((Do you think it's necessary for us to both roleplay the non-romance clan characters?  Since they're not interacting with one another until maybe later, it's a bit pointless to roleplay them that much except to provide character insight. x3))

Heavyfoot immediately scrambled into a defensive position at hearing an undeniably RiverClan voice.   His fur bristled, and the hint of amusement in the she-cat across the river's voice gave him the feeling that she didn't even know who he was.  For a moment, he stared blankly, trying to place a name to her face, but only came up with Rain.  Rainsomething.  His memory never was the best.

Feeling humiliated, he tried to make up for his clumsy fall by taking a somewhat more offensive stance.  His whiskers twitched, and he straightened, trying to maintain the authoritive stance he always held in front of his clanmates...not that it would matter much now.  This she-cat probably wouldn't view him with the same respect as with her own deputy.

"An apprentice went missing.  I decided to check the riverside," Heavyfoot replied stiffly, pretending to resume his check around the bank...not that there was much to look at once he was down the cliffside.

---

"Brookpaw, have you seen Frostpaw?" Oakstar poked her head into the medicine cat den, and noticed the other patients. "Oh, Doveheart.  They're always out of the nursery, aren't they?"

While the kits couldn't really walk on their own, the queen made sure they got their dose of fresh air. "Yes, they are.  Wasn't Frostpaw supposed to be training with Lionfoot?"

"Lionfoot can't find him, and none of the apprentices have seen him.  If they have, they're not saying anything...he must have snuck out." As the leader said this, Ravenwing immediately turned to Brookpaw with an ex
pression easily read as 'like you did'.

Flustered, Brookpaw turned away and pretended once again to be immersed in herb memorization.  The mark on her face was a permanent reminder of her mischief.  It'd be funny if Frostpaw was found at the end of the day with a similar mark.  Or not, because then they'd be compared even more.  No matter how kind a cat was, they would always make mental comparisons between the cats in a litter.
Blackthroat noticed this, and chuckled at Brookpaw's withdrawal from the conversation. "You might want to send out a patrol to search for him."

"Heavyfoot's checking by the river, Mothflight told me." The leader frowned, and began to knead the ground somewhat nervously with her paws.  It annoyed her how she was easy to read, but some things were involuntary. "Lionfoot left before the orders were even given.  He's worried."

Ravenwing spoke up. "I'm sure he's fine.  Apprentices always are getting out and they usually come back fine, if not with a scratch or two." Another direct reference to her, if much vaguer.  Brookpaw inched farther away.  Did her father always have to bring out her mistakes?  It wasn't her fault she wanted to be a medicine cat.

"Yes, but there was fresh badger scent.  We don't want him ending up like Sparrowpaw." There was silence in the den as each cat temporarily relived the havoc caused by the mangled body brought in by the patrol that day.  Snowwhisker had been devastated to see her only daughter's body, torn up and ripped like a toy in the jaws of a badger.  The mental images sent a shiver through Doveheart, and she looked up at Oakstar.

"Please tell me as soon as they find him," She whispered.

Her leader nodded, and quietly exited with a small nod.

---

Mothflight nosed around after reporting back to Oakstar.  When she was an apprentice, she made sure to come back after sneaking out before sunhigh!  The she-cat shook her head before continuing her investigation of the area.  Redclaw was beside her, both of them being extra wary.  The badger scent had been found here, but luckily Frostpaw's scent wasn't caught.

"Well, I guess that means it's unlikely he got caught by one," Redclaw mused.

Mothflight shook her head. "We don't know where the freshest badger scent is.  If we keep following it, we might run into it, with or without Frostpaw."

((Fail again. ._. Blah~))

Ooc// Just roleplaying Rainstep and Heavyfoot would be great.  ^^
Bic//
Rainstep paused a moment, looking after the tom.  A missing apprentice wasn't such a strange occurance in a camp.  In fact, she was reasonably certain that her own camp would be in more of an upheaval looking for her than any apprentice making mischief.  She couldn't help but doubt the tom's claim--especially when he was so close to RiverClan territory.
Rainstep darted after him, paws splashing in the icy water as she hurried to reach his location a bit farther down the river bank.  She paused when he was directly across from her, studying him.  The tom wasn't bad looking, she had to admit, and he held himself in a way that suggested importance.  A sudden flash of intuition made her wonder if she had managed to offend the WindClan leader--but a picture of Owlstar came to mind, and this was certainly a male cat.  We're thinking things through today, aren't we Rainstep? she thought, embarassed by her slow memory.
But maybe this tom was the deputy.
Finally, after what must have been a lengthy pause, she ventured, "How long has the apprentice been missing?"  She didn't want to outright deny his claim, so perhaps information-gathering was the way to begin.

