"We're just going to have a talk about what you did today." Covalt replied.

They continued walking for miles and miles, hours probably, until they were clearly far from the territory. Then they stopped. "You made a big mistake, Avadare." Covalt said.

"I'm sorry-" Avadare began, but before she could even apologize, one of the wolves Covalt had brought dug his claws into her right shoulder. As if on cue, the other two wolves and the alpha were attacking her, tearing at her face and legs and back, ripping off peices of her ears, leaving gashes in her sides. She was yelping and howling in pain, but they were clearly too far away from the camp for anybody to hear. She managed to get away from them for a second, barely able to walk, there were so many bites to her paws, so Covalt caught her quickly, and scratched her through her left eye. She yelped, and fell to the ground, her eyesight immediately gone from the left side. This was like a nightmare, she couldn't move, when she lifted her head she realized that her attackers had left. The pain was so intense that she thought she'd black out. She laid on the ground, her blood pouring out around her. This was like a nightmare.

Kiyiya's ears pricked up as he heard a commotion going on, like sounds of fighting.  He ran over and found Avadere scarred, bloody, and battered, on the forest floor like a dead rabbit carcass.  He didn't say anything and nosed his head underneath her and on the other side, heaving her up on his back.  She was rather heavy, but he didn't mind.  Kiy steadily began going back to the pack's camp.  Halfway there, he finally spoke up.

"What happened?"

Kiy sighed.  Covalt was messed up.  How dare he punish a wolf for sticking up for another packmate who was fighting injustice?  It was stupid and cruel.  He had beat up Avadare, who was a great member of the pack, so he was basically just killing off his own wolves.  Kiyiya didn't find any sense in anything.  All he did know was that Alpha Covalt was not aligned on the side of light.  However, what Avadare said shocked him.  She wanted to.. stay out here... and die?  "What kind of wish is that, to have me leave you out in the woods?" Kiy asked softly.  "Clara can fix you up to nearly perfect health.  If you go back to camp you won't die.  So I'm not going to leave you here."

(FAIL.)

Clara had a strong stomach and she inspected Avadare's eye, went back to the herb storage, and came back with a lot of juicy leaves.  She rubbed the leaves' juice onto her eye and said, "That's all I can do to ease the pain and bleeding and perhaps restore some of your vision, otherwise, it seems that you'll be blind.  I'm terribly sorry," she said sadly, then continued to treat the other wounds.  "But at least it's only in one eye.  It could've been worse."

(When I read that, the song "Beautiful Monster" started playing in my head.)

Clara wondered if Avadare was dreaming or not and if she was, what could the dream be?  All the while she did her work, making poultices and mixing herbs, almost autonomously while she let her mind roam.  Kiy's voice sliced her concentration.

"How bad is it?" Kiyiya asked in his quiet voice.  Clara shook her head and mixed a few juices of different plants as she answered him.

"Well, that one eye will probably be completely blind or close to completely blind and will never repair itself.  And then she has all these deep scratches and bites, and one bite even dragged itself.  A few of the scratches might heal up, though she'll probably be scarred all over her body.  It's so sad... I wonder what happened.  I'll ask her when she comes to a bit more.  She was so pretty, too.  It's a shame.  A real shame."

Kiyiya laid down and rested his head on his paws, exhaling a deep sigh while Clara administered juices to the dragged bite mark and continued her work, tending to her patient.

Avadare felt like a monster, too. She hated how she looked at this point. She wasn't beautiful anymore, and she never would be again. For a long time, she'd dreamed of finding a mate who loved her. But that was going to be an impossible task now. As much as she hated her life right now, she wanted to wake up. But as if reading her mind, the prettier Avadare spoke up again. "Hang on, beautiful," She said with a smirk, and a sickening amount of sarcasm in her voice, "The nightmare's just begun."

"I was brave." The ugly Ava snarled. "I saved a life!"

"Was it worth it? You may have saved a life, but you've thrown your own away in the process."

"What was I supposed to do, stand there and watch him get killed?"

"Wasn't that what everyone else was smart enough to do?"

