"This one," Knox snapped before she could stop herself. So much for pretending that hadn't happened. "You're one to talk. Humans shouldn't have yellow eyes," she said. Trying to look like she had a little dignity, Knox rolled onto her stomach and got back up to her feet. She brushed dirt off of her back while her cheeks flushed red. Because she was angry or embarrassed, there really was no way to tell.

The bat squeaked again up in the trees. Knox whirled around, bent over to grab a rock, and lobbed it at the animal. It missed by about four feet but the attempt was enough to startle the thing and made it flutter over to another tree. A sickening feeling settled in Knox's stomach. She was almost ninety-nine percent positive that that bat was one of her father's familiars. If Sethera was getting too...inquisitive for her father's tastes, it could bring a world of pain to the boy.

"Look, if you know what's good for you, be quiet and get back on the horse," she said and stalked past him to mount Ajax.

Humans?

"You speak as if you weren't one," he said as he turned to follow her movements back to Ajax. It was true. But his eye colour was a result of some weird genetic mutation. This was the second time anyways. And besides, he was done questioning things. He wanted some answers.

Knox's face paled and Ajax stumbled back when she tugged too hard on the reins. Sethera clearly wasn't going to get on the horse, not when he was standing there expecting her to explain. The bat squeaked again and Knox looked up in time to see it detach itself from the tree and fly over their heads. It continued across the field until Knox couldn't see it anymore.

She visibly relaxed but her brows had turned down in confusion. Why would her father's familiar leave like that? "Now you're just speaking crazy talk," Knox said when she looked back at Sethera. "Now get on Ajax before I leave you here."

His pale yellow eyes narrowed further into their glare. He could feel her slight panic when he saw her face pale. The panic eased and confusion mingled in with the emotion as she watched something, but he didn't know what. Nor did he want to know.

"I am not talking crazy, Knox," he said. "I know what I've seen, heard, and felt. And believe me. I've never seen somebody look at me like I was some delicious morsel."

Caught up in Knox's whirling emotions, Ajax ended up rearing. Knox grasped the reins tightly and clung on for dear life. When the horse touched the ground again, Knox slid off of him and fisted her hands by her sides. Revulsion snaked through Knox when Sethera compared her to her father. "I did not look at you like that. I will never look at anyone like that," she said, words carrying a low growl.

Knox's gray eyes turned glassy and she looked away with a scowl, angry at herself as the tears threatened to spill. "Are you afraid I'll hurt you? Is that it? Because I won't," she said. "Can we please go back now?" Knox looked down at the ground, shoulders slumping in defeat. "I'm probably just going to pull out of school again anyway, okay?" In an undertone, she mumbled, "I knew this wouldn't work."

Sethera cocked one brow. "Oh really," the gesture seemed to say. 'Cause he was pretty sure she looked at him like that before he suggested he show her the stables. Or was it after? Oh well, but he sure as hell recognized that look anywhere.

"I'm not afraid of me getting hurt. It happens all the time. And explain to me why you would get pulled out, Knox. Since you are giving me more questions than answers, and I am not fond of that ratio all together," he said, tilting his head down somewhat.

"Lemme tell ya' what. I'll tell you something only my family knows as long as you give me some answers. I want to a be a friend, Knox. Just let me in. Even if it is just a little."

"I don't think I'm liking your tone," Knox retorted. "You want to be a friend? We only just met. I'm not going to spill all my secrets to you," she said coldly and turned away from him. If she had pockets on this dang skirt, Knox would have shoved her hands into them, just for something to do. Now she just stood there and glared at the openness before her, letting her hands ball up into fists because she had no way to vent her anger. She knew her eyes were red again but she didn't care. Sethera couldn't see anyway, not with her back to him like that.

"I'll tell you something only my family knows. I'm not afraid of getting hurt. Explain to me why you would get pulled out, Knox." The words from Seth ran around her head and Knox, being stubborn, let her upper lip quiver as she said nothing.