Heavyfoot felt awkwardness descend upon his shoulders like a bunch of clingy kits, and he cringed as she analyzed him.  For a moment, he rethought the situation, wondering if he should bother to even justify himself in front of a RiverClan cat, and then shrugged.  This Rainsomething cat might end up being the leader's daughter or having some overly ambitious family that would try to kill him regardless of status and the Code.

"Since before sunhigh," He replied, keeping his voice steady and attempting to have it retain its authorative touch, but failing.  "If you haven't seen him, I'll be on my way."

She was a little distracting, in a sense.  He had to leave before Mothflight came back to him or something...they would all think the wrong things.   Glancing across the river that she so easily crossed, he suddenly felt threatened.  The river was really the only major natural barrier against them, and while it was a well known fact RiverClan cats could swim...he rarely saw them display their talents.  In battles, he always preferred to fight AWAY from the water, defending the camp from those who made it past the front lines.

He watched the water dripping off her pelt.  The aspect of jumping in there seemed ridiculous...and as delicate as he thought the she-cat looked from across the river, she proved so otherwise.  And despite the fact she was wet, she still looked quite pretty...for a RiverClan cat.  Heavyfoot coughed and backed away slightly, not wanting to get even slightly wet.  Knowing the WindClan apprentices, even a few wet paws would make them think you tumbled into the river.

Rainstep mreowed with amusement at the tom's obvious attempt to get away from her dripping pelt.  Despite the action being so purely WindClan, she felt a slight flash of self-consciousness.  Her fur was clinging to her small frame, and she felt suddenly tiny in the presence of him.  Perhaps he was thinking of how easy it would be to overpower her as his gaze flicked across her body.
To ward off her fearful thoughts--she refused to look weak in front of a WindClan cat--she continued with her earlier line of conversation.  "So he hasn't even been gone a day?" she asked, purely skeptical now.
A missing apprentice seemed a very weak excuse for being so close to RiverClan territory, especially if he hadn't been gone for very long.  And yet, she found herself not wanting to doubt this tom.  The way he carried himself made her think that he was an important cat--even if she couldn't remember who exactly he was--and there was something in his eyes that made her want to be assured by him.  To believe his claim.
Rainstep unconsciously shook her head to rid herself of the thoughts.  She was still standing in the water of the riverbank, not yet on WindClan land, but she still didn't want him to get the wrong idea.
Finally, she added, "I suppose there must be an urgent reason to his disappearance, then?  I doubt a mischievous apprentice would cause such an uproar otherwise.  Unless you're his mentor," she added.
As she waited for his reply, Rainstep took another look at him, trying to discern what his intentions were.  She inexplicably wanted so badly to believe him, but what did she know?
He was WindClan, she was RiverClan....had she lost her mind?

Heavyfoot was getting frustrated- why didn't she believe him?  Sure, he was from another Clan, but there wasn't much damage he could do to RiverClan standing on HIS side of the river ALONE.  It wasn't like he was in an offensive position either!  The deputy dropped whatever possible defensiveness and simply sat down, like any relaxed cat would.  RiverClan cats- always being paranoid!

"I don't know how long he's been gone!   When his mentor woke up near sunhigh, she realized he was missing and no one else could find him.  His mentor found me up there-" The tom jerked his head towards the top of the cliffs where had had previously sat upon to stare at the river. "And told me.  She went off to search and I figured I might as well investigate this area since it wouldn't be a first time an apprentice has fallen." Getting overly defensive, Heavyfoot realized his fur was beginning to puff up like some startled kittypet.  He took a deep breathe and tried to calm himself down.  If he ended up alarming her, she'd run off and get some patrol to chase him down.  He didn't want to scare her at all.

