Rainstep struggled through the river's current for the first time she could remember in seasons. Her departure seemed to place a heavy weight in her chest that she couldn't name, and it was dragging her down in the thick current. The journey from one side to the other seemed to last a moon. When she finally set foot on the other riverbank, she stood there for a moment, feeling lost. Rainstep had to force herself to repeat old habits--shaking the water off, getting her whorled-around pelt back into some semblance of order, keeping herself in the sunlight so that she wouldn't freeze. Her mind seemed in a fog. She felt guilty and embarrassed for what had happened on the other side of the river, and yet she couldn't seem to push it out of her mind. She wouldn't be surprised if Heavyfoot told everyone what had happened and cast her into disgrace throughout the Clans. And she woudn't blame him. It had been a mouse-brained idea to accuse him like that. A missing apprentice was still missing, after all--and Heavyfoot had a duty to find him. She sighed, finding her gaze wandering across the river. Despite her fear of his ridicule, she insanely hoped to see him again. Ooc// Maybe a time skip is in order? To when, I have no idea...

((Fastforward to the next gathering after this, perhaps? And then they could each see if Rainstep's crossing of the border will be brought up by Oakstar. And sorry about the slow response, I didn't see you answer. :c)) Heavyfoot, as much as he wanted to look across the river, knew that he already spent too much time talking to her as it was. He sensed that she would be looking back towards him, and while it tore away to leave so suddenly, he knew better than to stay. With that sense of dignity that had somewhat returned, he ran towards the gentler slope of the cliffside. He ran between the cliffside and the numerous debris on the bank, knowing that it would make him less seen. That was good. No good would ever come of getting close to a RiverClan cat, he thought. As he was approaching the cliffside that he was going to climb, the dark form of Mothflight skidded into view. Her face was no longer tense but annoyed, and for a moment Heavyfoot wondered if she had seen him. Shame and fear welled up inside him. "I found Frostpaw," she spat, her whiskers quivering with anger. "Apparently Swanpaw dared him to see how long he could hide without being found, and if he was found before the day ended then that made him as good as crowfood." Relief settled on Heavyfoot, both regarding Frostpaw being found and the fact his conversation with Rainsomething had been unheard. "Where was he?" "Who really knows, all he was doing was running from hiding place to hiding place. He's rather fast and good at mingling his scent with older scents of his..." she shook her head. "I'm just glad he's safe. We can go back now." Mothflight turned, her tail still flicking in annoyance. Without much of an argument, Heavyfoot followed.

Ooc// Logging on for a bit. <3 Bic// Rainstep sidled her way past her Clanmates towards the front of the group. The start sihoettes of FourTrees stood out before them, quickly rising taller and taller as they raced closer. Scents of other cats wafted through--Rainstep detected scents of ShadowClan, but no sign of ThunderClan or WindClan yet. Part of her was relieved--she didn't need to chance an encounted with Heavyfoot yet--but another part of her was...disappointed. Puzzled, she shoved the emotion back, and focused on not making a bigger blunder than her run-in with the RiverClan deputy. An anxious hole had wormed its way into her belly. No one had questioned her when she had gotten back to camp. Larkstar had even excused her from duties--she had a feeling that the she-cat knew more about the tremulous situation of her parents than Rainstep had previously suspected. They had all just assumed she had been upset, and needed time alone...which was partially true. But she hadn't been able to summon up the courage to say what she had really been doing. And now the worry was coming back to haunt her. What if Owlstar--or worse, Heavyfoot himself--announced her disgrace to all of the Clans? She could never be able to live it down. She should have apologized more profusely, begged him to keep the encounter to themselves--besides, she had helped him from drowning, after all. But, if any cat could be so heartless, it was a WindClan cat. Rainstep shivered, sitting in a group of her Clanmates, away from the hustle and bustle of the gathering, trying to weather out the emotional storm.

