We sat in silence for a long while before my dad disappeared so he wouldn't disrupt it with his coughing. It was odd but I felt comfort when he was around, even when he was sick. It was better than him being completely gone; leaving me to be the man of the family and to find food and shelter when there was none to be found.
I wasn't looking forward to that day but that day could be soon. It could be now. I blinked, my thoughts interrupted by a sound farther away. At first, Harmony and my mother lifted themselves up in fear, about to make a run for it. But then all was silent. "Sssh. It's alright. Probably some hunters roaming about." Hopefully.
They stilled, Harmony going back to her position in my lap and closing her eyes. Some farther and deeper inside the forest behind us probably heard the sound too and started to make a run for it before stopping because I could hear footsteps as the groups walked back to their original places. Then all was silent.
There used to be much more people here, stuck in poverty and living off the trash the villagers threw away but most of them had passed, mostly from disease or hunger. With the forest so big, us poorer folk could easily hide in this forest for years with out being seen, if we came out at the right times to find food.
I started to rock Harmony and as time went on, my eyes started to get droopy as well. I could hear my mothers tiny snores beside me even though, by the look of the sun, it was only evening. My father hadn't come back yet. I lay Harmony down on her back before laying beside her.
It wasn't long until I heard footsteps and thinking that it was my father, I leaned my head up while rubbing my eyes. Going to my feet, my eyes widened as the look of a woman coming this way came to my eyes instead. My hand found my knife behind my back, just to make sure it was still there if anything were to happen. Casually standing in front of the two sleeping girls, I waited for the girl to come closer before I made any conversation.