Rainstep frowned at the tom, her own hackles rising despite seeing the sense in his words.  He was obviously distressed.  "There's no need to get upset!" she hissed, more in annoyance than in actual anger.  "I'm simply asking you for an explanation, since you're awfully close to the border, with the excuse of some missing apprentice as your only explanation.  In RiverClan, we don't classify that as a need for a search-and-rescue party, so excuse me for investigating what I thought was a suspicious situation!"
Furious, she began to stalk back into the river.
She didn't know what had made her suddenly so upset.  Maybe it was the stress from her parent's argument fueling her anger, or maybe it was true irritation at the tom's blindness to common sense.  Whatever the reason, it stopped her about a fox-length into the water, quivering with an onslaught of emotions.  She didn't want to tom to see her like this, but she couldn't seem to get herself to move.  She simply stood there, gaze caught in the swirling eddies and waves of the river she had just crossed.
It had been a bad idea to come over here at all.

He went into a mode of panic when she began to leave, but felt immediate relief when she stopped.  However, that nervous feeling returned when that's all she did.  She stopped, nothing more, as if unsure of what to do.  Well, what was stopping her?  If he were her, he would have run away crying out for the nearest patrol that a WindClan was prancing about near the border with some lame excuse.  Only issue was, it wasn't really excuse.  Frostpaw WAS missing.
Then Heavyfoot began to wonder if she was contemplating leaving.  If she did, he wouldn't have another chance to justify himself unless he ran into into RiverClan camp or hung around the border like some rogue.  Though, it really shouldn't matter if she left, there weren't many grounds to base things on to launch a raid especially since he didn't even cross the border...but why was he so bothered by her leaving?
Without even thinking things over, Heavyfoot took a sharp intake of breath and ran after her, floundering into the water.  He could feel the pebbles brushing against his paw pads and already saw Rainstep standing, so it couldn't be THAT deep.  However, the current, despite its lack of strength, was frightening him.  His paws desperately splashed around and he tried to keep his head higher above the water than necessary.  Frustration churned his stomach and he coughed up some water.

Ooc// Ohmai. D:  I didn't see you had posted!
Sorry this post is so terrible.  >->

Rainstep felt her feet move out from under her in a surge of instinct as the tom floundered.  Part of her screamed to not help him--he was WindClan, after all--but the majority of her brain scolded that he was a fellow feline.  She couldn't just let him drown.
With a hiss, she slid through the water with a skill so characteristic of her Clan, and latched her teeth into his thick black scruff.  She grunted as she tried to balance out his weight, dragging him into shallower waters.
With a sniff, she released him and retreated a few steps back into the water, in case he was angry.  She studied him with a flick of her tail, wondering what had come over him.  It was a mouse-brained move, especially for a cat who couldn't swim, but she was curious as to what had motivated him.
"What were you thinking?" she asked, then cringed at her harsh tone.  She hadn't meant to sound like a scolding queen.  She tried to soften the sharpness in her tone as she said softly, "You could have drowned."
Rainstep felt an onslaught of emotions as she said this.  Anger, fear, embarassment, and a strange sort of affection--almost like what one would feel about an adorable little kit, but it was somehow fundamentally different.  She shut her eyes tightly, trying to sort them out, and then opened them again and waited for his reply.

[[It's no problem.]]
Heavyfoot, despite the fact he could stand in shallow water, clumsily threw himself out of the water and onto the land, scrabbling up onto the river bank and clawing out pieces of earth in the process.  When he finally lugged himself out of the water and lay on his side, head to the ground, in a rather pathetic pose, he finally processed the humiliation.  The adrenaline began to eb away, but panic was overtaking him.  His mentor had always told him to keep the respect of those around you and be mindful of your actions.  He had failed.  He had senselessly tossed himself into the water after a RiverClan cat and nearly drowned because of it.  Now he was in a DEBT.  His personal moral code called for it.

Slowly, the tom turned to the she-cat.  He saw her dripping pelt again and flinched, hating the foreign feeling of the water weighing down his own.   As she briefly yelled at him, he winced and involuntarily gained the ex
pression of a kit being scolded by its mother.  Within a few moments, he realized this and heaved a sigh, knowing trying to correct himself with a likely-to-fail authorative stance would probably get him into more misfortune.