"Fine. I will more than likely get pulled out by my father because that bat you saw," she said and whirled around, "is one of his familiars. Dad will not like it that you're asking so many questions. I'll probably have to ask Beau to go and kill the thing now," she said and rubbed her face with the palm of her hand. "There. I answered something."

Familiars?

Alright. That's another question. But the yellow-eyed male didn't want to push her when she only started to reveal some things about herself. He was content with what he heard though. Cocking his head slightly, he slowly approached her as he sorted out his own reply.

"Now time to tell you that thing I mentioned earlier, I guess," he said, flipping a white lock out of his yellow eyes. "I'm an empath. I can sense all the emotions writhing about in your head even if they aren't for show on your face."

Knox was taken aback when Sethera confessed about being an empath. Not so much the fact that he could sense others' emotions but that he wasn't totally human either. Numerous supernatural beings can spring offspring that have such talents as Seth though there were far too many to name. Still Knox wondered what type of blood was running through Sethera's veins.

Knox swallowed a load of saliva that had trickled into her mouth as she grasped Ajax's reins tighter. Nibbling at her lip, she looked down at the ground. "I'm sorry I can't trust you. It's too dangerous for you to be asking questions when we're being watched by the familiars but you won't have to worry about that after today. Ready to head back?" Knox said and led Ajax over to one of the benches. She stepped on the wood and threw one leg over Ajax's side, then righted herself on his back and looked at Seth.

He watched as he felt surprisement shoot through her mind. She honestly didn't expect that, it seemed. But inside, Sethera bit his lip as doubt filled him. Was that the correct thing to do? She wouldn't tell anybody would she? Zakeru would flip if he found out that anybody outside the family knew.

His older cousin was protective that way. But it wasn't smothering. It was more like how he protected his young twin siblings. If anybody bullied the twins because of the colour of their eyes and made them cry... Oh, there would be bloodshed. From both Zakeru and Erishi, his eldest cousin who was off who-knows-where.

Blinking cat-yellow eyes, he glanced up at Knox who was already atop Ajax. The boy shook his head slightly before getting up behind the girl on the horse.

The ride back was quiet. Ajax's hooves pulled up grass as they galloped on their way back. Knox held on tightly to the reins, her lips a hard line as she thought. She was positive her parents would pull her out, as soon as dad woke up and got a look through the familiar's eyes. Beau was nowhere to be seen of course, and she couldn't beg him to go take care of the dang bat. A hollow sort of feeling had filled Knox's heart. All of this had been for nothing; a wasted failure and one that her parents had warned her about in the first place.

I can't keep pretending I'm human, which means I have to choose soon. She swallowed. All her life, Knox had been told what side of her she'd let through, let take over. It happened with all hybrids that had such dominant heritage. It was either awaken one side or eventually die while the body waged war on itself. But Knox didn't want to be either simply because she could choose her mother's side and die almost immediately or her father and have to live away from people once and for all. And even if she didn't fit in, being without people would drive her insane.

Knox licked at her chapped lips as she got off of Ajax. After Sethera would get off, Knox took Ajax over to the showers and hosed the sweat off of him. When she brushed away the extra water and set him back in his stall, a school bell rang. She checked the time on the clock above the entrance to the barn. "School's over," she said. "Thanks for showing me around today Seth." She hesitated. "And I won't tell anyone about you okay? Seeya," she said and turned to go.

[[ Is Knox's mother some kind of Fae-creature? o3o ]]

The ride back to the stables was rather uneventful since they were both pretty quiet and withdrawn into their own thoughts. He let his arms rest lightly around Knox's waist. The movement of the stallion no longer freaking him out as before. Blinking yellow eyes when he felt Ajax slow and Knox dismount, Sethera followed suit.