Oakstar, followed by Heavyfoot, led the chosen members of her clan into Fourtrees. The WindClan cats dispersed into the rest of the crowd, going to talk with some other cats they might have been familiar with. The deputy watched as Brookpaw broke away from Blackthroat's side to talk with a ThunderClan and ShadowClan apprentice. Frostpaw was probably seething, knowing him, but he did deserve being excluded from the Gathering. Mischief was not to be rewarded. As his leader took her place on the Great Rock, Heavyfoot's eyes found Larkstar. Fear clenched his heart. Rainstep, as he remembered her name, could have easily told them. It would be humiliating for this to be announced during a gathering. He walked over to Lionfoot, who was conversing with a ShadowClan warrior and her apprentice on the less populated edges of Fourtrees. Nodding a greeting to his clanmate, he pretended to be involved in the conversation with the occasional gesture, knowing that if Larkstar said anything and he was about to be mauled, he would have a better chance at survival being near the entrance. The thought was frightening, but some part of him doubted that Rainstep would do that. After all, he hadn't told on her. He was the one who attempted to cross the border, and she actually did it...they were equal. Weren't they? Involuntarily, Heavyfoot found himself searching the crowd for the RiverClan she-cat.

Rainstep's paws eventually took over, and she stood up. The nervousness was making her far too energetic, and she needed to stretch her legs. Making up an excuse to look for a ThunderClan cat, she broke away from the group and slid through the crowd of cats. She tried not to stop too long anywhere, and eventually she was very nearly running through the crowd in an attempt to get away from it all. If Heavyfoot had told Owlstar--and Rainstep wouldn't blame him if he had--maybe it was best to be out of the thick of the crowd. She only slowed as she reached the outer edges of the clearing. A sigh of relief blew through her, and she felt a bit of the tension drain out of her singing nerves. Impatient for the meeting to start, and for her disgrace to be announced or to go unnoticed, she sat down to wait.

((We can skip ThunderClan and ShadowClan announcements, right? Jump right to Oakstar and Larkstar's. )) Heavyfoot found heras she was navigating her way to the outer edges, and he instinctively looked away and went to sit on the other side of Lionfoot. In that position, Lionfoot's bulky frame and the thick, low-lying tree branches behind him shielded him from Rainstep's gaze should she glance his way. It would be too awkward if she did. He wasn't suposed to feel uncomfortable in the presence of any warrior from another Clan- he was a deputy, for StarClan's sake! "Stop being so restless, Heavyfoot. You should be closer up to the front, ready in case Oakstar wants to talk to you after the gathering," Lionfoot remarked lightly, noting his friend's unease. The deputy scowled. "I'm sure Oakstar can see me just fine from the Great Rock," he said, even though he had been on there once before and knew that the shadows he sat in cloaked him well from that distance.

Ooc// Sure thing~ <3 Bic// Rainstep tensed as she saw a flash of black and white pelt, but her body relaxed as she realized that it was Larkstar making her way onto the Great Rock. The ShadowClan leader was retreating, his tawny face set in a sinister grimace that reminded Rainstep why RiverClan cats tended to keep to themselves. The other Clans were all so...unpleasant. Larkstar swept the Gathering with her even green gaze, waiting for the chatter of ShadowClan's announcements to die down. Then, she began. "Greetings, my friends. It has been a most wonderful moon for RiverClan. The prey is abundant, and our nurseries flourishing with kits." Rainstep frowned at her leader. They only had a few litters on the way, and only one born yet. Was the she-cat trying to look strong among the other Clans? She listened to exaggerated reports of "spectacular fishing" and "excellent apprentice mentors" that have made the Clan "ready for the seasons ahead." But what unsettled her most was Larkstar's assurance of "some of the safest and most secure borders in all the Clans." When the she-cat finally leapt down from her perch, she had a slightly smug air about her. Rainstep couldn't summon up the worry to wonder why her leader was acting in such a manner, but it didn't matter. The WindClan report was next.

Heavyfoot felt like a giant burden had been partially lifted off his shoulders. Larkstar had not been alerted of the fact he had tried to cross the river border. He was grateful for Rainstep, and glad that he hadn't told Oakstar. It would've been horrendous for him to have told his leader, ended up shaming Rainstep, and never again could look at her in the eyes since she didn't end up doing the same. The deputy shook his head to clear his thoughts. It shouldn't have mattered what she thought of him. He was only saving her hide because he saved her from drowning. It was stupid of him to have gotten himself into that debt anyway. He looked up to watch Oakstar give her report.
Oakstar cast a strange look towards Larkstar before continuing with her clan report. "Our clan's nursery is happily occupied with kits as well, and the rabbits have been especially abundant." Heavyfoot realized that she was trying to stretch the truth, but not to the point where it was impossible. She was trying to be better than Larkstar, without acting like her. "We have been lucky to have little twoleg interference this year, so far there has only been one sighting." She continued on with the average news, and finished, stiffly staring at Larkstar with a look of disdain she seemed to struggle to hide.