"Nothing," Heavyfoot mumbled, humiliation turning his face away to avoid her gaze.  He fell silent.

Rainstep moved towards the tom, and then paused at the river's edge.  She didn't want to step onto WindClan territory, but something about the humiliation almost radiating off of his pelt made her want to comfort him?
"Nothing?" she whispered softly, staring at him in a way that she was unable to stop.  A burning desire to tell this tom that she wasn't angry--just shocked--overwhelmed her.  "What's your name?"
Her paw hesitated for just a moment, hanging between forbidden land and safety, and then it settled on the damp pebble-strewn sand.  She took three more hesitant, unusre steps toward him, and then stopped.  It was mouse-brained to feel guilty for making him like this, but something about stripping away the tom's dignity made Rainstep feel...hollow.  She cast her eyes downward, hoping he couldn't read the cascade of emotions parading across her face, as she said her next words.
"I'm not angry.  Just...a little surprised, is all.  I didn't meen to yowl like that.  I'm certainly in no position to do so."
She kept her eyes concentrated fiercely on the riverbank.  WindClan's riverbank.  Where she now stood.  What had she done?

"Heavyfoot," The tom replied, saying his words with caution.  As she passed through the border, a mix of fear and...respect ruffled his pelt.
She had little idea of who he was, that he knew.  Despite that, she had risked being seen by border patrols when she saved him from a peril that she approached with such familiarity it caused another rush of shame.  He could never carry the same dignity in front of someone who saw him fail that much.  Heavyfoot inhaled deeply, having forgotten to breathe for the moment.  This wasn't working well.
The sensible thing to do would be to chase her off, but he knew he couldn't.  She didn't deserve that.  He didn't even know what was going on anymore.  Her last sentence replayed in his head, and he caught the 'in no position to do so'.  Eyes flashing, he immediately looked up.
"Do you mean the fact that you're on WindClan territory now or did you realize who I am?" Some small amoutn of humor made its way into his tone before he realized it, and his whiskers quivered.  Ha.  Deputy.  It wasn't like many cats approved of Oakstar's decision anyway.

"Both." Rainstep's whiskers twitched slightly as realization came over her.

It was just her luck to accuse, humiliate, and interrogate WindClan's deputy.  Now that he had told her his name, she remembered why he had seen familiar.  He, of course, had been sitting at the base of FourTrees for moons now, keeping the peace and protecting his leader.  And she had had the impertinence to be so rude to him!  The thought sent a rush of shame through her.

At least she hadn't let him drown.

Sighing, she turned back towards the river, her paws burning as if she had touched land more forbidden than another Clan's territory.  She wanted to turn around and apologize, but she couldn't make herself do it.  She might as well leave now, with a shred of her dignity intact.
Rainstep waded into the river.  As her belly fur brushed the cold water, she took a deep breath and turned around.  Perhaps she should apologize.
"I'm...sorry for intruding.  I was out of place, Heavyfoot."  She swallowed, fighting the urge to ask him not to tell anyone about the chance encounter.  But that would ruin the point of her apology.

Then she plunged into the river.

[[Lol, it's a romance roleplay, of course. XD]]

"No, it was your right to question me being so close to the border.  I shouldn't have attempted to follow you to the river anyway," He replied softly, too hesitant to make eye contact.  His gaze focused on a somehow interestingly shaped rock on the ground.

When she hit the water, he wasn't even sure if she had heard him.  It didn't matter, anyway.  It was better than she felt the way she did...right?  He was deputy.  She should have treated him with more respect, though that really didn't equal up well to the fact he just lunged onto the border.  With a shudder, Heavyfoot began shaking himself, trying to fling the water droplets out of his pelt.  Mothflight would be back at any moment to check if he had found Frostpaw, or just to tell him the apprentice was retrieved.  It would be bad if she found him there with...Rainsomething.

Great StarClan, he didn't even figure out that cat's name.  Oh well.  He'd probably run into her at the gathering and it would become awkward, with his luck.  Heavyfoot paused and glanced towards the river, her departure weighing on his shoulders heavier than it should have.