Once his feet were on the ground again, he watched as she hosed off the sweat from the stallion's coat before brushing off all the extra water. As Knox replaced Ajax back into his stall, the school bell rang, signalling the end of the school day. Sethera cocked his head to one side. He'd have to get what he missed from his teachers now.

"Let me walk you to the front door, at least," Sethera said as he followed after her when she started moving off.

Knox had accepted Sethera's offer with a sigh and a nod. She was quiet as he took her to the school gates, where other students were already flooding out. If Sethera were to even attempt to start a conversation with her, Knox would merely shrug him off or reply with as little words as possible. It wasn't that she wanted to be rude. Seth had showed her nothing but kindness all day--save for when he wanted answers--and as another thing, Knox was drained. Physically and emotionally, she wanted rest.

Before she got on her bus though, she did turn and give Sethera a small smile. It was genuine, and one that hopefully showed her thanks. The bus ride seemed shorter and almost surreal. By the time she was dropped off at her front gates, the sun had just begun to set on the horizon. Knox swallowed painfully and started the trek up to her house.

By the time she got to the front door, it was dark. Her father would be up. And just as she stepped one foot into the house, she spotted her father in the hallway, stroking the bat from earlier. She winced as she closed the door behind her. Her father's eyes stayed right on the bat as he continued to rub his fingers against its chest.

"Dad, I--"

"Your room and don't come out until your mother gets back."

Dreogan was not entirely disappointed with his daughter, for once. The black cloak he wore fluttered down his back and waved in the wind that moved around him. His blonde hair, much resembling his daughter's, was spiked from the gusts and a shadow of stubble covered his jaw. His red eyes gleamed in the semi-dark and he caught a few stares from some young ladies crossing a road. He didn't look a day over twenty-five.

It hadn't been hard to find out where the human boy lived. Another of his familiars had tailed the empath home. He stopped in front of a house and spotted Knox's shapeshifting companion. He furrowed his brows and shooed the stag back into the woods. After its brown furry rump disappeared, Dreogan walked up to the door.

He knocked once, twice, and waited.

Knox had been quiet when he lead her back to the front of the school. He stopped and hung back as she turned and gave him a smile. It felt genuine. He felt his own lips twist into a smile as he watched her board her bus to go home. Sethera stayed there for a few minutes as he watched the buses pull away. Shortly after, Zakeru came rumbling up on his motorcycle. The engine reduced to a gentle purr.

"So, Seth. You just gonna keep standing there like a bump on a log or am I allowed to drive his Imperial Empath-ness back home to get a jump start on all the classes you missed because you were hanging out with the new girl?" Zakeru asked, leaning on his handle bars. His orange eyes shone with amusement as he watched his younger cousin jump.

"I so totally forgot about that! I gotta go ask m- What?" Sethera asked as he saw his cousin smirk.

"I already did, Cat-eyes. Hope on so we can go home."

Sethera complied and soon the two where heading back home.

~xXx~

Knock. Knock.

Sethera glanced up from his chemistry homework and frowned faintly when he heard the knock on the front door. Looking at the clock, he cocked his head as he saw the time. It was late. With a sigh, he pushed himself away from the table and to his feet before walking over to the front door. But, he tossed his pencil on the table before doing so.

Pausing slightly with his hand on the doorknob, Sethera furrowed his brows as he sensed the emotions of the person on the other side of the door. With a faint shrug, he opened it and blinked yellow eyes when he saw a male with a black cloak around his shoulders.

"Uh... Can I help you?" he asked.

"Uh...Can I help you?"

Dreogan scratched at the stubble on his jaw. It was different to see the boy from this perspective instead of from his familiars'. "It involves my daughter, Knox." Surely this would make the human at least curious. Perhaps he would need some persuading, seeing as Dreogan looked impossibly young, even if he was centuries old. "I'm afraid I may have to pull her from school again unless you can do something for me." He dropped his gaze and muttered, "I may have to do worse."

"But you, you can help her. Would you mind closing the door? I'd rather your cousin not overhear."

