and hoisted herself up. He danced forward a bit and Knox grabbed his reins to steady him. The blonde then held out a hand for Seth and raised one brow. "You can trust me," she said.

What!?
Sethera felt a little queasy inside. So he was going to be riding bareback on a horse with a girl he barely knew and he barely knew how to ride. Period. With unsure eyes, he watched as she lead the gray stallion back towards him. Though, he unconsciously edged a bit to one side when he took in the huge horse.
Uh...
"You can trust me."
Its not like he didn't trust her. He didn't trust the horse. But with a gulp, he grasped a hold of her outstretched hand and hauled himself up behind her. It felt all weird to sit astride a horse. He'd rather be on Zakeru's motorcycle.

"You're squeezing his sides too much," Knox said to Sethera without even looking at his legs. The horse's sense of being uncomfortable had reached her mind when Sethera had settled and she'd just voiced it, like old habits. And you know what they say: old habits die hard. She didn't notice her mistake and instead swiveled around to grab Sethera's arms. His pulse beat underneath her fingertips and she froze, kept staring straight at his chest as she fought off a wave of nausea.
Smiling weakly, Knox forced herself to turn back around. She took Sethera's hands and placed them on her hips. "Wrap your arms around my waist or you'll fall off," she instructed as she grabbed Ajax's reins. When she lightly tapped his sides with the heel of her shoes, Ajax snorted and obeyed. He walked forward and, once clearing the stables, Knox clicked her tongue and pushed him into a trot.
He was being good up until he turned his head to the side and looked at Knox with one big black eye. Inside the black depths was a sense of playfulness, teasing, that Knox would understand. "Hold on," she warned Sethera as Ajax reared. His front hooves beat at the air before slamming back down onto the ground. His body jerked as he took off into a canter, and then a gallop.
Nice experience for his first time riding a horse...Knox thought.

He could sense the horse's feeling of being uncomfortable and loosened the hold his legs held on the beast's sides. Then, he was startled at the way she suddenly turned around to grasp at his arms. Blinking yellow eyes in bewilderment, he nodded and did just that. Pulling himself a bit closer to her back as he did so.
Walking out of the stables, Sethera tilted his head somewhat. So far so good. At least he didn't have this fear of falling off the stallion. But all too soon, Knox urged him into a trot and the boy tightened his hold on her waist slightly.
"Hold on"
Her voice suddenly came to him a second before the horse reared up on its hind-legs. He could feel himself slipping a little and tightened his hold on her a little more. Sh!t, sh!t, sh!t! went through his mind as the stallion came back down before taking off at a canter before shifting gears into a gallop.
This was not fun.
Not fun at all...

Knox gripped the reins tighter in her hands and tried to ignore how hard Sethera was squeezing her waist. Her legs pressed against Ajax's sides as his body heaved, head tilting downward and coming back up as he galloped onward. Grass kicked up from his shoes, a cloud of dust trailing after them. Knox's hair streamed out behind her, which was probably smacking Sethera in the face. The ride wasn't too tough for Knox, as she knew how to move with the horse.
By the time she got Ajax to slow down by tugging gently on his reins, they'd gone near the outskirts of the campus. A tethering post next to some benches was under a covering of shade from the nearby trees. Knox walked Ajax up to the post and patted his neck, murmuring soft sweet things into his ear while she did. She slid off of his back and wrapped the reins around the post, then looked up at Sethera.
"That was fun, wasn't it?" she said.
Knox turned around and sat down on one of the benches. "So I'm guessing the students ride their horses out here," Knox said. "It's peaceful."

Sethera loosened his hold on Knox's waist when she slowed the stallion down through his paces. When she slid off with feminine ease, Sethera slipped off awkwardly before laying down on the ground with a groan. His legs were bent at the knee so his feet were flat on the ground and one arm covered his yellow eyes.
"Define "fun" to me please," Sethera mumbled before glancing at her as she sat down on one of the many benches. He shrugged slightly. "Some do. Others like to race."

"I take it you don't race," Knox said. She swung her legs over the dirt before stepping back onto the ground to walk back up to Seth. Standing right next to him, she had to tilt her head to the side to look at him properly. Knox nudged his arm with one shoe and raised a brow. "It wasn't that bad," she said.
"So what do you want to do now?"

Sethera shook his head. He didn't race and he didn't ride. He just groomed the magnificent beasts when they were done being ridden by the students. And his riding of this gray stallion was so bad, he could almost hear Zakeru laughing at him about it. But his older cousin was in class an nowhere near the two of them.
"Dunno. What else do you want to see?" the yellow-eyed boy asked.

Knox decided to give up on getting him up on his feet and sat back down on the bench. A leaf had fallen on the wood and she absentmindedly picked it up and ran the thing across her knuckles. "I don't know really. It's not like I'm going to be coming back here," she said. She blinked. "I mean...yeah, I probably won't be coming back." A shrug and Knox looked down at the leaf again with a frown.
It's only a matter of time before one side wins out and I can't be around people after that anyway, she thought crossly to herself. She dropped the leaf with a huff and rested her fidgety hands on her knees.

Sethera removed his arm from his eyes and tilted his head slightly so he looked at her upside-down. His brows were furrowed with confusion. "Why do you say that?" he asked, tilting his head to the right. He probably looked extremely awkward. But he didn't care. Besides, this was a good time to ask a few questions.
"Is it because of the way your cat seems to be worrying about you?" He paused slightly before asking slowly, choosing his words with care, "Or because your eyes change colours?"

Knox almost fell off of her bench seat in utter shock when Sethera spoke again. "They don't change color," she said with a trembling voice. Her brows dipped down in forced anger, while inside she was panicking. "And Beau is Beau. Some animals care about their owners a lot more than others," she said accusingly. Knox swallowed in the silence that followed. A high-pitched squeak came from a treetop above them. Knox leaned to the side and craned her head back to look into the trees.
A bat was pressed against the bark of the tree, red eyes glaring down at Knox. To look at it, Knox leaned back so far in fact, she ended up losing her balance and sliding off of the bench and onto the ground. Her legs stayed on the wooden bench and Knox winced as she smacked her lower back. "Ow," she said and turned to look at Sethera.
"So what if my eyes change color and my cat doesn't act like a cat anyway? I'm different, that's all."

Sethera scoffed slightly and rolled over so he was on his stomach before pushing himself up to his feet. Walking over to her, he loosely crossed his arms against his chest. "Small eye colour changes are rather normal. Hazel to a green-ish and back again. But gray to crimson? In what known universe does that exist?" he asked, yellow eyes paling somewhat as they tightened into a slight glare.