Scarred Avadare said nothing.

"You could do it, you know. Run off, live on your own. Or just give everything up, don't open your eyes. Stay sleeping. Don't wake up."

" I won't."

(So basically she's in a coma from the blood loss.)

Kiyiya turned around to notice that the night's crickets were subsiding and the chirps of birds were slowly beginning to creep into the early morning.  The sun still had yet to show up, though he was sure it would in due time.  He couldn't believe that he was awake so long.  Then Clara nudged Ava and he got a bit annoyed.  "Why don't you let her rest?" he asked, ear twitching.

"Because she has to give me feedback on how she's feeling.  I've tended to all of her injuries and the bleeding is greatly finished, though a few trickles remain.  Though she did lose a lot of blood in the process of it all.  Now, come on, Avadare.  Sweetie, you've got to wake up," Clara answered and then tried to wake Ava once more.  With no luck, she pressed her ear to the wolf's chest and listened.  The heartbeat and the breathing was still there.  "Ava, this isn't funny.  Wake up."

Kiy stood and prodded Avadare with no response.  Clara looked to him with worry in her eyes.  Kiy laid down again and buried his face in his paws.  "She's not going to wake up, is she?"

"No.  She's in a coma.  Probably from all the blood loss I mentioned previously or just the sheer trauma of it all.  Are you alright, Kiyiya?" the small, creamy-colored she-wolf spoke.

"Yeah, I'm totally fine.  It's just sad that this would happen to a pack member."

"Indeed."

Even though it was the middle of the night, Aketa had woken up for whatever reason. He stretched out and yawned, deciding to just get up for the day. He wasn't aware of what was going on. He got up and walked out of his den, stopping in his tracks at the smell of blood. Without a second thought he ran toward it, since he didn't hear fighting. The smell of blood took him to the healer's den, and he didn't recognize the disaster of a wolf that laid on the floor of the den, right in front of his paws. It was a small, light-colored wolf, covered in bites and scratches and blood and herbs.

It was a small, light-colored wolf.

It took him a few seconds before the reality of the situation actually hit him.

It was his sister.

"AVA...?!" His voice faded away because of the fear before he could even finish his sister's name. He stared down at her with wide, horrified eyes and turned to Clara. "What the hell happened?!"

Kiyiya, glad to be unnoticed, slowly began to crawl backwards and out of the medicine den silently.  He then made a mad dash for his own den once the coast was clear.  Aketa would kill him if he had stayed there, perhaps even thinking Kiy was the one who mauled his sister.  Better to avoid him, then.  Clara, meanwhile, didn't even flinch.  This reaction seemed to have been expected by her.

"I don't know what happened. I was going to ask her when she woke up, but she won't.  Either she won't, ever, or for a long time.  You see, your sister seems to have been attacked viciously and will have scars in many places.  One of her eyes will be either blind or completely blind forever.  I have treated everything to the greatest extent.  However, she is in a coma that is either induced by trauma or blood loss.  And there was a lot of blood.." Clara answered Aketa.

"And that is what the hell happened," she finished, sitting down right in front of Aketa calmly with no true ex
pression on her face.

Don't cry.

He tried to look at the bright side, but there wasn't much of a bright side to look to. If she lived, she'd live in Covalt's pack, which wasn't a good thing. If she died, she died, which obviously wasn't a good thing either.

Forced to take something seriously for once, Aketa padded over to Avadare and sat down beside her. Don't cry. He knew there wasn't anything Clara could do to wake her up. He didn't know if she'd be able to hear him, if he talked, either. He knew what it was like to black out, but this was different. She was going to be like this for a long time, if not forever. He wanted to wake her up, even though he knew it wouldn't work. But it was worth a try.

He opened his mouth to speak, but he couldn't find the words. He didn't know what to say. He shook his head and laid down beside his sister.

Clara sighed sadly and laid down.  She didn't have anything else to do but wait.  The sun had begun to raise, its rays starting to stretch over the horizon.  "I'm sorry, Aketa.  I hope things will get better for you and her," she said softly.