Knox? Sethera was suddenly interested in whatever this man had to say about his... daughter. He looked like he shouldn't have a kid at his age, but then, the yellow-eyed boy got the sense that this male was ancient in thought. He glanced over his shoulder. Zakeru was busy keeping his younger half-brothers busy. But still, he hesitantly stepped out of the house and closed the door behind him.

"What do you need me to do?" he asked.

"Good. You listen." Dreogan nodded approvingly and stepped back to give the human boy some more room on the stoop. The man turned and looked upward into the sky a moment, a hazy glaze milking his eyes before the cloud receded. He tilted his head and cast a sidelong glance back at Knox's friend, weighing the pros and cons, trying to see if this boy will care enough to endeavor when Dreogan shared his thoughts.

"As you've probably noticed, my daughter is and will never be one of your kind." Might as well get right to the point, right? He faced Sethera full on and with an audible click, a pair of gleaming white fangs dimpled the man's lower lip. "She is, in fact, a rare hybrid among supernaturals. You're an empath, you shouldn't be too surprised with this. Most supernatural crossings give advantages, even human and vampire offspring are better equipped to survive than either of their parents. Sadly, this is not Knox's case."

He paused. "You see, the two supernaturals she is crossed with are too powerful to embody one being. So she has to pick a side and the side she must choose is mine, if she wants to live of course. There lies the dilemma, my dear boy. Knox would rather die as two supernatural essences tear her apart from the inside or fall to death as a withered husk than become a creature of the night such as I."

"If she's going to live, you'll need to push her to drink from you."

Dreogan nodded and stepped down from the boy's front steps. "My work here is done now. Her life is in your hands." With that, he brought his hood back up over his face and disappeared in a blur.

Sethera watched as he thought about what he was going to say. His head cocking to one side for a moment before this strange male started talking. Of course he figured out that Knox wasn't human. Not after she looked at him like she wanted to take a bit of him. Now, he finally figured out why when he spotted those two fangs poking against this man's lower lip.

Vampire.

He was suddenly extremely weary. This man went one to explain that she was a hybrid between to supernaturals as was he. Okay... He might be an empath, but he was pure human... As far as he knew. But this news that Knox was in danger of loosing her life caused his thoughts to change gears from the father he could barely remember to this girl who was starting to win his heart.

To get her to live... He needed to get her to drink from him.

So that she would be like her father.

Then this strange man was gone.

Sethera had so many questions now. His yellow eyes blinked once before he felt them burn slightly. Rubbing one of them with the heel of his palm, he re-entered the house with questions and thoughts. His chemistry homework was now abandoned for other things.

Knox threw a tennis ball against the wall. Beau batted at it with his silver tabby paws. He swiped the green orb out from the air and sent it flying in the opposite direction, which left Knox to sigh and drop her hand down on the bed. Her fingers curled and tugged the bed sheets with them, gray eyes closing. Warm cat breath that stank of fish made her toes curl and she turned her head to the side, using her elbow to whack Beau's side and get him to roll off of her.

However, her arm went through air as the shifter changed into a mouse and nipped at the skin on her collarbone. "Ouch, Beau. Stop it."

"Stop with your moping. Dreogan isn't going to do anything irrational. He's too practical for that."

"You don't know that for sure," she muttered.

"Actually, I do. He seemed only keen on talking to the boy last I saw them."

"You told me already. Just hush and leave me alone."

"Fine then," Beau said and flicked his mousy tail. "By the way, your father's home."

Knox sat bolt upright just in time for her father to, of course, step into the room. He looked at his daughter once, rubbed his temples, and shook his head. "I didn't harm your precious human. Go to sleep. You're going to school tomorrow," he said tiredly. And with that, he walked out.

Knox looked down at Beau. "Told you so," he said as he resumed his beloved catlike form and curled up to sleep.

Knox rested her head back on her pillow and allowed herself a smile before falling asleep.
