Kitty sighed heavily. "I didn;t do it, Miss, I swear!"

"Kathleen, I ain't takin your word! I know how you and your fool of a brother better than you know yourselves. If anyone's a troublemaker, it's you! Now git down here, an' fill in those holes!" Miss Hecklespout bellowed.

kitty sighed again. Stupid holes in the wall. Stupid Hecklespout. Stupid life.

Henry hurried back to his room. No way was he going to get caught again. He liked Kitty and he knew it too. Sometimes he wondered if she liked him back. It was hard to tell, and Henry knew he needed to get to bed. After all, he would be having nothing but broccoli and unseasoned chicken for the next week. Slowly, he fell asleep.

Johnathan crawled on hands and knees through the damp sewer. Even though it was one of the closed off ones, it still stank and had mold growing along the walls. He shivered, pulling his heavy cloak around him tighter. Trust his firends to think of a place like this to hold one of their meetings. As he wrinkled his long nose in disgust, once again, Kitty sprang into his mind. If she were here with him, she'd be yapping about how he was so idiotic to come. And she'd be right, like always. The fact that he had left her on her own gnawed at his every thought, his guilt prickling him in every step. Someday, he would go back for her. Someday, when he had a place to call home, he would go back to Miss Hecklespout's Orphanage and claim her as his own. Of course, Miss Hecklespout would be suspicious, but then again, he wasn;t the average teen.

Tall and crow-like, Johnathan was the very image of his father. He had greasy shoulder-length hair, a square jaw and cold black eyes. Being on the run, he only had one set of clothes: a tight black top, black trousers and his heavy cloak. His preference for wearing black dubbed him as the Thief Lord among his friends. Of course, he wasn't really a thief...

Henry awoke to the sound of voices." His parents are here!" one complained. " Ssh,"Another said. " He could be awake. We don't want him to know that..." " Are you crazy?" the other said."He's probably awake,". Henry quickly closed his eyes and sat there, waiting to be discovered.

Kitty sprang out of bed, shooting a glance at her alarm clock. 2 am. She strode to the wall and banged on it, screaming "Shut up! Can't anyone get some sleep around here?!" The voices fell silent immediately.

"Kiiitttyy!" Miss Hecklespout's voice dripped with contemptment at discovering Kitty out of her bed. "I told you to use indoor voices, haven't I? Since you're awake, you can come down here and greet our guests!"

Kitty swung a fist at the door. "Damn you! I'm NOT GOING DOWN, AND YOU CAN'T MAKE ME!"

"Oh, I can't, can I? We shall see about that."

Rapid footsteps pounded up the stairs, the sound of Hecklespout's loud breathing filled the otherwise quiet hallway.

Kitty gulped. Now she'd done it. Hecklespout'll probably throw her out into the streets. God, whatever had made her say those things?

Mrs.Hecklespout had just ruined Henry's day. Today he had promised himself he would tell Kitty that he liked her. Instead, she was getting thrown onto the street.

Kitty backed against the wall. There was no place to go. The door flew open and a red faced Miss Hecklespout burst in, gasping with each breath.

"Kitty...you're in...big trouble...now missy!"

Hecklespout snatched Kitty by the ear, dragging her downstairs, past a frightened looking couple looking to adopt and onto the porch.

"Outta my orphanage, you little troublemaker! Just like your brother, I always said. Take the right path, girl, and keep going right. You'll find a fish market along the way, and they're sure to have a job for you there!" Hecklespout cackled, slamming the door close in Kitty's face. Kitty turned towards the path. She'd been waiting for an excuse to go looking for her brother. Now was the time.

" As, for you, Henry, come here.I have a deal to make,"Mrs.Hecklespout said.  "What?" Henry said. "You aren't an orphan. One of these couples are your parents.The others are looking to adopt. They are both under strict contracts not to tell you if they're your parents until you're eighteen. If they do, your life will become very, very, uncomfortable."Henry swallowed at the word uncomfortable. " So, who do you choose?"She said. " I, um, uh, ......" Henry said.
" Come on, Henry, it's only your entire future on the line." " I pick....." Henry said.
